Digital Humanities Program Partners
A digital historical and cultural encyclopedia and atlas of Tennessee, as we conceive it, is only feasible if it is developed, maintained, and owned by an extensive network of cultural organizations throughout the state. Our partners for this pilot project are the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee the Tennessee Geographic Alliance the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association , and seven small museums and other cultural agencies in the three-county pilot area. We also intend to involve several state, regional and national organizations through our project committees, and will be integrating this project with a project called Volunteer Voices which seeks to provide online access to Tennessee's culture and history and is Phase II of the Tennessee Electronic Library and a project of TENN-SHARE, a consortium of 300 Tennessee libraries. Our principal and coordinating partner will be the award-winning Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association , a community-based agency primarily supported by McMinn, Monroe, and Polk County governments, whose purpose is to promote and preserve the natural and cultural resources of these counties through a heritage tourism program that increases visitation, serves as an educational tool, and acts as a catalyst for economic development. The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association will be a contributing partner (i.e., will contribute narratives to the atlas) and has on-going working relationships with the other potential contributing partners throughout the three counties. Most of these organizations also have long-term relationships with Humanities Tennessee in projects involving the gathering, compiling, authenticating, analyzing and sustaining of narratives about their place.

The state has three sharply defined regions: East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee. In East Tennessee the Great Smoky Mts., Cumberland Plateau, and the narrow river valleys and heavily forested foothills generally restrict farming there to the subsistence level; but this region has two of the state's most industrialized cities, Chattanooga (fourth largest) and Knoxville (third largest). Middle Tennessee is hemmed in by the Tennessee River, which flows SW through East Tennessee into Alabama, looping back up into West Tennessee in its circuitous route to the Ohio. Gently rolling, fertile, bluegrass country, it is ideal for livestock raising and dairy farming. Middle Tennessee is still noted for its fine horses and mules, e.g., the Tennessee walking horse. Twenty-three state parks, covering some 132,000 acres (53,420 hectares) as well as parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee National Forest, and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park are in Tennessee. Sportsmen and visitors are attracted to Reelfoot Lake, originally formed by an earthquake; stumps and other remains of a once dense forest, together with the lotus bed covering the shallow waters, give the lake an eerie beauty.

Introduction
Task ... Conclusion
Countries of Europe Introduction
For centuries Europe has been the heart of the world. European empires spanned the globe and transformed lives near and far. How and why was this possible? Globally, Europe's relative location at the heart of the land hemisphere is one of maximum efficiency for contact with the rest of the world. No where in Europe is more than three hundred miles from the sea. No place in Europe is very far from any other place on the continent. These geographic advantages enabled Europe to develop, as no other area has been able to do. Western Europe is composed of eighteen countries. These include the large countries of Germany and France ; the low countries of Belgium , the Netherlands , and Luxembourg ; the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland ; the British Isles which include Ireland and the United Kingdom ; Norden or Northern Europe which is comprised of Denmark Finland Norway Sweden , and Iceland , and Mediterranean Europe which consists of Greece Italy Portugal , and Spain . This area is a mosaic of landforms, climates, cultures, traditions, and history. From the rugged peaks of the Scandinavian peninsula to the flat vineyards of Spain, Western Europe is a jigsaw puzzle of many, varied pieces. In order to understand the complexity of this region, we will examine each country, in depth.
