In the new report published by Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, CDI Senior Advisor Lawrence Korb argues that without diminishing America’s ability to fight terrorists, America can safely trim $60 billion (15 percent) from President George W. Bush’s proposed fiscal year 2006 Pentagon budget, freeing up much-needed funding for America’s broader national security needs. September 22, 2005

Roger Cossack: Legal fallout of terrorism and the war against it
Roger Cossack is co-host of CNN's legal show, "Burden of Proof." As a legal analyst, Cossack has provided commentary for the network on a wide variety of cases from the O.J. Simpson trial to the impeachment and trial of President Bill Clinton. He joined the CNN.com chat room from Washington D.C. CNN: Thank you for joining us today, Roger Cossack, and welcome. ROGER COSSACK: Hello to everyone. CNN: What will be the effect on civil liberties of anti-terrorism measures such as easier surveillance or search and seizure? Where is the line drawn between security and privacy? COSSACK: We in America, fortunately, have never suffered through an event like what has just occurred, so in many ways, this is all very new to us. But yet it seems clear that we need increased security, and increased security obviously will create tensions regarding our civil liberties. I am not sure where the line should be drawn. I know that if we turn the country into a police state, then we have lost the essence of America. Yet, we cannot continue with business as usual. Where that line is, I simply don't know. Col. John Alexander: How the war on terrorism will be fought
During Colonel John Alexander's varied career with the United States Army, he held key positions in special operations and intelligence. In the '60s, Dr. Alexander commanded Special Forces "A" Teams in Vietnam and Thailand. He is a leading advocate for the development of non-lethal weapons. CNN: Welcome to CNN.com Newsroom, Col. John Alexander. We are pleased to have you with us today. COL. JOHN ALEXANDER: It's a great pleasure to be here. I think this is a very trying time, and a time when we need to get a lot of accurate information out. CNN: You have a particular interest in non-lethal weapons. Could you describe what these are and how they might be used in the war on terrorism? ALEXANDER: Non-lethal weapons comprise a very broad category, and they can include chemical, electromagnetic, low-kinetic impact, acoustic, and some will even include information warfare. In the war against terrorism, I think they will be more important than ever before. Now, we should not be looking for the use of non-lethal weapons in Afghanistan. The war against terrorism is a very broad concept, and one that many in the media are missing. The majority of the war will be fought in the shadows and much will take place in major metro areas, such as London, Paris, Cairo, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, etc. The action there will be to root out terrorist cells.

Turkey commits troops to war on terrorism
ISTANBUL, Turkey (CNN) Turkish soldiers will soon join a growing international contingent of troops in Afghanistan involved in the U.S.-led war on terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom, Turkish military sources said Thursday. Initially, 12 soldiers will be sent in an observational role, and a total deployment of 261 troops is expected by the end of January. The commitment of forces by the Turks is being called open-ended. The Turkish soldiers will join British and French forces already deployed in Afghanistan. Earlier this week, the Canadian minister of national defense announced the commitment of about 750 soldiers to the coalition campaign against terrorism and said they will be deployed in Kandahar. Conversational Terrorism
All of the techniques listed in this document have actually been witnessed, told to us by someone else, or dreamed up. They are described in first person for clarity of motive. The intent of detailing and naming these insidious tactics is so that the reader may AVOID USING THEM, to quickly recognize if someone else is using them, and for fun. There is much humor in the way people (consciously or unconsciously) conversationally cheat. It is hoped that exposing these tactics will help muzzle the growing abuse in our conversational landscape. Give copies to both perpetrators and victims (only NOT for profit use). The examples are overblown in an attempt to be both clear and funny. Use your imagination to think of how you (perish the thought) and others have used these techniques in the past. They have been grouped by major category, with the best (worst!) saved for last. First, we have the Ad Hominem Variants where you attack the person as a way to avoid truth, science, or logic which might otherwise prove you wrong. Next are the Sleight of Mind Fallacies , which act as "mental magic" to make sure the unwanted subject disappears. Then, we move on to

Ashcroft cites 'monumental progress' in U.S. war on terrorism
Attorney General John Ashcroft was interviewed Wednesday by the Associated Press. Story Tools WASHINGTON (AP) Citizens jittery over the nation's high alert status should know that progress is being made in the war on terror, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Wednesday. Seven terrorist suspects have been caught through new border security measures and 104 people convicted of terror-related charges, he said in an interview with The Associated Press. Successful prosecutions have led to cooperation from defendants, providing information that has "disrupted groups of individuals who were working together to assist in terrorism or perhaps commit acts of terrorism," Ashcroft said. "Prevention is our number one priority. It is more important than prosecution," he said. "But very frequently these priorities do not compete, they complement. In many instances prosecution has been a real aid to our prevention effort by helping generate valuable intelligence." As Ashcroft spoke in his office at Justice Department headquarters, the United States remained on high alert for potential terrorism amid dire warnings from FBI Director Robert Mueller and CIA Director George J. Tenet about a possibly imminent large-scale attack.

OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) Global warming poses a greater long-term threat to humanity than terrorism because it could force hundreds of millions from their homes and trigger an economic catastrophe, Canadian Environment Minister David Anderson said. "Current preoccupation is with terrorism, but in the long term climate change will outweigh terrorism as an issue for the international community," he said. "Terrorism will come and go, it has in the past...and it's very important. But climate change is going to make some very fundamental changes to human existence on the planet." Anderson said Canada would need to cut its emissions of greenhouse gases by 60 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. Canada has ratified the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which calls for a 6 percent cut from 1990 levels by 2012.
