64. Terrestrial Planet Finder
Explains NASA's plan to use sensitive telescopes to find planets outside of the solarsystem. Includes charts and drawings.
http://www.terrestrial-planet-finder.com/
a Space telescope to find planets outside from our solar-system as small as Earth
Main Page Mission Goal Design Project Status
Short Introduction

The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) uses a small collection of high sensitivity telescopes (probably 4 large 3.5-meter telescopes) with revolutionary imaging technologies. It will measure the temperature, size, and the orbital parameters of planets as small as our Earth in the habitable zones of distant solar systems. Also, TPF's spectroscopy will allow atmospheric chemists and biologists to use the relative amounts of gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and ozone to find whether a planet might support life. Launch is anticipated between 2012-2015.
"The discovery of life on another planet is potentially one of the most important scientific advances of this century, let alone this decade, and it would have enormous philosophical implications."
- National Research Council
One great challenge is how to detect planets against the blinding glare of their parent star. TPF with 4 big telescopes, will reduce the glare of parent stars to see planetary systems up to 50 light-years away.
Infrared interferometer concept for Terrestrial Planet Finder Earth-like planets
An Earth-like planet is a rocky planet. Such planets will be found quite close to their star, where the temperatures are too high for the planet to be mainly made of ice. We will determine the amount of heat on a planet by its distance from its star, and we will confirm the temperatures by the broad overall shape of its spectrum. Cool planets will be brighter at the long wavelength end of their spectrum; hot planets will be brighter at the short wavelength end.

Don't forget to stop in at the places who make the telescopes! If the information you dig up leaves you feeling more confused, think about joining a local astronomy club. Some are free, others have a low annual membership fee.
    • You will meet many other people at the meetings who already have telescopes. They can give you advice and give you ideas of costs, portability, and dealers in close surrounding areas.
    • Almost every club hosts star parties in which members who have telescopes bring them along. This gives you a chance to look through a variety of different scopes. It also lets you see what kind of size you are willing to tote around.
    • It allows you to interact with other people who have the same interest. This is a fantastic way to make new friends.
    • I've heard of a few clubs that rent telescopes to their members for a nightly charge. I have no idea how much, but it would be worth looking into.

You've Decided to Buy First, get familiar with the sky. Can you find the Andromeda galaxy? What kinds of nebulas are there in the different constellations? It is best to buy a book that includes descriptions and star charts for the beginner. Also, subscribe to a popular astronomy magazine. Most of them are aimed directly at the back yard observer.

While software can reside on a microcontroller, it is my style to execute it on a laptop, allowing the hardware to be simple and flexible. In addition, a laptop has sufficient computing power and a full bodied user interface, so that adequate attention may be given to precise tracking (sub arcsecond over many minutes), precise goto (35 arcsecond rms from horizon to horizon), and all encompasing error correcting routines. My software also tends towards straightforward text interfaces, as complex graphical environments are hard to operate in the dark and injurious to night vision. Finally, the ease of developing software and getting bug fixes and enhancements out to users the next evening should not be underestimated for laptop and PC platforms.

http://www.amateurastronomy.com/tools.html
Collimation Tools "this is because bad collimation is the number one killer of telescopes world wide."
Walter Scott Houston
Sight Tube...........................................$34.50
The basic mechanical alignment tool for Newtonian telescopes. This tool is necessary for placing the diagonal mirror in the proper place, and aiming the diagonal mirror at the center of the primary. If you only buy one tool at a time - this is the one you need first.

Cheshire..............................................$43.00
Once your diagonal is in the proper place, you are ready for the Cheshire. This tool is probably one of the most used tools of the set. It is used for very close collimating the primary on a Newtonian, either in the daylight or in complete darkness, for those times when you don't set up till late. Simply shine your red flashlight into the opening. If you have a refractor, this is the tool to use.
Autocollimator................................... Included with Full Set of Tools
This is the final step for collimating your Newtonian. Don't try to use it without first going through the proper steps with the Sight Tube and Cheshire. It won't work! The collimation has to be close to begin with or this tool will frustrate you because it is so critical. This tool is also for collimating classical cassegrains. (Not for catadioptrics.) The autocollimator is not available separately, but only when purchased with the full set of Tectron tools. The cheshire and sight tube will still be sold separately.

Telescope
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
50 cm refracting telescope at Nice Observatory A telescope (from the Greek tele = 'far' and skopein = 'to look or see'; teleskopos = 'far-seeing') is an astronomical tool which gathers and focuses electromagnetic radiation . Telescopes increase the apparent angular size of objects, as well as their apparent brightness . Telescopes used for non-astronomical purposes are often referred to as theodolites transits spotting scopes monoculars ... microscopes or spyglasses The word "telescope" usually refers to optical telescopes , but there are telescopes for most of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation Radio telescopes are focused radio antennas, usually shaped like large dishes. The dish is sometimes constructed of a conductive wire mesh whose openings are smaller than a wavelength . Radio telescopes are often operated in pairs, or larger groups to synthesize large "virtual" apertures that are similar in size to the separation between the telescopes: see aperture synthesis . The current record is many times the width of the Earth, utilizing space-based VLBI telescopes such as the Japanese VSOP satellite . Aperture synthesis is now also being applied to optical telescopes using optical interferometers (arrays of optical telescopes) and Aperture Masking Interferometry at single telescopes.
