The "extrasolar planet" is said to orbit a star called GQ Lup - thought to be like a young version of our Sun. Similar claims have been made in the past, but sceptical scientists believe the pictures merely show objects that share the same view in the sky. GQ Lup and its companion are located in a star-forming region about 400 light-years away. The "planet" has been observed by the team since 1999. The astronomers have used image data from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Japanese Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. Because it is in a young system, the planet is said to be relatively hot. This helped the team detect the planet in the glare from its host star, the group says. The planet is also quite far from GQ Lup - about 100 times the distance between the Sun and the Earth, which assisted the team in separating the light from the two objects.

Photos and descriptions of binocular stand, several telescopes, solar camera, and links for parts.
http://www.mdpub.com/scopeworks/
Welcome to Mike's Telescope Workshop
Astronomical instruments from the workshop of Michael Davis I have been involved in amateur telescope making (ATM) for nearly 20 years. In that time I have built many different telescopes and other instruments. This web page chronicles just a few of them. ATM is a great and very rewarding hobby. You can build a better telescope than you can buy. After you build your first telescope you'll never buy another mass-produced scope. You'll be hooked for life. Click on the photos for more information on the various projects. The Projects This is a quick and easy binocular stand I whipped together out of found materials and my photographic tripod. It adjusts so it can be used while sitting or standing. Anyone can easily make one like it. Click on the photo for more information.
This is the "Cookie Jar" telescope. It is an 8in. f/4.5 Newtonian scope on a ball mounting. The truss design reduces the weight of the upper section and helps keep the center of gravity low. The short focal length keeps the eyepiece low to the ground even at zenith, making the Cookie Jar a very "kid friendly" telescope. The ball mounting allows smooth movement in azimuth, altitude and rotation. Click on the photo for more information.

Inventions: Telescopes

A telescope is a device that lets us view distant objects. Early telescopes (and most today) used glass lenses and/or mirrors to detect visible light. Some modern telescopes gather images from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays. Most telescopes are located on Earth, but others are in space.
Refracting Telescopes
The first refracting telescope was invented by Hans Lippershey in 1608. Lippershey (1570?-1619) was a German-born Dutch lens maker who demonstrated the first refracting telescope in 1608, made from two lenses; he applied for a patent for this optical refracting telescope (using 2 lenses) in 1608, intending it for use as a military device. In 1609, Galileo was the first person to use a telescope to observe the skies (after hearing about Hans Lippershey's newly-invented telescope). Galileo discovered the rings of Saturn (1610), was the first person to see the

152. Weasner's Mighty ETX Site
Resources, discussions and complete information about Meade ETX Astro telescopes.
http://www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html
In September 1996 I purchased a Meade ETX Astro Telescope. I soon discovered that there was not a lot of information available on the Web regarding the ETX so at the end of that month I put up a web page with some personal comments and photos. Since that initial web page over eight years ago (!), this site has grown dramatically with contributions from ETX and DS users worldwide. ETX and DS user comments, technical tips, accessory reviews, or links to other ETX and DS web sites are greatly appreciated. Please send them to Mike Weasner . Accessory reviews should include the accessory name, the manufacturer, model, price, and a description. For accessory reviews or technical tips, including a digital photo is helpful. Astrophotos taken with the ETX or DS models can also be sent and will be posted on the Guest Astrophotography Gallery or the Helpful Information - Astrophotography pages. Thanks for your help.
