Undergraduate General Education Teaching
The lecture is certainly a common format for many general education classes and the College is fortunate to have many engaging lecturers. Many English, languages and mathematics classes have 20 to 25 students, whereas some classes in the social and natural sciences at the introductory level may have a few hundred students. Several departments in the College also maintain tutorial centers to help students learn, and students are encouraged to seek this help as needed. Also, many classes have discussion, seminar or laboratory sections where students with graduate student leaders focus on key course topics, concepts and skills. This section illustrates some of these settings. Highlights Revised: 7/12/2004

MEASURING THE QUALITY OF YOUR EDUCATION
Educational quality has become an important issue in Tennessee and across the nation. To evaluate the quality of education in all state higher education institutions, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission instituted the performance-based funding formula in which a portion of each institution’s annual instructional budget is awarded according to six criteria. One criterion is student achievement in general education as measured by the College BASE test. Another is student achievement as measured by a test in the major field.
