Latest News: Swarovski EL 8x32s (left) finally face serious competition. In December 2004, Zeiss introduced the Victory 32 FL binoculars (right), perhaps the ultimate bins for world birders. ( Zeiss press release .) The Victory 32FLs are lighter than the Swarovski 32ELs, with comparable close focus and longer eye relief, especially in the 10x32FL. In November 2004, Leica introduced the Ultravid 32s, one of which (8x32) is even lighter than the comparable Zeiss 8x32FL, but which lack the long eye relief of the Zeiss and Swarovski 32s. If you're considering new binoculars, there are more interesting options than ever before. The following table summarizes significant features of the cream of the current crop and includes deep links to the manufacturers' specification pages and to Binoculars.com, an online dealer. Binoculars may vary significantly from the published specs. Thus, for example, Twentse Vogelwerkgroep , a site with detailed binoculars reviews, measured close focus of on Leica 10x42BR Ultravids and just on Swarovski 8x32 ELs.

The UK Astronomical Data Centre
Welcome to the home page of the UK Astronomy Data Centre (formerly RGO Astronomy Data Centre). The Data Centre is part of the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit in the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, and houses a good selection of data from the UK's ground based telescopes as well as a number of catalogues. The user interfaces for the catalogues presented here are all very similar, so once you've queried one catalogue then all of the rest should be pretty much the same. The interface owes much to software developed at the CADC (Canadian Astronomy Data Centre) and we gratefully acknowledge our debt to them in allowing us to adapt their software to our needs. We currently serve the following archives and catalogues.
VizieR service
The ADC operates a mirror of the VizieR service VizieR is a "catalogue of catalogues" or "data-set federation". It allows users to browse lists and descriptions of available catalogues and to submit a query, typically by object name or position, on many catalogues at once.

134. Telescope
Some telescopes have another set of lenses that turn the image upright. The lenses used in refracting telescopes are called concave and convex.

How Does That Work?
The Telescope: A Bit of History
In 1608, a Dutch eyeglass maker named Hans Lippershey looked at a church steeple through two lenses placed one in front of the other and saw that the image was magnified. Unfortunately the telescopes built on Lippershey's model had poor image quality, caused by the bending of light though the glass lenses. (Glass does not bend the different colors of light equally. Red light is bent the least causing a colour distortion in the image.) Isaac Newton eventually solved this problem in 1668 by making a telescope that worked with mirrors instead of lenses.
Galileo Galilei was the first person to use the telescope to seriously study the heavens. Galileo was able to see that the moon was not smooth, but covered with huge valleys and craters. He discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter and found out that Venus has phases just like the moon. He realized that this must mean that Venus, and the other planets, revolve around the sun not around the earth, as many people believed at the time. In 1610 Galileo published a book about what he had seen through his telescope. Starry Messenger became the seventeenth-century equivalent of a bestseller. Not bad!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO APOW (AND ME)
May, 2001
It's hard to believe but I have been doing this Astrophoto of the Week for 5 years as of this week and only missed one week during all that time. It's even harder to believe that I just filed for Social Security and turned 62 this week.
Believe it or not, I have been taking astrophotos off and on for most of those years. My very first successful astrophoto was taken of the Big Dipper with a box camera on a tripod. What's even more amazing is that I still have this negative. I was about 10 years old at the time. My first astrophoto through a telescope was of Vega, made by holding the camera to the eyepiece of a 3" reflector made from a kit purchased from Edmound. The kit consisted of a 3" mirror, diagonal, paper tube and instructions. I still have that negative also, which shows just one star and lots of fingerprints from fondling this trophy for hours on end. I was about 11 at that time. The next step up was to actually build my own 4 1/4" reflector, including grinding and figuring the mirror. I was 13 at this time and managed to take a picture of the Moon that is not too bad, all things considered. This photo is hanging in my gallery.

There are currently two operating telescopes, the Iowa Robotic Telescope and the Rigel Telescope, both located at the Winer Observatory in southern Arizona. These telescopes are used by students and faculty at the University of Iowa for teaching laboratories and research. Astronomy courses which use these facilities include the introductory non-major survey course Modern Astronomy General Astronomy for majors, and the upper-level course Astronomical Laboratory .
