The Tennessee State Public School Song
My Tennessee
words and music by Frances Hannah Tranum
Adoption of State Public School Song
By Senate Resolution No. 36, approved on July 2, 1931, the Tennessee Senate, of the 67th General Assembly, adopted "My Tennessee" as an official state song. The resolution reads, in part, as follows. WHEREAS , Frances Hannah Tranum has written a song which has been set to music, which beautifully describes the landscape of our State and the spirit of our people, which song she has given the title, "My Tennessee," therefore Be it resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly That the song entitled "My Tennessee" written by Frances Hannah Tranum, be adopted as the State song for Tennessee. When the Tennessee Senate approved Resolution No. 36 in 1931, Tennessee already had one state song. " My Homeland, Tennessee " had been adopted as the first state song of Tennessee in 1926. Evidence in a 1933 telegram from Mrs. John Trotwood Moore, State Librarian and Archivist of the Division of Library and Archives, Nashville, suggests that "My Tennessee", as approved in 1931 was not really considered an official state song. In the telelgram, it is mentioned that a ruling of the Assistant Attorney General of the State is that the State song adopted first was still the official State Song of Tennessee. Perhaps this was because "My Tennessee" had only been adopted by the Senate? It appears that "My Tennessee" was not fully recognized as a state song, as of 1933, even though it had been officially adopted through a legislative act. This seems to have been resolved in 1935 when "My Tennessee was adopted by a Joint Resolution as the official

Bicentennial School Song
My Home Will Always Be in Tennessee
words by Terre Campbella-McCormick and Margaret Campbelle duGard and music by Shirley McRae
Adoption of Bicentennial School Song
Sponsored by the Tennessee Music Education Association, "My Home Will Always Be in Tennessee" was performed at their 50th annual convention. The words to the song were written by sisters, Teree Campbelle-McCormick, a teacher at W.O. Smith Community Music School, and Margaret Campbell-duGard, a composer and music educator at Nashville’s Park Avenue Elementary School. The music was composed by Shirley McRae, a University of Memphis music professor. 250 students from seven Nashville schools sang the song at the convention and were rewarded with great applause. The song became so popular that students from Vista/Jones Paideia Magnet School petetioned the General Assembly to declare "My Home will Always Be in Tennessee" the official bicentennial school song. The Middle Tennessee Children’s Choir performed "My Home Will Always Be In Tennessee" as part of Tennessee’s Bicentennial Celebration on June 1, 1996.

SUPREME COURT of TENNESSEE JOHN THOMAS SCOPES v. THE STATE
Nashville , December Term, 1926.)
Opinion filed January 17, 1927.
Appeal from the Criminal Court of Rhea County ; HON. J.T. RAULSTON, Judge.
JOHN R. NEAL, CLARENCE DARROW, ARTHUR G. HAYES, DUDLEY FIELD MALONE, WILLIAM T. THOMAS, and FRANK B. MCELWEE, for plaintiff in error. THOMAS H. MALONE and HENRY E. COLTON amici curiae for appellant. FRANK M. THOMPSON, Attorney-General, ED. T. SEAY, and K.T. MCCONNICO, for defendant in error. CHIEF JUSTICE GREEN delivered majority opinion; JUDGE CHAMBLISS concurring opinion, and JUSTICE COOK concurred; JUDGE COLIN P. MCKINNEY, opinion dissenting, and Judge SWIGGART did not participate. Scopes was convicted of a violation of chapter 27 of the Acts of 1925, for that he did teach in the public schools of Rhea county a certain theory that denied the story of the divine creation of man, as taught in the Bible, and did teach instead thereof that man had descended from a lower order of animals. After a verdict of guilty by the jury, the trial judge imposed a fine of $ 100, and Scopes brought the case to this court by an appeal in the nature of a writ of error. The bill of exceptions was not filed within the time fixed by the court below, and, upon motion of the state, at the last term, this bill of exceptions was stricken from the record.
