A history of Olympic timekeeping technology : from averaging 25 observers' stopwatch times in 1932 to 2004's photo finish that takes 1,000 pictures per second.
posted by kirkaracha to Olympics at 11:23 AM CST (6 comments total) This year's newest technology is the beach volleyball radar gun. Timers will use them to clock the speed of spikes and serves. Identical to the radar guns used in tennis, the devices rely on the Doppler effect to determine the speed of the ball. The displacement speed is calculated by comparing the ultrasonic frequencies picked up by the radar and the speed at which the echo is returned
Okay, I've watched quite a bit of beach volleyball this year, both men's and women's, and have yet to see this. Am I just channel surfing at the wrong time?
Sweet article, though. Thanks, kirk.

Thursday, September 28 Kafelnikov digs deep for gold Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who arrived in Sydney despairing of his form after the worst slump of his career, won a marathon battle with Germany’s Tommy Haas to claim the Olympic men’s tennis gold medal for Russia. A see-saw, sometimes scrappy match finally ended after three hours and 35 minutes with the former world No 1 winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to complete a remarkable renaissance in the Olympic arena. It was a victory for which the Russian had to dig deep into his mental and physical reserves. Haas, 22, went into the final set looking the more likely winner after dominating the fourth set and coming out firing on all cylinders at the start of the fifth. But just as victory looked within his grasp he stumbled, two unforced errors in the eighth game of the final set handing Kafelnikov, 26, the chance to serve out for the match. The big Russian made no mistake, powerfully killing off the match to secure an Olympic gold medal that he said would mean more to him and his country than his 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open titles. "It is absolutely fantastic," he said. "When I lost that fourth set, I told myself ’If you lose this match you are going to regret it for the rest of your life'."

Clijsters turns down Olympic place
Clijsters: "I want to remain fair to the people I made a contract with." Story Tools BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) World No. 2 Kim Clijsters will not play tennis for Belgium at next summer's Olympic Games after a wrangle over sponsored clothing. The 20-year-old said she will "remain fair" to her own backer Italian manufacturer Fila rather than wear rival Adidas' official Belgian uniform in Athens. "As long as my clothing remains an issue, it is impossible for me to go to the Olympics," Clijsters has said. She confirmed her decision on Monday. "I've decided not to go to the Olympic Games," Clijsters said in a diary on her official Web site. "I want to remain fair to the people I made a contract with. They were the only ones who wanted me two years ago." Clijsters wished her compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne already sponsored by Adidas luck at the Olympics. "I really hope Justine takes the gold in Athens and hopefully the other Belgians take plenty of medals as well," she said. "I'll be their number one supporter."

Power and glory of the Games Print article email story Paris - The Olympic Games, an international festival of sport which originated in ancient Greece, were revived in the 19th century by a French aristocrat worried by young Frenchmen not getting enough physical education at school. The ancient Olympics were mainly about the ruling classes preparing for war and barred women. Successive presidents of the International Olympic Committee, which Baron Pierre de Coubertin set up in 1894, were just as eager to keep the working classes and women in their place. He took as his model the British and American upper class educational system of enlightened paternalism. The Greeks had twice tried to revive the Games, in 1859 and 1870, so the first Olympic Games, since the Roman emperor Theodosius had banned them in AD 393, were held in Athens. 1896 Athens The nine sports on the Olympic programme were athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling. A Greek architect Georgios Averoff picked up most of the bill and many of the competitors were simply tourists visiting Athens at the time.

610 4th Ave. S.E. Decatur, AL 35602 (256)341-4930 The Decatur Parks and Recreation Department is a department of the local municipal government operated by a permanent, full-time staff, with the assistance of a volunteer citizens advisory board. Board appointments are made by the City Council for a term of five years. The Parks and Recreation Department operates four recreation community centers, one outdoor and one indoor swimming pool, Wilson Morgan Softball Complex and Tennis Center, and 22 parks encompassing 500-acres. These include 12 developed playgrounds, 28 lighted tennis courts, an 11 acre laser graded, irrigated, and lighted soccer complex, and numerous lighted and unlighted softball and baseball fields. We are developing a 77 acre park which will include a 30 acre laser graded and irrigated soccer/football venue with sub-grade drainage. It will also include a 4 field Dixie Youth baseball complex, tennis courts, a walking trail, playground, and splash pad. This project should be completed in 2005-2006. There is also a recreation center in the master plan that doesn't have a current construction date. The Decatur City Cemetery is also operated and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department.
