K-12 Networking - State of Tennessee
The following message concerns K-12 networking in the State of Tennessee. Forwarding or cross-posting of this message is welcomed, provided the content is left intact. This does not represent an official statement by the State of Tennessee, and any errors or omissions are my own. I must acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the COSNDISC participants and other state Education officials in our planning process in Tennessee: we've sought the benefit of others' experience in K-12 networking and you have been most helpful to us. The Tennessee State Department of Education presented its recommendations for the Tennessee Education Network (TEN) and 21st Century Classroom initiatives to the State's Information Systems Council (ISC) on December 16, 1993. Part of that presentation was the recommended TEN telecommunications approach. That segment of the presentation is reproduced in outline form below. The ISC gave their support to this approach, and Tennessee will be implementing the TEN - including Internet access to every school - in 1994.

by Norman Pickell When parents, for whatever reason, decide to live apart, the financial suffering of their children should be kept to a minimum. Both parents should be doing what is best for their children. Surely no one would disagree with the principle that both parents have a financial obligation to support their children. However, the amount of child support that the non-custodial parent pays to the custodial parent is often the subject of a battle in court.
Most jurisdictions now have some form of child support guidelines. But that has not stopped the battles between parents - both on original applications for child support and on variations of the amount of child support !
Whether the battle between Mom and Dad continues until a Judge sets the amount after a court hearing, or whether the parents settle on the doorsteps of the court house, the end of the battle is often preceded by arguing and blaming. Sometimes one parent threatens to apply for custody as a bargaining tool in the negotiations over the amount of child support to be paid.
In Ontario and Canada, there are what we call "Table Amounts" for child support. These amounts depend solely on the payor's income and the number of children to be supported. For example, based on the latest Tables, if there are three children and the payor has an annual income of $ 20,000.00, the Table Amount of child support to be paid in Ontario is $ 390.00 monthly tax-free. On the other hand, if the payor's annual income is $ 40,000.00, the Table Amount increases to $ 748.00.

Many parents and teachers of blind children (see "Who Is Blind") have difficulty in locating accurate information, resources and services, and often lack contact with people who understand their particular struggles, challenges, discouragements and triumphs. Here we have contact information for helpful resources and have assembled some material that may be useful. Also, every child is an individual and often what is needed to meet the unique needs of a particular child and/or situation is some creative thinking, problem solving and new ideas. One of our chapter members, herself blind, is a special education teacher, trained in teaching the blind and who has worked extensively with blind children ages birth to 18. Blind children need blind, adult role models and benefit greatly from positive time spent with them. The sparse availability of legal representation for students is overwhelmed by the growing need for access to legal advocacy on behalf of this disempowered population. LEARN will seek to address this imbalance. The legal services programs that handle education cases acknowledge the need for a project that will educate more lawyers about the field, adequately support the handful of private lawyers who currently handle education cases, and cultivate new resources from the relevant professional communities to serve at- risk students.
The College, located in Knoxville, is uniquely situated to serve both urban and rural areas. Knoxville is located in a metropolitan area of over 600,000; yet surrounding the metro area and only a short distance away lies a large number of small rural counties. LEARN will not only support litigation and administrative dispute resolution, but also will stimulate community legal education and the organization of effective groups of students and parents. Initially, the project will create an advisory panel composed of lawyers, lay advocates, students, and professionals. This panel will assist the project in targeting opportunities to strengthen the voices and influence of parents and students in confronting the hardships stemming from lack of equal educational opportunities. This work will complement the legal work performed by the lawyer members of LEARN and will assure that the Project in a collaborative way that helps to develop non-lawyer leadership.

ABA Resources for Recovery from Autism/PDD/Hyperlexia
I am the father of a school-age child who has autism. This is a collection of Internet and other resources which parents of children with PDD PDD-NOS autism Asperger's Syndrome , or hyperlexia may find useful. All the information concerns teaching methods that are a branch of applied behavior analysis (ABA) called behavioral intervention . One of the methods is discrete trial training . Some (inaccurately) use the term " Lovaas method." We worked hard to get complete information, implement a program, and have our school system pay for it. My hope is to help spare other parents (and their children) some of the pain and wasted time we went through. Here are all the helpful resources I've found, with the best places to start marked . The essentials of starting a program for your child are marked to . Please also see the frequently asked questions about ABA and autism . For information on training or employment see the education and employment listings Why don't the links work?
