Of Gold Medals, U.S. Titles and Other Things
In 1988, Steffi Graf established a record that might never be broken a "Golden Slam." She won all four Grand Slam titles - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open plus the Olympic gold medal in the same year.
In 1996, Andre Agassi became the fourth player to win singles titles at the Olympics and the U.S. Nationals. Agassi, the 1994 US Open men's singles champion, won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in men's singles, defeating Spain's Sergi Bruguera in the final. Others that have achieved this prestigious double include Graf (1988 gold medal, 1988-89, '93, '95 U.S. champion); Helen Wills Moody (1924 gold medal, 1923-25, '27-29, '31 U.S. champion) and Beals Wright (1904 gold medal, 1905 U.S. champion).
In doubles, Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, Ken Flach and Robert Seguso and Helen Wills Moody and Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman are the only three tandems to win both the Olympic gold medal and a U.S. doubles title. Woodbridge and Woodforde won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in men's doubles and the US Open doubles title in 1995. Flach and Seguso were Olympic champions in 1988 and US Open champions in 1985. Wills Moody and Hotchkiss Wightman were Olympic champions in 1924 and won the U.S. title as a pair in 1928. IBM Corp United States Tennis Association

Williams won 22 doubles matches 6:42PM, Sep 28, 2000 African American Venus Williams added her second gold medal on Thursday, teamming up with sister Serena to win the tennis doubles title. The Williams sisters crushed Miriam Oremans and Kristie Boogert of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-1 in only 50-minutes. The Williams have now won their past 22 doubles matches, yet their Olympic partnership was in jeopardy for a time, with Serena's choice ahead of the higher-ranked Lisa Raymond challenged by the miffed world No.3.
Coach Billie Jean King had argued that the sisters were the better team, and this result, ending in the most one-sided tennis final in Olympic history, makes it hard to argue. One Williams is intimidating enough; facing two such powerful, exceptional athletes, must be demoralising indeed. The Williams sisters were asked to respond to JOHN McENROE's latest critique of them. In a British newspaper, McEnroe described the sisters as less than gracious in victory. "I don't think we are here to talk about that," SERENA WILLIAMS said. "I'm sure he's a great guy." . . . As their Olympic competition ended, Venus Williams's singles winning streak stood at 32; and the sisters had won 33 of 34 doubles matches. Putting her name down in history, Venus Williams also became the first woman to win gold medals in the singles and doubles since Helen Wills in 1924. Tennis rejoined the Olympic program only in 1988, after an absence of 56 years.

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

LONDON - From the grass courts of Wimbledon to the prime minister's neighborhood, the venues for the 2012 Olympics in London will provide a variety of backdrops - both traditional and new. The All England Club, annual site of Wimbledon, will be the setting for the Olympic tennis tournament when London hosts the 2012 Olympics. It's one of several London landmarks which will double as venues, along with a new 80,000-seat stadium in the East End suburb of Stratford. "It's the first time that the Olympic tennis event has been played on grass since 1920 Antwerp and the second time that the All England Club has hosted the event (1908)," International Tennis Federation president Francesco Ricci Bitti said. "We are confident that the 2012 Olympic tennis event will be outstanding."

