Children's Rehab Center Offers Special Care for Special Children A home with people who care. A fun place to play. An inviting learning environment. Friends to help you do your best. These are things that every child needs. And for a child with special needs, these take on even more significance. At the Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Center, located at Pellissippi Parkway and Westland Drive off I-140 in West Knoxville, these elements and much more are part of the daily “routine” for children with a variety of special needs. The Rehab Center’s services
A department of Children’s Hospital, the Rehabilitation Center provides physician-directed rehabilitation services to nearly 1,500 area children each year and has been serving the East Tennessee region’s special needs children since 1947. The Rehabilitation Center understands a child's rehabilitation needs are different from an adult's, and every aspect of our services and program focuses on those unique needs. The center’s pediatric specialists in speech pathology, occupational and physical therapy, nursing, nutrition, clinical psychology and social work provide comprehensive family-focused evaluation, treatment and programming. The goal of all center programs is to work with children and their families so that potentials are developed and quality of life improved. All Rehabilitation Center programs and services reflect a philosophy of care that offers a commitment to the whole child, recognizing his or her unique combination of characteristics and needs. The family-focused environment promotes parent participation to integrate therapy goals into daily life. The center strives to help each

ATTENTION PARENTS:
The following identifiers are for your use as a guidline only. Exercise caution in assuming that your child is involved in gang activity if one or more of the sighns are present. If one or more signs are present, communications with the child are crucial in determing the level, if any, of the child's involvement.
WARNING SIGNS You should be concerned if your child:
    (1) admits to gang involvement; (2) is obsessed with one particular color of clothing or shows a desire for a particular logo over and over; (3) wears sagging pants (this in and of itself is not indicative of gang activity); (4) wears excessive jewelry with distinctive designs and may wear it only on either the right or left side of the body; (5) is obsessed with gangster-influenced music, videos and movies to the point of imitation; (6) withdraws from family with an accompanying change in demeanor;

Welcome About Us Calendar of Events Getting Started Studying Abroad ... mtsu directory Parent Information Advice for Parents of Overseas-Bound College Students
by Bill Hoffa The idea of traveling to other countries as part of one's higher education is nothing new. Scholars have been enriching their higher education through travel for centuries. What is different today is that study abroad is no longer a luxury for the rich, but instead, a reality for students who want to become prepared for the challenges of the twenty-first century. As a parent of a college or college-bound student, you may find yourself in the role of helping your child think through the many questions and issues she will face in making this often life-changing decision. Though decisions about when, where, and what to study overseas are usually made by students themselves, there are many supporting roles for parents to play to help their child in deciding whether to go, choosing a program, preparing for departure, ensuring a rewarding experience while abroad, and adjusting to life back at home.
Here are some important considerations about choosing a program, determining when to go, and preparing to get the most out of the experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Home Schooling
    From the Tennessee Department of Education. Question:
    "What about special education students whose parents decide to teach them at home? Does the school system have an obligation to provide special education services, such as an M-Team, I.E.P., etc.?" Answer:
    The state law for the Education of Handicapped Children provides that school systems must screen all children within their boundaries for handicapping conditions. [T.C.A. 49-10-108]. "Under the Education of the Handicapped Act, Part B, Federal funds are provided for services to to handicapped students in public and private schools. Private schools are notified that handicapped students are eligible to participate in programs and projects carried out with Part B funds and may come to the public schools to participate in these services if they qualify. Home school students who are handicapped and qualify should be treated the same as handicapped private school students who qualify for services." Vision and Hearing: Evaluations and Consultation
    "The Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville (TSD) and the Tennessee School for The Blind in Nashville (TSB) are making resources, personnel expertise, and facilities available to assist local school systems in evaluating students with complex or severe hearing and/or vision disabilities. Evaluation and consultation services are available for LEAs that lack appropriate specialists to provide adequate evaluations and/or that require assistance in providing appropriate intervention."
