Tellers Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Abundant wildlife is not the only reason this is the most visited national park in the country. Up high, you can look out upon an endless panorama of majestic mountains. Down below, in the wooded foothills, you can visit the remnants of pioneer settlements: log cabins, one-room schoolhouses, blacksmith shops, and gristmills. Families can hike to hidden waterfalls, picnic next to rushing streams, fish in clear waters, ride horses along mountain trails, bicycle through a restored pioneer village, watch a miller at work, jump from rock to rock across a creek, run through thousands of wildflowers and listen to park rangers tell stories around a campfire.
VISITOR INFORMATION
The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day. Admittance to the park is free. From the North Carolina side of the park, the major entrance is 3 miles north of Cherokee. Oconaluftee Visitor Center is just inside the entrance. Open year-round except for Christmas Day, it has pioneer exhibits and demonstrations as well as general information.
The major entrance point from the north is Sugarlands Visitor Center, near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Open all year, the center has an orientation film and natural history exhibits.

A trained Parent Advisor visits each family on a weekly basis for a one-hour session. The Parent Advisor assesses the goals and needs for the family and tailors a program designed to achieve these goals. Because families have varied needs, the TIPS program is unique to each family. TIPS serves children with hearing and vision impairment as well as children with multiple disabilities. TIPS also serves children with developmental delays or medical conditions. There are currently over 600 Parent Advisors that serve over 5,000 special needs children throughout the state of Tennessee.
Qualifying For TIPS This service is provided free to families, and is offered by the Tennessee Department of Education. Participation in the program is completely voluntary and is offered to children from birth to three who reside in the State of Tennessee and meet the state definition of developmental delays. Instructional Programs A trained Parent Advisor visits the home once a week to train and give support to the parents. The TIPS Parent Advisor uses the SKI*HI curriculum, which is described below:

Tennessee Valley Authority
  • The Tennessee Valley, drained by the Tennessee River and its tributaries, is an area of approximately 41,000 square miles, including parts of seven States - Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. The major portion of the valley lies in Tennessee. The Tennessee Valley Authority was created by Congress in 1933 to develop the Tennessee River system in the interest of navigation, flood control, and national defense, and to generate and sell surplus electricity to avert waste of water power. Properties in the vicinity of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, were transferred to the Authority. TVA's integrated water control program requires not alone the proper use of water resources, but, of necessity, the conservation and preservation of the land resources of the region.
  • The TVA is an independent Government corporation managed by a board of directors. Its activities are directed from headquarters at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, though administrative offices have been set up elsewhere as needed. A contact office, with a small staff, is maintained in Washington, D. C.
  • The Muscle Shoals project in Alabama, with the Wilson Dam and power house, and the two nitrate plants, was begun as a war measure under the National Defense Act of 1916. Actual construction, however, did not start until late in 1918, and the war was over before the project could be carried out. The problem of what to do with this wartime investment remained unsolved until the project was incorporated into the general program of the TVA.

    Background
In the past year, Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (the Clerc Center) at Gallaudet University has identified, through a process of public feedback, including interviews with various constituencies, a National Dialogue, and the National Mission Advisory Panel, significant needs in the area of Family Involvement for families and their deaf or hard of hearing children. These needs were reflected in three Request for Collaboration (RFC) topics which were widely distributed throughout the United States and its territories. The three RFC topics targeted traditionally underserved families: those who do not speak English, are members of a minority group, live in rural areas, or have deaf or hard of hearing children with additional disabilities or low academic achievement. RFC-1 was a request for research studies on about how parents/guardians from traditionally underserved groups obtain and utilize information about educational options for their deaf or hard of hearing children.

History of Families First The Families First program began in September 1996 under a waiver from the Federal government. Our waiver allows us to offer programs that are different from the reform legislation at the national level. Families First, like "welfare" programs in all the states, provides a cash benefit with supportive services to families with children who are experiencing financial difficulties. Many of the basic eligibility requirements of the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program have remained, but the program is distinct in many important ways.
Families First is Tennessee's welfare reform plan which replaced the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The temporary cash assistance program emphasizes work, training, and personal responsibility. As part of the Families First program, each participant must agree to follow a Personal Responsibility Plan (PRP).

CHAPTER 9 Integration with other Adult Education and Training Activities Section 224 (b) (11) of the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act states: Describe how the adult education and literacy activities will be carried out with any funds received under this subtitle, and how they will integrate with other adult education, career development, and employment and training activities in the State or outlying area served by the eligible agency.
9.0 Integration with other Adult Education and Training Activities (Section 224 (b) (11)) Description of Planned Integrated Activities Tennessee adult education and literacy activities are and will continue to be integrated with other career development, education, and employment and training activities at the State and local levels. This integration is accomplished by the coordination of State level policies and plans, interagency agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), feedback and guidance from providers and stakeholders, collaborative planning, data sharing and matching, joint efforts to leverage resources, and the encouragement of local level integration through funding application processes. The following table highlights many of the mechanisms for interagency coordination and integration of adult education activities, but it should not be considered an exhaustive list. The Office of Adult Education recognizes the significance of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) legislation for enhancing the facilitation and coordination of the Office's adult education, literacy, and workforce development activities with those of other agencies, institutions, and organizations within the state. The Office Of Adult Education will continue to partner with other state agencies in shaping programs for educating adult learners, preparing an effective workforce, and holding adult education and workforce preparation programs accountable for results. Readily apparent advantages of continuing and improving upon interagency communication and collaboration include infrastructure development and the assurance of non-duplication of services, as well as cost-effective delivery.

Farmers to be offered lump-sum settlements in tobacco buyout
The Tennessee Farm Bureau and other tobacco state Farm Bureau’s are teaming with Farm Bureau Bank to offer lump-sum settlements to farmer participants in the tobacco buyout.
Tennessee Farm Bureau President Flavius Barker has announced that the financial service is being made available to all tobacco growers and allotment holders through participating county Farm Bureau offices across the state.
The Farm Bureau settlement plan will allow buyout recipients to be paid a lump sum utilizing the USDA “successor in interest” agreement. The lump-sum settlement program is available for the remaining nine payments tobacco producers will receive. The first payment is being made currently.
Barker said full details of the program would be announced as soon as relevant information and documents are available from the Farm Service Agency, which will administer the buyout program.
“The settlement program we are offering will be competitive with other plans being offered,” Barker said. Barker added: “The handling of tobacco buyout payments will be a very important financial transaction for many families, providing money to operate and expand farms for some, pay down debt or expenses, begin a new business venture to replace the tobacco production, and retirement funds for others. We want to do everything possible to assist Tennesseans as they plan to receive and invest these dollars.”
