X-Terminals (the disk less workstations that boot off a x-term server) are no longer supported at Fermilab. This applies for both the NCD and Tektronix's x-terminals.
The computer security problems for this style of computing had grown larger than their functionality.
The official end of support date was November 1, 2004.

9.1 Braille terminals driven from Screen Memory
These are braille terminals that can read the screen memory directly in a normal text mode. It is possible to use it to work with Linux for almost all of the things that a seeing user can do on the console, including installation. However, it has a problem with the scrolling of the normal Linux kernel, so a kernel patch needs to be applied. See Patching the Kernel for Braillex and Brailloterm
Braillex
The Braillex is a terminal which is designed to read directly from the Screen memory, thus getting round any problems with MS-DOS programs which don't behave strangely. If you could see it on screen, then this terminal should be able to display it in braille. In Linux, unfortunately, screen handling is done differently from MS-DOS, so this has to be changed somewhat. To get this terminal to work, you have to apply the patch given below in section Patching the Kernel . Once this is done. The Braillex becomes one of the most convenient ways to use Linux as it allows all of the information normally available to a seeing person to be read. Other terminals don't start working until the operating system has completely booted. The Braillex is available with two arrangements of braille cells (80x1 or 40x2) and there is a model, called the IB 2-D which also has a vertical bar to show information about all of the lines of the screen (using 4 programmable dots per screen line)

85. Adaptation To Terminal Hardware, Operating Systems And Communication Protocols
Web services and applications to the growing variety of WAP phones and terminals. The adaptation took into account the terminal and network capabilities
http://www.vtt.fi/tte/tte31/adapta.html
Adaptation
The variety of mobile Internet services and devices is increasing. New services will reach a growing number of users, which means that user heterogeneity will increase. In this, providing the adaptation of services to different contexts of use is one of the major challenges when moving towards device-independent web. The adaptation could be based on the available information regarding the client device and user agent (browser), the network used, user preferences, contextual information etc. The key issues include the adaptation of rich multimedia content and applications according to diverse parameters. Adaptation to all these demands is one of our core research topics.
Adaptation and profiles
All the above information should be available to the software components performing the adaptation. The information may be represented in the form of profiles. In that, for instance, OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) User Agent Profile (UAProf) specification is targeted to provide a basis for the adaptation. The adaptation poses also several challenges also to context description including semantic information (cf. Semantic Web ). For the purposes of adaptation, there is need to formalise additional metadata that characterises content. W3C has a

Please direct questions to the listed contact for each vendor. Why do you have multiple vendors listed? We made the commitment in our RFP to publish the prices of all vendors who supplied hardware meeting our specifications. We also wanted to have vendors in different parts of the country to help you reduce shipping costs. We spent a lot of time testing hardware for use as diskless workstations and we wanted to make sure you had access to the systems that performed well for us. Making an X Terminal from a PC
By Patrick Swieskowski
An X terminal is a great way to expand the computing presence in a home or office. (We're talking about a PC that functions as an X terminal, not NEC's dedicated X-Terminal device.) They're fast, cool, a great demonstration of a Unix system's power, and, most importantly, dirt cheap. The following chronicles my experience in creating an X terminal from old PC hardware and connecting it to my Debian GNU/Linux system. My server is a Pogo Altura with a one gigahertz AMD Athlon processor. Pogo is a great company to go to if you don't want to piece together your own system or pay for a Windows license with a prebuilt system from somewhere else. I run Debian on it, so the X terminal will use that also. That's enough background information for now.
Root filesystem setup
The X terminal will boot off of a custom kernel on a floppy and then get its root filesystem over NFS from the server. The first step, then, is to create this root filesystem. You could copy over file after file by hand from a currently running system, or you can take a shorter approach like I did and just use the base

DESCRIPTION
This section describes the interface to the terminal drivers in the sys- tem. Terminal Special Files Each hardware terminal port on the system usually has a terminal special device file associated with it in the directory ``/dev/'' (for example, ``/dev/tty03''). When a user logs into the system on one of these hard- ware terminal ports, the system has already opened the associated device and prepared the line for normal interactive use (see getty(8) .) There is also a special case of a terminal file that connects not to a hardware terminal port, but to another program on the other side. These special terminal devices are called ptys and provide the mechanism necessary to give users the same interface to the system when logging in over a net- work (using rlogin(1) , or telnet(1) for example). Even in these cases the details of how the terminal file was opened and set up is already handled by special software in the system. Thus, users do not normally need to worry about the details of how these lines are opened or used. Also, these lines are often used for dialing out of a system (through an out-calling modem), but again the system provides programs that hide the details of accessing these terminal special files (see

Jenny Craig, eat your heart out. We can let you in on a secret that shows how to shed clock cycles and GHz not to mention hours and more importantly dollars off your desktop maintenance budget, by going thin. And the bonus is it also stretches your time between desktop hardware replacements saving those all important dollars.
Thin-client computing may not be for everyone but it is most likely suitable in some way, shape, or form to the majority of enterprises out there today. While Moore's Law is definitely on hiatus for the time being, at least until someone figures out a way to use those hundreds of thousands of wasted clock cycles the average business PC user is throwing away each day, we may as well try and focus all this new found processing power and harness it in a more manageable form, which is where the server comes in.

ABSTRACT
This document summarizes the facilities provided by the 4.4BSD version of the UNIX* operating system. It does not attempt to act as a tutorial for use of the system nor does it attempt to explain or justify the design of the system facilities. It gives neither motivation nor implementation details, in favor of brevity. The first section describes the basic kernel functions provided to a UNIX process: process naming and protection, memory management, software interrupts, object references (descriptors), time and statistics functions, and resource controls. These facilities, as well as facilities for bootstrap, shutdown and process accounting, are provided solely by the kernel. The second section describes the standard system abstractions for files and file systems, communication, terminal handling, and process control and debugging. These facilities are implemented by the operating system or by network server processes.

NCD X terminal mini HOWTO
Ian Hodge, ian at permedia.ca
v1.09, March 27, 2000 This document describes how to connect an NCD X terminal to a UNIX host
Introduction
Requirements
Introduction This document describes how an X terminal manufactured by NCD (Network Computing Devices) can be connected to and booted from a UNIX host using BootP (boot protocol). Many terminals are also capable of booting with RARP, NFS or locally from a PCMCIA card or over a serial link (either directly or with a modem). Although the material in this document was prepared based on experience with a single model of X terminal, much of the information applies to other models and other X terminals generally. There is also an Linux X terminal mini HOWTO document (declared obsolete by HOWTO maintainers at the time of writing and therefore possibly not available in all Linux distributions) which overlaps material from this document. That document covers X terminal information more generally.
