Pakistan leaders vote to help fight terrorism
On Saturday, Musharraf said Pakistan would "help the international community fight terrorism." ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) As President Bush prepared to huddle again with his national security advisers, the government of Pakistan signaled Saturday it is willing to fulfill its pledge to "fully cooperate" with the United States in its war against those responsible for the World Trade Center and Pentagon terror attacks. During a meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani cabinet and security council voted unanimously to "help the international community fight terrorism." A spokesman said the government would immediately "hold consultations with the Pakistani people" to build a consensus for the decision. The United States has given the Pakistan government a "wish list" of actions it wants Pakistan to take. Included on that list is allowing, if requested, U.S. warplanes access to Pakistani airspace. "We are responding to the call of the international community in helping to see what we can do," said the Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Maleeha Lodhi. "We want to try to use the diplomatic option before more extreme ways to deal with the situation."

    145. Public Agenda Special Report: Terrorism
Public opinion polls and analyses related to what Americans are willing to do aspart of the war on terrorism.
    http://www.publicagenda.org/specials/terrorism/terror.htm
Last updated May 25, 2005 Overview
There has not been a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the fall of 2001. Yet the possibility is ever-present and guides much of what we do as a society. The "war on terrorism" is no mere metaphor; it has led us to two all-too-real wars in less than two years. At home, we live with periodic "orange alerts" and checkpoints.
While much has changed since Sept. 11, the "war on terrorism" debate boils down to a single theme: What are Americans willing to do? How much are we willing to spend in money, prestige, rights, lives? What bargains are we willing to make?
A great deal has already been accomplished. ( click here to continue
Biological and chemical weapons are cheap, hard to trace and potentially devastating, which is why terrorists find them so appealing. Public Agenda's overview on bioterrorism examines the history of these weapons and America's emergency preparedness efforts to deal with a potential attack.

The September 11th Sourcebooks The horrific September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon brought all of us here at the Archive feelings of rage at the hijackers, grief for the thousands who were murdered, and also determination that we will contribute to finding the best ways for America to respond. The Archive’s mission is to put on the record the primary source documentation that can enrich the policy debate, improve journalism, educate policymakers, and ensure that we don’t reinvent the wheel or repeat the mistakes of the past. To these ends, we have published a series of volumes called "The September 11th Sourcebooks." We have cast a wide net, because the policy debate itself is also ranging widely, from deployment options abroad to wiretap surveillance at home. The first volume In Volume II , Archive experts John Prados and Svetlana Savranskaya draw on declassified records and the memoirs of former Soviet officials to examine Soviet policymaking, military operations, and lessons learned from the last war in Afghanistan, a bloody, ten-year conflict that pitted Soviet military forces against CIA-backed Afghan rebels. The collection also includes excerpts from an essay written by analyst Steve Galster as an introduction to the Archive's microfiche collection

Antiterrorism bills may come to vote soon
By Manuel Perez-Rivas CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON The Bush administration's antiterrorism proposals are making progress in Congress after being slowed because of concerns from lawmakers and civil liberties groups that the measures would threaten constitutional rights. The House Judiciary Committee has approved its version, and Senate negotiators have reached agreement with the White House on a somewhat different set of proposals. The bills could come to a vote in both chambers next week. If approved in their current forms, the two bills would have to be reconciled because of differences between them. A key difference is a sunset clause in the House version that would cause the enhanced powers given to investigators to expire on December 31, 2003. The White House opposes that provision. "No one can guarantee that terrorism will sunset in two years," Attorney General John Ashcroft said at a news conference Thursday.