ATHENS, Greece - Li Ting and Sun Tian Tian won China's first Olympic tennis medal ever by beating Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday for the doubles gold. The eighth-seeded Chinese pair hadn't won a title all year, and ended a four-match losing streak by eliminating 2000 gold medalist Venus Williams and Chanda Rubin in the opening round. In the final match of the Olympic tennis tournament later Sunday, unseeded Mardy Fish of the United States faced No. 10 Nicolas Massu for the men's singles gold. The doubles silver is Martinez's third Olympic medal - but none is gold. She paired with Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win the silver in 1992 and the bronze in 1996. Martinez and Ruano Pascual had played just one tournament together before the Olympics, yet they were seeded second.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA OLYMPIC HISTORY List of UF Olympians 2004 Olympians with UF ties
Official Website of the Athens 2004 Games
Few schools in the country can match the rich Olympic tradition the University of Florida boasts. As the Athens game approach, since 1968, 118 Gators and 11 Florida coaches have represented 27 countries in 10 Olympiads and laid claim to 76 medals, including 39 golds. 2004 was another banner outing for athletes and coaches with University of Florida ties, as 27 athletes and two coaches combined for seven medals - four gold, two silver and a bronze. Abby Wambach scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the gold medal match to lead the United States to victory, while Ryan Lochte led the United States to a victory in the 4x200-meter freestyle. Darian Townsend helped the South African squad set a world record in the 4x100-meter freestyle, while Lochte added a silver in the 200-meter individual medley, while on the track Bernard Williams took home silver in the 200-meter dash. The Olympic tradition for UF began in 1972 when track and field standout Ron Jourdan and swimmer Tim McKee exchanged the Orange and Blue of UF for the red, white and blue of the United States. Jourdan competed in the high jump, while McKee collected two silvers in Munich.

Kafelnikov takes gold, makes Russian history

SYDNEY, Australia Just three weeks ago Yevgeny Kafelnikov was not even sure he should be playing in the Olympic tennis tournament, never mind winning it. "I was thinking it's probably not worth it for me to come here the way I was playing then," Kafelnikov said in Sydney on Thursday after winning OLympic gold. Now, after beating Germany's Tommy Haas in a hard-fought final 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, he reflected on his mood in early September after losing to Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty in straight sets in the third round of the U.S. Open. "I was really down on myself after that loss and had all kind of thoughts, but I had never said to anyone that I'm pulling out." Nevertheless, his words in New York were interpreted quite differently in Moscow, bringing a storm of criticism back home from Russian Olympic chief Vitaly Smirnov as well as the media. "You can make millions of dollars or commute in a private jet, but when it comes to giving your best for your country, he takes a back seat to many of our true sports heroes," Smirnov said when he thought Kafelnikov was pulling out of the Olympics.

Trailblazers. Pioneers. Leaders. Breaking down barriers of race and gender, these 10 black female sports figures redefined the role of women in sports and laid the foundation for future generations. In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate their groundbreaking achievements and honor their contributions. Alice Coachman - Pioneer for black female athletes in all sports
Growing up in the segregated South during the 1920s and '30s, Alice Coachman was denied access to public facilities and forced to run barefoot in the streets. With the little opportunity she was given, Coachman took it and ran with it - literally. Overcoming racial segregation, Coachman went on to win 25 AAU track titles and numerous national championships at Tuskegee Institute, mostly in the long jump. However, her greatest achievement came in 1948 in London when she became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. By breaking the race barrier for women, Coachman opened the door for the future black female track stars, including some of the greats, like Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Dominique Dawes - Three-time Olympic medalist
As a young girl, Women's Sports Foundation President Dominique Dawes spent hours at the gym in order to achieve her dream of winning an Olympic medal. Her hard work paid off - big time. In 1988, she became the first African-American on the U.S. national gymnastics team, and in 1992, the first on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. In 1996, Dawes reached another milestone, winning an individual bronze medal in the floor exercises - the first black to earn an individual Olympic medal in women's gymnastics. She earned an Olympic gold medal the same year, as the U.S. women's gymnastics team won the team event in Atlanta. In a career of firsts, Dawes inspired a generation and set the stage for today's black gymnasts.

But Chinese girls are already aiming at the higher goal of Grand Slam events - and undergoing high-intensity training in Jiangmen, southern China's Guangdong Province, for next year's Australia Open. Li Ting and Sun Tiantian were virtually unknown before the Olympic Games, but this year pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history, seizing the first tennis gold for China from their powerful European and American counterparts. Big names were seen everywhere in Athens as thirteen of the world's top 20 women players entered the tournament, including Grand Slam winners Venus Williams, Martina Navratilova, Anastasia Myskina and Mary Pierce. But it was Li and Sun who belied all the pre-game forecasts by overpowering their first sensational rivals, the Williams/Chanda Rubin pair, to mark an unbelievable victory in their first Olympic match.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.
