A city in fact, which is less than a two-hour drive no less from five national parks, seven state parks, and seven lakes, where opportunities abound for outdoor recreation, scenic tours, and relaxation. Knoxville has been designated as a rapid growth area within the New South. Knoxville is the largest city in East Tennessee and ranks third largest in the state. Anderson County Community Information General Information / Education / Medical / Cultural / Recreation Anderson County was originally a part of Knox County, which once extended all the way to the Kentucky border. But by 1801 there were enough people in the region above Copper Ridge and Poplar Creek to warrant the establishment of a new county, named Anderson for Judge Joseph Anderson. A county seat was decreed and built that year, near a popular spring and ford on the north side of the Clinch. The county suffered great turmoil and desolation during the Civil War years. But change came rapidly in the decades following the war. Agriculture resumed prospered. The Mining of coal in the mountains developed into a major industry. Life was hard, with long hours of toil and regular loss of life in cave-ins and other disasters. The coal industry has declined in recent years, but the sturdy descendents of these mineworkers, still living in the old communities, are a living heritage of this demanding way of life. The industry brought growth to Clinton. The railroad from Knoxville to the coal fields reached Clinton in 1869, it provided the town with uncommonly easy ingress and egress for what had been, still, an isolated area. There was general, steady commercial and industrial growth.

General Information MCS Calendar 2005-2006

Students in Morgan County attend school for 180 days each school year. The year is divided into two semesters, each consisting of two 9-week grading periods. The school board approves a school calendar annually in the spring. Traditionally, schools start in early August in order to complete the first semester by Christmas. The second semester begins in January. The school year ends during the last week in May. A number of school days, designated as “snow days,” are built into the calendar. Development of the MCS Web Site
Students enrolled in Web Page Design at Wartburg Central High School have created and developed this web site. Working with school officials and Central Office staff, the students have experienced first hand the responsibility of organizing and managing a web site of this magnitude. Each student has taken an active role in making hundreds of decisions about the content, design, and structure of the site. Sections were shared and critiqued by the students prior to being submitted to the School Board and Central Office staff for approval. It is their desire that you will find the information contained in this web site to be relevant, accurate, and helpful.

Controversy Over Science in Sullivan County, Tennessee Schools
by Lewis Loflin Here are a collection of letters that appeared in the Kingsport Times-News over the suspension of a student for abusive proselytizing and harassment of a science teacher. The related stories are listed at the bottom of this presentation. This is just one of a series of school disruptions in this area over demands that religion (Evangelical Protestant version only) be forced into the public schools. Please be wary of the absurd fundamentalist definition of "love." This has nothing to do with how they treat people in this world, but only their belief in your "salvation" in an afterlife. When they say "Creationism" they mean biblical Genesis and a literal "six-day" creation, not theistic evolution or the belief of about 90% of evolutionists that God was responsible for both Creation and evolution. Otherwise, you follow and do as they say or else. It's about power and politics, not science or God.
Student went too far
Regarding the latest uproar over science in school and the student suspension in Sullivan County, it's not about science.

Origin and Early History, 1844-1861
Establishment
General John Cocke, a Senator of Grainger County, Tennessee, made history in December, 1843, by leaving his bed during an illness and going to the General Assembly in session in Nashville to plead for an appropriation of $2,000 to establish a school for the deaf. The Senate reduced the amount specified to $1,000 and sent it back to the House as an amendment to the bill ,to establish a school for the blind. The bill was passed by the House on January 29, 1844. In the spring of 1844, Governor James C. Jones appointed a board, which met on July 27, 1844, in the counting room of the firm of Cowan and Dickerson, to determine the first steps in establishing a school for the deaf. The board consisted of Messrs. R. B. McMullen, Joseph Estabrook, President of East Tennessee University, and Reverend D. R. McAnally. They wrote to the American Asylum in Hartford, Connecticut, to the New' York Institution in New York, anal to other schools, inquiring as to the steps necessary to proper organization of the school. They also sent a circular letter to the people of Tennessee requesting information in regard to the deaf of school age throughout the state. After a great deal of study and correspondence over a period of several months, the board got in touch with Reverend Thomas MacIntire, a highly recommended teacher from the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, and asked that he take charge of the school as principal and teacher. Mr. MacIntire wrote the board that he would accept the position and suggested that a deaf man from the school in Ohio, Mr. Charles Myers, come with him, at his expense, with the promise of a place in the school as soon as there was need for an assistant teacher. To this suggestion the board readily acquiesced.

Tennessee School for the Deaf, 1921-1945
From the time it was chartered, the school was known as the Tennessee Deaf and Dumb School. In the minds of the State of Tennessee, however, the institution was an asylum. The school was located on Asylum Street, not named officially because of the general opinion in regard to it. Often. in the Biennial Reports of the Board referred to it in this manner. For many years the gate at the entrance of the grounds had "Deaf and Dumb Asylum" written above it. This idea prevailed with little or no effort to correct it until Mrs. H. T. Poore's administration began. It was through her efforts at educating the public to the fact the deaf are not necessarily deaf and dumb that the an asylum for indigents was eradicated. During this a gradual change in the name to that of the Tennessee School for the Deaf was accomplished.

Among those disciplines are medicine, osteopathic medicine, physician/surgeon assistant, podiatry, optometry, veterinary medicine, and chiropractic. The Director of the Office of Medical Professions Advisement is Dr. Lattie F. Collins.
THE COMPETITIVE APPLICANT
Most professional schools have many more applicants than can be accommodated in their classes. They select the best (in their judgment) of those applicants for admission to their programs. Thus admission to professional schools becomes a "competitive" process. Every year many students are unsuccessful in gaining admission to the professional school of their choice even though they meet the basic (minimum) requirements for admission. These students are not "unqualified," but they are not as "well-qualified" as other applicants-i.e., they are not as "competitive."
