Department of Education 21st Century Schools Program Report Card Report Cards Provide Detailed Snapshot of Tennessee Public Schools Demographics -In 1997-98, Tennessee's 138 local school systems operated 1,575 schools that employed 61,653 professional personnel and served 890,805 students. Tennessee schools enrolled 6,705 more students and employed 3,905 more professional personnel in 1997-98 than in 1996-97. Tennessee's student population is 74% Caucasian, 24% African American, and 2% is made up of Asian, Hispanic, and American Indian students. Statewide, 19% of the students receive one or more special education services, 22% participate in Title I compensatory education programs, and about 41% receive free or reduced-price school meals. In 1997-98, schools served 8,484 students with limited proficiency in English. There were 1,022 students who attended adult high school programs offered by local school systems. School Accreditation -The percentage of Tennessee elementary schools accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) has increased from 39.8% in 1991-92, to 60.3% in 1997-98. The percentage of Tennessee secondary schools accredited by Southern Association increased from 48.5% in 1991-92 to 64.1% in 1997-98. There currently are 583 Tennessee elementary and middle schools that are SACS accredited. There will be 101 new elementary and middle schools joining during 1998, raising the number to 684 statewide. At present there are 368 secondary schools that are SACS accredited, with 12 new secondary schools joining during 1998 for a total of 380.

Anderson County Community Information General Information / Education / Medical / Cultural / Recreation Anderson County was originally a part of Knox County, which once extended all the way to the Kentucky border. But by 1801 there were enough people in the region above Copper Ridge and Poplar Creek to warrant the establishment of a new county, named Anderson for Judge Joseph Anderson. A county seat was decreed and built that year, near a popular spring and ford on the north side of the Clinch. The county suffered great turmoil and desolation during the Civil War years. But change came rapidly in the decades following the war. Agriculture resumed prospered. The Mining of coal in the mountains developed into a major industry. Life was hard, with long hours of toil and regular loss of life in cave-ins and other disasters. The coal industry has declined in recent years, but the sturdy descendents of these mineworkers, still living in the old communities, are a living heritage of this demanding way of life. The industry brought growth to Clinton. The railroad from Knoxville to the coal fields reached Clinton in 1869, it provided the town with uncommonly easy ingress and egress for what had been, still, an isolated area. There was general, steady commercial and industrial growth.

100th Anniversary of the Tennessee School for the Deaf A History of the School - : (Substantially Carr's History, with Modifications and Additions) : - Origin and Early History, 1844-1861 Establishment General John Cocke, a Senator of Grainger County, Tennessee, made history in December, 1843, by leaving his bed during an illness and going to the General Assembly in session in Nashville to plead for an appropriation of $2,000 to establish a school for the deaf. The Senate reduced the amount specified to $1,000 and sent it back to the House as an amendment to the bill ,to establish a school for the blind. The bill was passed by the House on January 29, 1844. In the spring of 1844, Governor James C. Jones appointed a board, which met on July 27, 1844, in the counting room of the firm of Cowan and Dickerson, to determine the first steps in establishing a school for the deaf. The board consisted of Messrs. R. B. McMullen, Joseph Estabrook, President of East Tennessee University, and Reverend D. R. McAnally. They wrote to the American Asylum in Hartford, Connecticut, to the New' York Institution in New York, anal to other schools, inquiring as to the steps necessary to proper organization of the school. They also sent a circular letter to the people of Tennessee requesting information in regard to the deaf of school age throughout the state. After a great deal of study and correspondence over a period of several months, the board got in touch with Reverend Thomas MacIntire, a highly recommended teacher from the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, and asked that he take charge of the school as principal and teacher. Mr. MacIntire wrote the board that he would accept the position and suggested that a deaf man from the school in Ohio, Mr. Charles Myers, come with him, at his expense, with the promise of a place in the school as soon as there was need for an assistant teacher. To this suggestion the board readily acquiesced.

TBR 210-013-00 1M FUNCTIONS OF THE MPA OFFICE MISSION The mission of the Office of Medical Professions Advisement is to provide information, academic advisement, and other support functions to students who wish to be admitted to professional schools in medically-related disciplines. Among those disciplines are medicine, osteopathic medicine, physician/surgeon assistant, podiatry, optometry, veterinary medicine, and chiropractic. The Director of the Office of Medical Professions Advisement is Dr. Lattie F. Collins. THE COMPETITIVE APPLICANT Most professional schools have many more applicants than can be accommodated in their classes. They select the best (in their judgment) of those applicants for admission to their programs. Thus admission to professional schools becomes a "competitive" process. Every year many students are unsuccessful in gaining admission to the professional school of their choice even though they meet the basic (minimum) requirements for admission. These students are not "unqualified," but they are not as "well-qualified" as other applicants-i.e., they are not as "competitive."

The total amount of vouchers issued will depend on the number of class members who claim vouchers, and the maximum value of the vouchers that may be issued to class members will total $64 million.
