Prairie View Gets Set To Play Baylor In NCAA Tennis Championships
By Andrew Roberts
The Panthers will face the number one ranked Baylor Bears (28-0) on Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas in first round tournament action.
The Panthers earned an automatic bid by winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament, defeating Alcorn State (4-2) in the championship match. The victory gave Prairie View their first tennis title in over 30 years.
“This season our team has put in a lot of hard work,” said head tennis coach John Cochran. “It takes solid players to build a championship program. I have been fortunate to recruit players that know how to play the game and how to win.”
The Baylor Bears enter their match against Prairie View with an undefeated 28-0 record. The Bears were awarded for their play this season with a number one overall seed in the tournament. Baylor owns a 52-match win streak, currently the nation’s longest active win streak.
“Baylor is arguably the best team in the country,” said Cochran. “We have our work cut out for us but we plan to go at them full force. If we compete the way we are capable of playing it should be a very interesting match.”

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither

By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')

Corporates Open To Sponsoring Other Olympic Sports, But Seek Tax Sops By Sanjay Sharma , Section In The News
Posted on Sun Dec 12th, 2004 at 02:54:59 PM EST Nithya Subramanian Richa Mishra are reporting in The Hindu Businessline that: India Inc now seems to be willing to support other Olympic sports. However, it is hoping that the Government will offer some tax incentives to companies investing in sporting activities other than cricket. The Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has written to the Finance Ministry stating that the Indian industry would come forward and assist the Government in making a concerted effort to promote other sports if adequate incentives are provided to them. "A weighted average deduction of 200 per cent may be provided to companies on the expenditure incurred on development of sports," it has said. According to a survey conducted by the industry association, about 95 per cent of the respondents felt that private participation is necessary in nurturing, developing and sustaining sports and almost all the respondents stated that private-public partnership would help develop the overall performance of Indians in sports.
