You can build your own workstation from old or new parts. We used a lab full of TC500's at NECC in New Orleans . They have no moving parts, are totally silent, very small and make a great workstation. The HP t5305 is one of several clients available. James McQuillan is the lead developer of the LTSP.org project. You can also re-use hardware. Technology Rescue.com is a good source for inexpensive, reconditioned workstations. They also sell complete, turn-key K12LTSP labs with servers already configured. If you know of other hardware solutions for small LTSP terminals let me know and I'll add them to this page. ;-) Paul pnelson@riverdale.k12.or.us

K12LTSP 4.4.1 is out!!!
K12LTSP is based on RedHat Fedora Linux and the LTSP terminal server packages. It's easy to install and configure. It's distributed under the GNU General Public License . That means it's free and it's based on Open Source software.
Once installed K12LTSP lets you boot diskless workstations from an applications server. You can use old PC's as diskless clients or buy new ones for under $200 each.
All applications run on the terminal server. Workstations are "thin." They have no software or hard drives. Thin-clients are perfect for schools because they are easy to install and require little maintenance. They are reliable and immune to malicious tampering and viruses.

terminal Last modified: Sunday, September 01, 1996 (1) A device that enables you to communicate with a computer . Generally, a terminal is a combination of keyboard and display screen Terminals are sometimes divided into three classes based on how much processing power they contain:
  • intelligent terminal : A stand-alone device that contains main memory and a CPU
  • smart terminal : Contains some processing power, but not as much as an intelligent terminal.
  • dumb terminal : Has no processing capabilities. It relies entirely on the computer's processor (2) In networking , a terminal is a personal computer or workstation connected to a mainframe . The personal computer usually runs terminal emulation software that makes the mainframe think it is like any other mainframe terminal.

    SWG-C
    Electronic Settlements Working Group
    Introduction
SWG-C of the Electronic Settlements Working Group has considered basic requirements of and construction of infrastructures for all-round standard terminals, based on the precondition that construction of terminal infrastructures is the highest priority for the wider use of IC card systems. SWG-C set the following preconditions for consideration and organization of basic requirements of the terminal:
[1] IC-card terminals should make the most of existing networks and terminals.
[2] IC-card terminals should be compatible with magnetic card terminals.
[3] While there are two types of IC card; contact type and contactless type, the contact type should be given the higher priority for this fiscal year.
[4] Specifications of the terminal should be consistent with those used in other countries.
[5] It should be taken into consideration that only proprietary terminals will be connected to an external line.
[6] Terminals should be used at shops for real shopping.

    SELF-DESCRIPTION
    Date: Wed, 07 Sep 94 13:06:19 EDT
Digital Equipment Corporation's DECserver family of Network Access Servers support IP, IPX, and AppleTalk over PPP, with interoperability demonstrated with all the commonly available client implementations for all three protocols. The DECserver family includes the DECserver 90M, 90TL, 700, and 900TM. The 90M and 90TL are 8 asynch line servers, supporting speeds up 57.6 Kbps. The 700 comes in two models: an 8 asynch line version using DB25 connectors that support full modem control, and a 16 asynch line model. The 900 is a 32 asynch line server. The 700 and 900 class machines support speeds up to 115.2 Kbps. All work well with any Hayes compatible modem. All except the 90TL have a FLASH RAM option, or can be loaded either via BOOTP or MOP. For more information about DECserver Network Access Server, contact the Digital Technical Consulting Center at 1-800-DIGITAL (1-800-344-4825) and press "1" to order or "2" to speak with a technical consultant.

    Xterm
Software terminal emulation under the X Window System
The graphical user interfaces of most Linux and Unix operating environments are built on the foundation of the X Window System, an open technology developed by a consortium of vendors and educational institutions and now administered by the X.Org section of the X/Open Group The basic xterm application of the X Window System does a decent emulation of a DEC VT102, and most variants can also emulate the Tektronix 4014 for vector-graphics display. As with most Unix things, basic documentation on xterm may be viewed by typing " man xterm " at the shell prompt (or look here Thomas Dickey has enhanced the original concept with an xterm version that supports ANSI/ISO color (including background-color erase) and most functions of the DEC VT220 terminal except for a handful (DECSTR, the KAM and SRM modes, the ones pertaining the doublesize and soft characters, and, of course, blink). With the usual distributed xterm code, if you want such amenities as scrollbars for the window, you'll have to add some options into your ~/.Xdefaults

    Low-Level Terminal Interface
This chapter describes functions that are specific to terminal devices. You can use these functions to do things like turn off input echoing; set serial line characteristics such as line speed and flow control; and change which characters are used for end-of-file, command-line editing, sending signals, and similar control functions. Most of the functions in this chapter operate on file descriptors. See section Low-Level Input/Output , for more information about what a file descriptor is and how to open a file descriptor for a terminal device.
    Identifying Terminals
The functions described in this chapter only work on files that correspond to terminal devices. You can find out whether a file descriptor is associated with a terminal by using the isatty function. Prototypes for both isatty and ttyname are declared in the header file `unistd.h' Function: int isatty (int filedes This function returns if filedes is a file descriptor associated with an open terminal device, and otherwise.

The Terminal Services component of the Windows 2000 Server operating system delivers the Windows 2000 Professional desktop and the latest Windows-based applications to a wide variety of desktops, including those that normally would not be able to run Windows. Through terminal emulation, Terminal Services allows the same set of applications to run on diverse types of desktop hardware. For organizations wanting to more flexibly deploy applications and control desktop management costs, a Terminal Services architecture offers an important enhancement to the traditional two or three tier client-server architecture based on servers and full scale personal computers.
    Terminal Services Architecture
Terminal Services extends the model of distributed computing by allowing PCs to operate in a server-based computing environment. With Terminal Services running on a Windows 2000-based server, all client application execution, data processing, and data storage occur on the server. Applications and user desktops are transmitted over the network and displayed via terminal emulation software. Similarly, print streams, keyboard input, and mouse clicks are also transmitted over the network between the server and the terminal emulation software. Each user logs on and sees only their individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system and is independent of any other client session.

How can I make my program not echo input, like login does when asking for your password? There is an easy way, and a slightly harder way: The easy way, is to use , which is probably found on almost all Unices. It takes a string to use as a prompt. It will read up to an EOF or newline and returns a pointer to a static area of memory holding the string typed in. The harder way is to use and , both use a struct termios to manipulate the terminal. The following two routines should allow echoing, and non-echoing mode. Both routines used, are defined by the POSIX standard.

How can I read single characters from the terminal? My program is always waiting for the user to press RETURN Terminals are usually in canonical mode, where input is read in lines after it is edited. You may set this into non-canonical mode, where you set how many characters should be read before input is given to your program. You also may set the timer in non-canonical mode terminals to 0, this timer flushs your buffer at set intervals. By doing this, you can use to grab the key pressed immediately by the user. We use
