More than 500.000 people - spectators, athletes, officials, Mass Media, staff, volunteers - will be circulating daily within the OAKA spaces. OLYMPIC STADIUM
The Olympic Stadium is situated at Maroussi, a northern suburb of Athens and it is part

The General Secretariat of Sports has scheduled to complete the Stadium's renovation by the end of 2003. ATHENS 2004 and the Ministry of Culture have asked Santiago Calatrava, the well-known architect, to redesign and upgrade OAKA in an innovative and creative way, including the new roof structure for Olympic Stadium. The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

    Olympic Tennis Medalists
    History
Lawn tennis, as it was then known, was an Olympic sport from 1896 to 1924, although the women's singles and mixed doubles events were first played in 1900 and women's doubles wasn't added until 1920. In 1908 and 1912, there was competition both indoors and outdoors. The sport was dropped from the Olympics after 1924. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 and became a medal sport again in 1988. A single-elimination tournament determines medal placings. The top 16 players are seeded in singles, the top eight teams in doubles. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992, semfinal losers shared bronze medals. In all other years, they've had a playoff match for the medal. Top of page

Tennis is an attractive, dynamic and highly popular sport at all skill levels. But to compete at a high level successfully, athletes must develop special skills such as technique, stamina, speed, reflexes and imagination. Among Tennis athletes, an Olympic medal is considered as the highest distinction:
Lindsay Davenport: “Winning at the Olympic Games was amazing. It is my biggest success.”
Andre Agassi: “In sports, nothing is as important as winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.”
Steffi Graf: “Winning a gold medal is for me more valuable than any other money prize. I am certain that all athletes participating at the Olympic Games feel the same. Nothing compares to the Olympic Games.”
Boris Becker: “Nothing compares to this experience – not even Wimbledon. There you compete for yourself whereas here for an entire country.”

[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

      Did You Know?
It is thought that the word tennis comes from the French word tenez, meaning "play" or "take it."
Steffi Graf has won a total of 22 grand slam singles titles over her brilliant career, but enjoyed one of her most gratifying moments as a tennis player in when she won the gold for her native West Germany. In , Americans Andre Agassi and Lindsay Davenport used their home court advantage to its fullest, winning their first-ever gold medals in Atlanta. The games will be played at the Olympic Tennis Center of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. The hard surface is the same one used at the U.S. Open.
