The State Board of Education is the governing and policy making body for the Tennessee system of public elementary and secondary education. Its work touches all facets of education from accountability and evaluation to curriculum and teacher education. The General Assembly created the current State Board of Education in 1984 when it adopted the Public Education Governance Reform Act. The legislation restructured the board, gave it increased independence, and expanded its duties. State Board of Education staff members provide ongoing policy research and analysis of public education issues including instruction, student assessment, and funding. The Board works closely with the Tennessee General Assembly to secure legislative support for education. The Board also coordinates its efforts with the State Department of Education, which implements law and policies established by the General Assembly and the Board. Through its annual report on student, teacher and school performance, the Board provides the legislature and the general public with information about the status of education in Tennessee.

The Board of Dentistry was created in 1957 by the State Legislature. Its mission is to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of Tennesseans by requiring those who practice as dentists, dental hygienists, or dental assistants within this state be qualified. The Board interprets the laws, rules, and regulations to determine the appropriate standards of practice in an effort to ensure the highest degree of professional conduct. The Board is authorized to issue licenses to qualified candidates who have completed appropriate education and successfully completed required examinations. The Board is responsible for the investigation of alleged violations of the Practice Act and rules and is responsible for the discipline of licensees who are found guilty of such violations. The administrative staff of the Division of Health Related Boards supports the Board by issuing licenses to those who meet the requirements of the law and rules. Renewal notices are mailed from Board’s administrative office 45 days prior to the expiration of the license to the current address on record. Licensees are responsible for reviewing their license on time and keeping the Board apprised of current information. Licenses can be renewed on-line 120 days prior to expiration at T ennessee.gov

Ten Questions on IDEA
Background
In 1975 Congress passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) guaranteeing the right of all handicapped children to a public school education. This act’s name changed to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990. It has been amended numerous times since its original passage, most significantly as part of its "reauthorization" in 1997. The "reauthorization" included considerable changes relating to the discipline of special education students. This brief Q&A addresses discipline matters under the IDEA. Given regulatory changes and evolving case law, nothing in this document is intended to be the provision of legal advice.
1. Are students with disabilities subject to different standards when it comes to discipline?
2. What are the procedural requirements for a school system suspending a disabled student from school?
