tennis formed part of the inaugural modern olympic Games in 1896 and lasted until multiple Wimbledon champions and are legends in the history of tennis.
http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/tennis/tennishistory.html
OLYMPIC HISTORY Tennis formed part of the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896 and lasted until the 1924 Games in Paris. The trend for players to turn professional, a clash of dates with Wimbledon and arguments about the rulebook saw the sport drop out of the Games until 1984, when demonstration matches were played in Los Angeles. Tennis returned to the Olympic fold as an official sport in 1988, when professional players were allowed to take part. As such, the likes of Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver never had a chance to become Olympic champions, while the likes of Martina Navratilova were ruled ineligible by her own US federation because she did not wish to compete in the Federation Cup. Between 1896 and 1924, British players won 16 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals and, as such, will remain at the top of the historic tennis medal table for at least a couple more Games to come despite Britain's lowly rating in world tennis.

    Olympic Tennis Medalists
    History
Lawn tennis, as it was then known, was an Olympic sport from 1896 to 1924, although the women's singles and mixed doubles events were first played in 1900 and women's doubles wasn't added until 1920. In 1908 and 1912, there was competition both indoors and outdoors. The sport was dropped from the Olympics after 1924. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 and became a medal sport again in 1988. A single-elimination tournament determines medal placings. The top 16 players are seeded in singles, the top eight teams in doubles. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992, semfinal losers shared bronze medals. In all other years, they've had a playoff match for the medal. Top of page

Serena and Venus Williams won doubles gold for the USA in 2000 Tennis is among the most high-profile sports in the world with the leading players known internationally.
The sport was first played in England during the reign of King Henry VIII in the 16th Century, and was known as "real tennis". Stringed rackets and a set of rules were introduced towards the end of the century, and by the 19th Century the rise of the British Empire saw the game spread around the world. The first men's tournament took place at the All England Club, Wimbledon, in 1877, with the women joining seven years later, and tennis took its place in the Olympics in 1896. A dispute over the definition of amateurism led to the sport being withdrawn from the Games in 1928, and it is a subject that continues to cast a shadow over the relationship between tennis and the Olympics. Juan Antonio Samaranch, former president of the International Olympic Committee, was behind the drive to bring tennis back into the Olympic fold.
