KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The University of Tennessee-Knoxville College of Arts and Sciences has received $500,000 for population studies, officials announced Monday. Dr. Carol Harden, head of UT-Knoxville's geography department, said a $250,000 gift from Knoxville's J. Harrison Livingston and his wife, Robbie, was matched by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation. Harden said an endowment established by the gifts will fund joint projects between university geographers and K-12 teachers in Tennessee. One planned project is a UT institute to help K-12 teachers learn how population growth affects the environment, Harden said. ''Geography once was considered a subject where students simply memorized names of places,'' Harden said. ''As teaching of contemporary geography has improved, it has become essential in the global marketplace. ''The Livingston gift helps us continue to improve geography education in Tennessee.'' Dr. Sidney Jumper, state geographer and UT-Knoxville professor emeritus, said the population studies will be directed by the Tennessee Geographic Alliance at UT, which he heads. The alliance was formed in 1986 as part of a National Geographic Society program to promote geography education.

TN The name Tennessee is derived from the name of a Cherokee village, Tanasi. In 1796, Tennessee was the first territory admitted as a state under the federal Constitution (16th state). Before statehood, it was known as the Territory South of the River Ohio. Tennessee is one of the states that link the North and the South. The lonely pioneer, wearing a coonskin cap and carrying a flintlock rifle, is a symbol of Tennessee's great past. Pioneers crossed the mountains of Tennessee to settle in the wilderness. They brought with them the spirit of independence and daring that has become a part of Tennessee's history. Tennessee's rugged mountains, thick forests and beautiful lakes and rivers are ideal for outdoor sports. The capital Nashville is known as a center for country music;

http://www.tnmilitary.org/MainPages/tn state flag.htm
Tennessee State Flag The Tennessee State Flag was designed by Captain LeRoy Reeves of the Third Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Captain Reeves explained the design of his flag as follows: The three stars are of pure white, representing the three grand divisions of the state. They are bound together by the endless circle of the blue field the symbol being three bound together in one-an indissoluble trinity The large field is crimson. The final blue bar relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag from showing too much creation when hanging limp. The white edgings contrast more strongly the other colors. This flag was adopted as the official flag of the State of Tennessee by an act of the Legislature passed and approved April 17, 1905. The design of the flag was described by that act, Chapter 498 of the Public Acts of 1905, as follows: An oblong flag or banner in length one and two thirds times its width, the large or principal field of same to be of color red, but said flag or banner ending at its free or outer end in a perpendicular bar of blue, of uniform width, running from side to side; that is to say, from top to bottom of said flag or banner, and separated from the red field by a narrow margin or stripe of white of uniform width; the width of the white stripe to be one-fifth that of the blue bar; and the total width of the bar and stripe together to be equal to one-eighth of the width of the flag. SYMBOLISM Those familiar with Tennessee's geography and politics have no trouble identifying the meaning of the three stars. Culturally and geologically, East, Middle, and West Tennessee are as different as any three state could be. Yet non-Tennesseans are often confused about the symbolism of the tri-star flag.

Habte Giorgis Churnet, The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Variation of Carbon isotopic ratios in carbonate deposits of the Chattanooga area is consistent with secular variation reported in the literature for the Paleozoic of other regions. Heavy oxygen isotope enrichment in Paleozoic chert nodules of the Chattanooga area is much lower than that determined in Cenozoic chert bearing carbonates elsewhere. In fact, the Mississippian carbonate host rock is slightly more enriched than the chert in the Fort Payne Formation, ...

Location
The Sequatchie Valley in southeastern Tennessee (and Browns Valley in northeastern Alabama) is one of the most recognizable non-coastal landforms in the eastern United States. The valley looks almost like a knife incision when viewed on a topographic map. If you visit, you'll notice that the valley is very striking in appearance, with quite steep escarpments leading to a fairly narrow (generally less than five miles across) and flat valley floor. This illustration created by Scott Kuntzelman from an original image by David Hastings of the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center using GLOBE (Global Land One-kilometer Base Elevation) data. The original image was downloaded from the NGDC FTP site I've included an illustration to put the area in geographic and spatial perspective.

Center for Historic Preservation On the wall above a stairway in the west wing of our nation's Capitol there is a mural that captures a definitive moment in America's history and vision of itself. Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way, painted by Emanuel Leutze in 1861-62, is equally appropriate in reflecting the history and meaning of Tennessee.
The mural is a quintessential representation of the nation's popular belief summarized in 1845 as "our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allocated by Providence." It departs from the Capitol's previous grandiose paintings and sculptures depicting European discovery of the "New World" and incorporates no heroic figures of founding fathers or well-draped goddesses brandishing swords of liberty and laurel wreaths of peace. Here, instead, is a searching, exultant scene of Americans fulfilling the rite of passage to claim the great West. Afoot, on horseback, in covered wagons drawn by plodding oxen, these weary and hopeful pioneers have toiled across the plains and up the rugged mountains to reach a pass opening toward California's distant Golden Gate.
