Borders Tennessee is bordered by Kentucky and Virginia on the north and by North Carolina Georgia Alabama , and Mississippi , on the south. On the east, Tennessee is bordered by North Carolina . On the west, Tennessee is bordered by Missouri and Arkansas Total Area Tennessee covers 42,146 square miles, making it the 36th largest of the 50 states Land Area 41,220 square miles of Tennessee are land areas. Water Area 926 square miles of Tennessee are covered by water. Highest Point The highest point in Tennessee is Clingman's Dome at 6,643 feet above sea level. Lowest Point The lowest point in Tennessee is 178 feet at the Mississippi River. Mean Elevation The Mean Elevation of the state of Tennessee is 900 feet above sea level.     • Museum Store Museum Participates in Family-Friendly Summer Promotion
      Tennessee State Museum along with 15 other Nashville area cultural and historic institutions are preparing for the second-annual summer collaboration in a family-friendly program designed to encourage local residents to "take a family vacation in your own backyard."
      The program, entitled Summer Passport to Fun, is a child-friendly publication that provides information about the region's diverse cultural organizations, their special programs and admission fees. As families "travel to" the different sites, their passports will be stamped, marking another stop in exploring the local cultural and historic riches of Middle Tennessee.
      Passports will be distributed beginning in May to all Metro Public School students, grades kindergarten through fourth. The passports will also be available free-of-charge through Metro art teachers and media specialists, as well as participating organizations.
      The dates and activities for the State Museum’s Passport programs are:
      • Friday, June 10, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Tennessee Flag Day, History of the flag, games, trivia and much more
