Astronomy for Beginners
The aim of The Widescreen Centre is to enhance the great pleasure that is possible from the observation of heavenly bodies. From a bewildering array of products we help you to arrive at the best possible decision - for you! To the uninitiated, telescopes are something of a daunting prospect. The range available is so large and there are so many different types. Here we will only cover those types that a first time user is likely to use i.e. not too expensive. Firstly, a word of warning. Resist the temptation to go for any telescopes that advertise themselves on their power or with a zoom. When choosing an astronomical telescope it is not power that is important but aperture (the diameter of the main lens or mirror of the telescope). The larger this is, the more light it can gather and the more you will see. Remember, you'll be looking at objects in the night sky....and it's dark up there! While we are on the subject of power, there is a simple way of knowing how large a magnification a telescope could do under the best conditions. For every inch of the aperture (size of main lens) the telescope can magnify 50 times at the most. Simple eh?

The Gemini Observatory is an international partnership comprised of two 8.1-meter telescopes (each telescope has a main mirror over 26 feet across.) One telescope is located on Hawaii's Mauna Kea , and the other on . The name Gemini comes from the mythological twins, whose stars are visible to both telescopes. United States
of America United Kingdom Canada Chile Australia Argentina Brazil The flags above represent all of the countries that have joined the Gemini partnership. Astronomers in each country are allotted observing time in proportion to their country's contribution.
Star Trails at Gemini (Photo courtesy Richard Wainscoat) By building the telescopes on Mauna Kea (elevation 13,824 ft/4214 m) in Hawai'i and Cerro Pachón (elevation 8895 ft/2737 m) in central Chile, both the northern and southern skies are fully accessible to these scopes. Both sites also offer high percentages of clear weather and excellent atmospheric conditions for all types of astronomical studies. Take a look at a " real-time " image of Gemini North!

It takes more than one kind of telescope to see the light
Why we need different types of telescopes to look at outer space
Feature Story: NASA NASA Science News presents "Feature Stories", where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy an in-depth look at ongoing research (or sometimes a story that's just plain fun).
April 20, 1999 : By studying the electromagnetic emissions of objects such as stars, galaxies, and black holes, astronomers hope to come to a better understanding of the universe. Although many astronomical puzzles can only be solved by comparing images of different wavelengths, telescopes are only designed to detect a particular portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Astronomers therefore often use images from several different telescopes to study celestial phenomena. Shown below is the Milky Way Galaxy as seen by radio, infrared, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes.
The Multi-Wave Milky Way Galaxy
radio
infrared
visual
X-ray
gamma ray
Different types of telescopes usually don't take simultaneous readings. Space is a dynamic system, so an image taken at one time is not necessarily the precise equivalent of an image of the same phenomena taken at a later time. And often, there is barely enough time for one kind of telescope to observe extremely short-lived phenomena like gamma-ray bursts. By the time other telescopes point to the object, it has grown too faint to be detected.

Space Shuttle Future Ships Telescopes ... Explore Mars The telescope was invented in the beginning of the 17th century (1600's). Since that time, it has changed the way we perceive our Universe. Before the use of the telescope people thought that the Earth lay inside a glass sphere or ball and that the stars were simply holes in that ball through which light from the heavens could pass. This belief came tumbling down in 1610 when a scientist by the name of Galileo first peered through his small home made telescope at the stars. He saw numberless stars, not all at the same distance, some were nearer, and some were further. He discovered moons around Jupiter, and many other new things. Since that time humans have raced to build bigger and better telescopes, the bigger a telescope is, the more detail it reveals in distant objects, and thus the more we can learn about them. Scientists can take two or more telescopes and use them together acting like one giant telescope to get a better image. This is called an interferometer. An interferometer has the same power as would a telescope the size of the distance between the telescopes being used.

118. Antique Telescopes, Spyglasses, Telescope History.
An overview with photographs of many lesser known telescopes typical of their time.
http://www.antiquetelescopes.org/
NEW! Captain James Cook's Telescopes Topics on this site include: Cincinnati astronomy, antique telescopes, historical telescopes, antique scientific instruments, reflector telescope, refractor telescope, spyglass, pirate telescope, telescope history, history of astronomy, astronomy before the telescope. Topics to be added shortly: History of the Cincinnati telescopes and observatory, Captain Cook's telescopes, and many more photographs of old instruments. Rather than show all the well-known historical instruments in important museums (since these photos are readily available elsewhere), I prefer to show little-known astronomical instruments that are nonetheless typical of their time. I make no claims for completeness. This site is intended as an overview of historical astronomical instruments. As more material is added in the months ahead, the site will naturally become more comprehensive.
