Dietitians are health professionals who apply the science and art of human nutrition to client needs. They help individuals and families of all ages, cultures, and economic means choose foods for adequate nutrition in health or disease throughout the life cycle. Dietitians also supervise the preparation and service of food to groups, develop modified diets, participate in nutrition research, and supervise the nutritional aspects of health care.
Dietitians may work in hospitals and other health care facilities or in private practice. They may work for government or community agencies, food industries, restaurants, schools, universities, the military, in communications, sales, or in a variety of other situations. As the public continues to recognize the dietetic professional as the true nutrition expert, demand for dietitians' services increases.
A registered dietitian is a professional who must have a college degree in nutrition, complete an internship or planned work experience, and pass a national examination to become registered. After becoming registered, the dietitian maintains continuing education requirements by attending workshops and lectures to keep nutrition knowledge up to date.

Clinical Dietetics and Research
The clinical dietitian, provider of nutrition services in health care settings, is a vital part of the medical team in hospitals, out-patient clinics, research laboratories, and private practice. A clinical dietitian assesses nutritional needs, provides dietary counseling as a member of the health care team, and acts as a resource person for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and other health professionals who have questions about nutrition.

About ADA ADA Journal Position Papers ... International
Nutrition services: An essential component of comprehensive school health programs Joint Position of ADA, Society for Nutrition Education, and American School Food Service Association Abstract
J Am Diet Assoc. 2003;103:505-514
Position statement It is the position of the American Dietetic Association, the Society for Nutrition Education, and the American School Food Service Association that comprehensive nutrition services must be provided to all of the nation's preschool through grade twelve students. These nutrition services shall be integrated with a coordinated, comprehensive school health program and implemented through a school nutrition policy. The policy should link comprehensive, sequential nutrition education; access to and promotion of child nutrition programs providing nutritious meals and snacks in the school environment; and family, community, and health services' partnerships supporting positive health outcomes for all children.
Environment The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the Society for Nutrition Education (SNE), and the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) recognize the importance of school-based nutrition services, including policies that link nutrition education, child nutrition programs, a healthy school environment, and community involvement promoting healthful eating and physical activity. Healthy People 2010 selected overweight and obesity as a leading health indicator of many preventable causes of death

    Testimony of
Jane V. White, PhD, RD, LDN
    President, American Dietetic Association
Mr. Chairman and members of the Committee, it is my pleasure to discuss nutrition and its importance for healthy aging in rural America. As president of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), I represent our nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals with nearly 70,000 members. We are dedicated to serving the public through the promotion of optimal nutritional health and well being. Our work is based on information drawn from peer-reviewed nutrition research and resources representing significant scientific consensus.
Healthy aging for all Americans requires adequate nutrition to maintain health, prevent chronic diet-related disease, and treat existing disease. However rural America offers some unique challenges due to distance, topography, and limited availability of the wide array of health care options that are present in more urban settings. Those seniors who routinely eat nutritious food and drink adequate amounts of fluids are less likely to have complications from chronic disease or to require care in a hospital, nursing home or other facility. Thus, it makes sense to emphasize nutrition screening for seniors in rural areas.
Isolated individuals frequently are more susceptible to poor control of chronic diet-related disease states due to difficulty in accessing available medical and/or nutritional care. Nutrition screening can identify seniors at increased risk for poor nutritional status and facilitate intervention to improve health.
