The ABC’s of Immigration: M Visas for Vocational Students What is an M Visa? The M visa is available to international students who are coming to the US to pursue a full-time course of study at an established vocational school or other nonacademic school that has been approved by the USCIS. Typical institutions that accept M students include community and junior colleges that provide vocational and technical training, vocational high schools, and other schools that provide nonacademic training, other than English language instruction. The school must demonstrate that its international student program will fulfill educational objectives and will not be used as a means of making the students work. Students are designated M-1 and their spouses and children are M-2.
What is required to qualify for an M Visa?
The most basic requirement for a course of study to qualify for an M-1 visa is that it must lead to a specific educational or vocational objective. The student must engage in a full course of study, the definition of which depends on the type of institution.

Los Angeles, CA 90045 . . . or as attachments via e-mail: jemail("CCNews", "jiethics", "org"); Thanks! NORTHEAST TENNESSEE In May, a group of exceptional individuals received the 2005 Outstanding Character and Civic Responsibility Awards (cosponsored by the Youth Services Division of First Tennessee Human Resources Agency and Tusculum College). Each county in the region nominated individuals who exemplify all Six Pillars of Character and give selflessly to their communities. Of all the submissions, 18 received the Award. At Fairmont Elementary in Johnson City, Carrie Marchant director of the Youth Services Division and a CC! national faculty member has been meeting monthly with the kids for CHARACTER COUNTS!. Six Pillar activities have abounded and the students have fully participated. At the final session they made a flag using cutouts of their hands, with their own pictures as the stars. The flag was presented to Johnson City Vice-Mayor Dr. Phil Roe during the Youth Services' "Banking on Our Kids" Moral Kombat Heroes Celebration and Fundraiser. The flag is now on display at the mayor's office in Johnson City. Hancock County, one of the smaller rural counties in Tennessee, is proving itself a stronghold for CHARACTER COUNTS! and in fact has created a CC! Park that features a Six Pillar gazebo. Local vocational school students built the gazebo, with supplies donated by local businesses, and it was dedicated with the help of local children, business leaders, high school guidance counselor Janet Clonse, Carrie Marchant, and Ashley Eicher, the reigning Miss Tennessee.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

College-bound and Vocational Students Benefit from Career Guidance
Mention "career guidance" and "workplace readiness" to most educators today and they will most likely think of vocational studies or courses for students headed into the job market after graduation. But English teacher Priscilla Gregory of Vonore High School in Vonore, Tennessee, has a different response. While agreeing that vocational students benefit from guidance and work readiness, she strongly supports the same prescription for college-bound students. In fact, Priscilla believes that preparation for the world of work should be a part of everyone's school experience, beginning as early as the eighth grade. "Everyone is going to be in the workplace someday," she told us. "It's a fantasy to think that those who are going to college don't need these skills." Priscilla's beliefs come from her wide range of experience with students in both middle school and high school, vocational and academic tracks. In the past few years, she has taught Applied Communications to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade vocational students, regular English to college-bound seniors, and reading to eighth graders. In all of her classes, she includes a career guidance component as part of the basic language arts curriculum.
Guidance Helps Students Decide
In Tennessee, all high schools are required to offer two distinct pathways: college-bound or vocational. At Vonore High School, vocational students can choose from a rich array of Tech Prep offerings, or decide to "co-opt," leaving school to work part of the day for credit and pay. College-bound students regularly take the mainstay academic classes, preparing for college entry by fulfilling requirements.

  • Eligibility : The Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty), also known as Chapter 30, is a program of education benefits generally for individuals who enter active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985. Active duty for benefit purposes includes full-time National Guard duty performed after Nov. 29, 1989. The participant generally must serve continuously on active duty for three years of a three-year or greater initial enlistment or, for a lesser benefit, two years of an initial active-duty obligation of less than three years. An individual also may qualify for the full benefit by initially serving two continuous years on active duty, followed by four years of Selected Reserve service. In the latter case, the participant must enter the Selected Reserve within one year of release from active duty. The participant must meet the requirements for a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate before the first period of active duty ends. Completing 12 credit-hours toward a college degree meets this requirement.
