Rules for aliens changed, anti-terrorism task forces established
Ashcroft By Manuel Perez-Rivas CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) Attorney General John Ashcroft announced Tuesday that the Immigration and Naturalization Service will allow aliens to be detained for an indefinite period of time during emergencies or other extraordinary circumstances, in response to the series of terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Ashcroft also said he has ordered the creation of an anti-terrorism task force at every U.S. Attorney's office across the country, in a bid to improve the flow of information among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and to help craft strategy to prevent terrorism across the country. "The details that we have learned and the enormous destruction and devastation that was caused by last Tuesday's attack have brought us to a turning point in our country's fight against terrorism and the preservation of the safety and security of our society," Ashcroft said at a Justice Department news conference.

Powell: U.S. and India 'united on terrorism'
Pakistani forces go on high alert
Powell is seeking to ease tensions between South Asia's nuclear neighbors NEW DELHI, India (CNN) U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has told his Indian counterpart that the American-led fight against terrorism encompasses all forms of terrorism worldwide, including that faced by India. Speaking at a news conference following talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, Powell said: "We deplore terrorism wherever it exists, whether on September 11 or on October 1 in Srinagar." The latter incident referred to by Powell was a suicide bombing at the Kashmiri state assembly, in which 38 people died. India has blamed Kashmiri militants backed by Pakistan for carrying out the attack. "The United States and India stand united against terrorism and that includes terrorism directed against India as well," Powell said.

White House sees Hollywood role in war on terrorism
From John King CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush's top political strategist plans to meet with an array of entertainment executives Sunday to discuss the war on terrorism and ways that Hollywood stars and films might work in concert, in ways both formal and informal, with the administration's communications strategy. The effort is spearheaded by senior Bush adviser Karl Rove and Jack Valenti, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, who attended a White House meeting earlier this week to lay the groundwork for the session. The meeting is set for 11 a.m. local time at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. A final roster of attendees is not set, but an industry source said major studio executives and and network entertainment chiefs were invited along with "top tier" creative minds from Hollywood. Barry Glassner: Dealing with fear and rumor in the wake of terrorism
Barry Glassner is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California. His book, "The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things" (Basic Books), has been on bestseller lists and was named a Best Book of the Year by Knight-Ridder newspapers and by the Los Angeles Times Book Review. He joined the CNN.com chat room from California. CNN: Welcome to CNN.com, Professor Barry Glassner. We are pleased to have you with us today. GLASSNER: Thank you for inviting me. CNN: Last week's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had a huge impact on everyone's lives in this country. What types of fears have been spreading around? GLASSNER: I think there are fears that are justified, and fears that are not justified, and probably counter-productive. We have good reason to be much more concerned about terrorism now than we have in the past. At the same time, though, all sorts of rumors and false scares have been spreading in the wake of these horrific events. The last thing we need as individuals or as a country right now are superfluous fears and scares.

The Terrorist Attack on America
Foreign Affairs is making available previously published articles that contribute to an understanding of the tragic attacks on New York and Washington. Several of the essays analyze the nature of contemporary terrorism and the capabilities of the United States to combat it. Other essays provide the Middle Eastern and radical Islamic contexts for so much recent terrorism, including, apparently, the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Pakistan's Jihad Culture
Jessica Stern
(November/December 2000)
Radical Islamic groups, strongly represented in the Pakistani military and tacitly supported by the government, are destabilizing the country and the region and providing critical support to the Taliban regime in neighboring Afghanistan.
"By facilitating the activities of the irregulars in Kashmir, the Pakistani government is inadvertently promoting internal sectarianism, supporting international terrorists, weakening the prospect for peace in Kashmir, damaging Pakistan's international image, spreading a narrow and violent version of Islam throughtout the region, and increasing tensions with India- all against the interest of Pakistan as a whole."

Howard Kurtz: Media ethics during the war on terrorism
Howard Kurtz hosts CNN's weekly program, Reliable Sources, which scrutinizes the media's fairness and objectivity. He is the media reporter for The Washington Post, and writes a regular column called Media Notes. He joined CNN.com chat room from Washington, DC. CNN: Welcome back to CNN.com Newsroom, Howard Kurtz. What can you tell us about the conference call that National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice held with television network chiefs regarding the use of videotaped messages from al-Qaeda? KURTZ: Rice was very careful to cast this as a voluntary request, because I think the Bush White House is sensitive to the notion that it is strong-arming the press. But she made the case that the networks might be allowing Osama bin Laden to communicate with his followers through coded messages by giving him such unfettered access to the airwaves. It didn't take the news chiefs of CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox very long to agree that it would be better if they reviewed these bin Laden tapes before throwing them on the air. I'd be concerned if the networks refused to run such tapes, because even though bin Laden's diatribes are quite chilling, it's important for us to understand the thinking, or at least the rhetoric, of terrorists during a war on terrorism.

Ridge announces terrorism 'Ready Campaign'
Ridge announces the Homeland Security "Ready Campaign" in a news conference on Wednesday. Story Tools RELATED Ready.gov Web site CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge on Wednesday announced a "Ready Campaign" to advise families on what they can do to protect themselves against terrorism. The program includes public service announcements that encourage families to have a communications plan so members can reach each other in an emergency; to make a supply kit with flashlights, batteries, water and other necessities; and to learn more about terrorism. "The threat of terrorism forces us to make a choice: We can be afraid or we can be ready," Ridge said. "Today, America's families declare we will not be afraid and will be ready." "Our message is this: We cannot always predict an attack; we can always prepare. There are simple things you and your family can do to prepare for the unlikely but possible terrorist incident namely, make a kit, make a plan and be informed." "This is not just a response to terrorism," Ridge said. "We believe it is a deterrence."

The Supreme Court could soon experience a dramatic change in its balance of power between its liberal and conservative factions due to several key events that have unfolded over the past few months. The events began back in July when Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her plans to retire from the Court effective upon the nomination and confirmation of a successor. Shortly after this announcement, President Bush nominated conservative jurist John G. Roberts Jr. to replace O'Connor, and most recently, a second seat opened on the Court's bench when Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist passed away on September 3, 2005.
