Mon Apr 19 16:26:25 CEST 2004 Hi. I have a first question and that is if there's any place where I can get the "LaTeX companion" for free on the internet; if the answer is no, then isn't there something like "TeX by topic - A TeXician's reference" but for LaTeX? The other question is this: I'm interested in programming some macros for LaTeX/TeX and the thing would be to get rid of the slash and leave only LaTeX or only TeX. Which is the difference as to programming macros? Does LaTeX provides some facilities for programming in it that TeX doesn't? I hope my doubt is clear. Tue Apr 20 15:12:16 CEST 2004 Greetings, get the "LaTeX companion" for free on the internet; if the answer is no, No. then isn't there something like "TeX by topic - A TeXician's reference" but for LaTeX? Some LaTeX documentation is freely available, but I'm not sure there's anything as comprehensive as Victor's book. Anyway, see http://tug.org/interest.html#doc for the links I know about. If you find others, please write webmaster at tug.org. the thing would be to get rid of the slash and leave only LaTeX or only TeX. I'm not sure what you mean. Which is the difference as to programming macros? Does LaTeX provides some facilities for programming in it that TeX doesn't? In one way no, it's based on the same core primitives. But in practice yes, it's a completely different system with thousands of additional macros for programming and typesetting. BTW, this list is intended for discussion of the TeX Live documentation. You might have better luck on a more general list. Regards, karl

TeX course : Teaching TeX / LaTeX LaTeX is a popular text processing tool, especially in the sciences. You will learn the basics of LaTeX. LaTeX is a macro package on top of a programmable text processor, TeX. (TeX was written by Donald Knuth of Stanford university, LaTeX was written by Leslie Lamport of Digital Equipment Corporation. Both are computer scientists with an illustrious track record.) You will learn the basics of TeX programming, and its typesetting elements. LaTeX Last modified: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 A typesetting system based on the TeX programming language developed by Donald E. Knuth. Most people who use TeX, however, utilize one of several macro packages that provide an easier interface. The two most popular are LaTeX, originally written by Leslie Lamport, and plain TeX, written by Knuth. LaTeX provides higher-level macros, which makes it easier to format documents but sacrifices some of the flexibility of TeX. TeX is Don Knuth's macro language, written to typeset documents. It is also a Turing complete programming language, although it's not particularly pleasant to program in. The canonical source for learning the TeX language, both to write documents and to program, is the TeXbook by Don Knuth. There's also a comprehensive programmer's reference called TeX by topic which the author has generously made available free at his website. I don't think I'm doing as sophisticated Plain TeX programming as you do, but yes I'm primarily a Plain TeX person and I always feel a bit uncomfortable using LaTeX (a bit lazy, a bit as a traitor, and so forth).
To quote a comparison from the preface of the first edition of "LaTeX: a Document Preparation System" (that documenting LaTeX 2.09), I find it always frustrating to move from a "highly-tuned racing car" (Plain TeX) to a "comfortable family sedan" (LaTeX). Even if "the family sedan isn't meant to go as fast as a racing car or be as exciting to drive, but it's comfortable and gets you to the grocery store with no fuss".
There are however things which are unconvenient in Plain TeX and much easier in LaTeX, like:
- Writing itemized lists.
- Writing multilingual documents. I once had to write a report in French with passages in English, and I appreciated using the babel package to get proper hyphenation, space after punctuation, etc..
- Using different font sizes in your documents. Quite tedious in Plain TeX.
