Notre Dame Information
Notre Dame High School is a Catholic high school under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Knoxville for young men and women grades 9 through 12. It was founded in 1876 by the Dominican Sisters of the St. Cecilia Community in Nashville at the request of the Reverend Patrick Ryan, then pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church.
Notre Dame is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It holds membership in the National Catholic Education Association, the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools, the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association.
While Notre Dame High School was established primarily for Catholic students, the school welcomes and provides for the admission of students of all religious beliefs and creeds. Approximately 30 % of Notre Dame students are non-Catholic. Notre Dame, following the example of Mary, mother of Jesus, for whom the school is named, maintains an atmosphere of acceptance and hospitality for all. CAMPUS The 20-acre campus is located in the Glenwood community at 2701 Vermont Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37404. Impact of No Child Left Behind on Tennessee Schools
  • Nearly half of schools could face sanctions. In Tennessee, 47 percent (711) of schools failed to meet federal standards for Adequate Yearly Progress - one of the highest percentages in the nation . If schools fail to improve they could face sanctions.
  • Unfunded mandate of $114 million. Tennessee schools have not been able to make the investments needed to meet the standards set by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Tennessee will receive $114 million less next year than it should have if NCLB was fully funded. That means approximately 123,727 Tennessee students won't have smaller class sizes; 15,677 students won't have pre-school; and 15,240 teachers won't be certified.
  • No preschool for thousands of new students.

Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute The world is to be carried forward by truth, which at first offends, which wins its way by degrees, which the many hate and would rejoice to crush. —William Ellery Channing, 1849 When we consider what religion is for mankind, and what science is, it is no exaggeration to say that the future course of history depends upon the decision of this generation as to the relations between them. —Alfred North Whitehead, 1930
    Introduction
Teachers in the New Haven high schools have used this unit in the Law Course offered to seniors, and to juniors taking United States History. I am aware of at least one ninth-grade teacher who has excerpted parts of this unit for use in teaching principles of the U.S. Constitution. Apparently, the materials contained here are readily adaptable for a variety of interest and ability levels. This teaching unit explores an issue which should be of great interest to both students and professional educators: intellectual freedom. What are the legal boundaries of what may and what may not be taught in public schools? What is the constitutional nature of this question? Besides educators, there are many individuals and groups which have input into the schools: students, parents, and local and state Boards of Education.

The State Board of Education is the governing and policy making body for the Tennessee system of public elementary and secondary education. Its work touches all facets of education from accountability and evaluation to curriculum and teacher education. The General Assembly created the current State Board of Education in 1984 when it adopted the Public Education Governance Reform Act. The legislation restructured the board, gave it increased independence, and expanded its duties. State Board of Education staff members provide ongoing policy research and analysis of public education issues including instruction, student assessment, and funding. The Board works closely with the Tennessee General Assembly to secure legislative support for education. The Board also coordinates its efforts with the State Department of Education, which implements law and policies established by the General Assembly and the Board. Through its annual report on student, teacher and school performance, the Board provides the legislature and the general public with information about the status of education in Tennessee.

The Coalition for Tennessee's Future believes... The Coalition believes that Tennessee must adequately fund public education now or face a declining standard of living and a state economy that's even worse than what we have now. Charter members of the Coalition pledged themselves to getting adequate and equitable state school funding so that all Tennessee public school children can have a quality education. But Tennessee's lawmakers have to act responsibly for that to happen. If those of us who value children finally speak with one voice to demand adequate funding, perhaps the General Assembly, and others running for public office, will listen.