Chirac: France stands with U.S. vs. terrorism
Chirac: "Now we are faced with a conflict of a completely new nature." WASHINGTON (CNN) French President Jacques Chirac met with President Bush Tuesday and promised his country would support the United States in the fight against terrorism. It was the first formal U.S. visit by a head of state since last week's terrorist attacks on the United States "I want to tell President Bush, who is my friend, that we bring you the total solidarity of France and the French people. It is a solidarity of the heart," Chirac said in a brief news conference before the new leaders began their talks. "We are completely determined to fight by your side this new type of evil, of absolute evil, which is terrorism. France is prepared and available to discuss all means to fight and eradicate this evil." Bush praised the French president as a "man of vision" and said he was glad for France's help in this "new kind of war."

    Rugby tours overcome terrorism fears
Australian rugby union players have responded positively to security briefings SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) Two Australian rugby tours to Europe are now going ahead after players' terrorism fears were allayed by assurances of beefed-up security arrangements. The Australian Rugby League (ARL) has announced a shortened three-test tour of Britain after initially cancelling a longer tour running from Oct. 20 to Nov. 24. British rugby league officials and the media had attacked the cancellation decision, which was prompted by fears expressed by many senior Australian players. There were also threats of legal action due to loss of revenue by tour organizers. Meanwhile, a six-week Australian Rugby Union tour to Europe will depart this Saturday, with no players withdrawing because of safety fears. The players responded positively to a security briefing given Monday, officials said.

'You are either with us or against us'
Bush addresses an antiterrorism summit in Warsaw via satellite phone before meeting with Chirac on Tuesday. var clickExpire = "-1"; //> WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush said Tuesday that there was no room for neutrality in the war against terrorism. In a joint news conference with French President Jacques Chirac, Bush said coalition partners would be called upon to back up their support with action. He said he would deliver that message in his speech Saturday to the United Nations. "A coalition partner must do more than just express sympathy, a coalition partner must perform," Bush said. "That means different things for different nations. Some nations don't want to contribute troops and we understand that. Other nations can contribute intelligence-sharing. ... But all nations, if they want to fight terror, must do something." Bush said he would not point out any specific countries in his speech.

Christiane Amanpour: Building worldwide alliances to combat terrorism
Christiane Amanpour is CNN's chief international correspondent. She reported for this chat interview from Islamabad, Pakistan on Tuesday, September 25, 2001. CNN: Greetings and welcome Christiane Amanpour. It is always good to have you join us. AMANPOUR: Hello I'm pleased to be with you for the next several minutes. CNN: Christiane, what are European Union (EU) officials doing in Pakistan? AMANPOUR: European Union Officials have come in support of the United States to try to rally the Islamic and Arab world to join the coalition against terror. They are carrying the specific message that the U.S.-led coalition is not against Islam, but against terrorism. They are also promising Pakistan that they will restart economic and trade relations that were frozen right after the military coup here in 1999, and they are calling on all the countries in the Islamic world to do their part to shut down the financing of terrorism. They are visiting Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt. CHAT PARTICIPANT: Has anyone thought of or suggested sending [large quantities of] medical supplies, food and water and shelters to the Afgan border in Pakistan? It would be a grand gesture on the part of the U.S. and a solid PR coup d'état.

Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy: Women in the war against terrorism
Lt. Gen. Claudia J. Kennedy (Ret.) is the author of "Generally Speaking." When she became a three-star general in 1997, she became the Army's highest-ranking woman ever. CNN: Welcome to CNN.com Gen. Kennedy. We are pleased to have you with us today. LT. GEN. CLAUDIA KENNEDY: Thank you very much. I'm glad to see that there are so many people interested in what's going on around the world, as well as in our own country, and it's probably a first for many of us to realize that the operation is in our own backyard. CNN: What kinds of military roles will women play in this new war against terrorism? KENNEDY: The roles that women will play in this new operation will be the same ones they've been trained for their time in the military. Women are in all fields of the Army, other than infantry, armor, and artillery. So, the kinds of jobs you see women doing include intelligence, signals and communications, engineering, ordinance, and many different logistics jobs. CHAT PARTICIPANT: I was wondering if any women were serving in Special Forces on the ground in Afghanistan?
