Is TeX Y2K-compliant?
Erik Frambach
January 1999
Abstract
Will TeX and related programs continue to work properly after the year 2000? This article describes how TeX deals with dates and how this affects its behavior after the year 2000. Keywords: millennium, Y2K
What's the problem?
Many programs that have been running perfectly well for a long time could crash or otherwise cause problems at the turn of the century. The reason is that these programs internally represent years in only two digits. This means that, e.g., the year 1999 is represented as `99' and the year 2000 is represented as `00'. Any program that attempts to do arithmetics with these truncated values will fail. My age, e.g., could be determined by subtracting my year of birth from the current year. In 1999 that would be `99' minus `60' equals `39'. But in the year 2000 it would be `00' minus `60' equals `-60'. Depending on the kind of application that makes such errors, the consequences could be devastating. If a program behaves decently, using `large' numbers such as `1999' for internal representations, it is called Y2K-compliant (Y2K means `Year 2 Thousand'). Many companies are currently testing all their mission-critical software and hardware for Y2K-compliancy. Naturally TeX is also put to the test.

dvi pdf Usually, TeX is run as a batch program. But when run as a daemon, TeX can be part of an interactive program. Daemons often that run forever, or at least for a long time. Hence the title of this paper. Usually, parsing and transformation of the input data is done by TeX macros, with little outside help. Often, this results in input documents that only TeX can understand. Also, TeX macros can be hard to write. We demonstrate the replacement of TeX macros by an external program. This is done in real time. Usually, TeX's principal output is a dvi representation of typeset pages, for processing by a printer driver. However, TeX's log file or console can be used to allow TeX to output the boxes it holds internally. (Alternatively, an extension of TeX could write this data out in a binary form.) Shipping out boxes rather than dvi allows an external program to do the page makeup.

TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald E. Knuth of Stanford University. I first used TeX on June 1st, 1987 and have never looked back. It is a fully programmable macro language used to specify how a document should be typeset. TeX documents are portable and stable. Files dating to 1982 can be formatted and printed without modification-try that with Word Perfect.

TeX handles only the formatting part of the document preparation. Generating output from TeX is like compiling source code into object code, which still needs to be linked. You prepare an input file with a text editorwhat most people think of as ``word processing''- and format the input file document with TeX to produce a device-independent output file, called a .dvi file.

    A Documentation Guide
This page is an attempt at a guided tour around the huge amount of TeX and LaTeX documentation which comes as part of teT E X, the unix TeX and LaTeX system assembled by Thomas Esser. It is contributed by Keith Refson and all comments, suggestions and flames should be directed to him . Queries about installing and maintaining the teT E X installation itself should be directed to the teT E X mailing list : (See the teT E X Homepage for instructions) - but check the frequently-asked questions list first. Questions about using LaTeX, TeX etc are best posted to the usenet newsgroup comp.text.tex where they will receive attention from a worldwide readership. Much of the documentation is in the form of dvi and PostScript files which should display using xdvi or ghostscript front ends such as ghostview or gv from a properly configured web browser. Alternatively you may download and print them. The original LaTeX sources can be found in the documentation tree which is rooted at $TEXMFMAIN/doc . The command texdoc [package-name] will attempt to display documentation for that package from the shell command line.

Situation The health and livelihood of Americans depends on the availability of a safe drinking water supply. Residents in rural areas of Texas primarily rely upon private wells for their water needs. Private wells are a water source that is not regulated to the extent that public drinking water supplies are. Private well owners are responsible for the quality of their own drinking water. They need to be aware of potential contamination risks to their wells and how to protect against these risks. As a result, more private well owners are demanding well water testing and water quality information.

What the heck is Latex? This document attempts to explain what Latex is, in under five minutes.
Latex is a document preparation system
You use Latex to create documents for others to read. In that respect it is similar to Microsoft Word. But the similarities end there. Document preparation with Latex typically consists of using a text editor (such as Emacs, vi, or even Notepad) to edit a Latex source file , which has the extension .tex , and then running the latex program to convert the source file to a document interchange format such as Postscript or PDF. Once the document is in a document interchange format, it can be previewed on the screen, sent to others, printed, etc.
What is up with the name "Latex"?
The name is (in my opinion) the worst part. It is too easily confused with latex, a synthetic rubber-like substance, and it seems elitist to many people. But try to forgive the name; it was created by Computer Scientists like me, and we're terrible at naming things. Pronounciation : I usually pronounce it "LAY-tek", though some pronounce it "LAH-tek". In any case, the second syllable is not pronounced "teks".

LaTeX is a typesetting language that runs circles around standard word processing programs because ... it is a true language. This means you can define new commands and do rather complex things. It is not really any harder to use than standard word processing programs such as word Y or word IM perfect but it beats them hands down. Because it is a vastly superior, permanent document preparation method, I write all my scientific papers, in LaTeX and then convert them automatically to html with latex2html, and to postscript and (more recently) to pdf with ghostscript . An example is the Information Theory Primer

The Computer Paper In addition to sending output to printers, many of the text processing systems, such as troff (typesetting runoff), were designed to send output to a typesetting machine. Because of this typesetting bias, documentation produced with these systems is strikingly readable and often very beautiful, typographically. One of the most brilliant text processing systems was created by Donald E. Knuth, a world authority on programming algorithms. He called his system TeX, pronounced 'TEK' or 'TEKHHH' with a Scottish guttural at the end. (Don't practice pronouncing it this way in polite company.) The final 'X' is the Greek letter 'chi' rather than the English letter 'X'. TeX was created with mathematics in mind and it is still the premier system for producing books and articles that require complex typeset mathematical formulae. It also happens to be a very fine general-purpose typesetting system. Typesetting languages, at a low level, are inherently complex and learning to typeset in either troff or plain TeX can rapidly reach guru levels. To make TeX much easier for writers, Leslie Lamport created a set of easy-to-use macros for TeX which he dubbed LaTeX (pronounced 'LAY-tek'). These mature, powerful typesetting systems are available for free with Linux and are included with every CD distribution. If you have enough disk space, you can treat yourself to a whole new adventure by installing them and trying them out.

    Vector vs. Raster
Ed Pegg Jr., August 1, 2005 (Revised, August 10) I wasn't good with coloring books. Those scribbles and my freehand drawings almost caused me to fail kindergarten. In third grade, I encountered graph paper and rulers. Using a straightedge, I could connect two points with a line better than anyone. In geometry, I learned to make tangent circles. High school offered a drafting class as an alternative to art, so I learned to use a T-square, and how to ink lines. With the aid of a ruler, I've been drawing lines ever since. These days, I'm using programs to make lines and curves. Here's a line.
Figure 1. The line AB. The above image is GIF, a raster format. It's not really a line. It's a raster object, or a bitmap. The computer is getting information about how every pixel needs to be colored. If an art program opened it, I couldn't readily change it. Now, take a look at a vector image. (If you don't have Flash installed, figure 2 looks identical to figure 1.)
