About Me
Telecommuting
The Register has an interesting article on telecommuting stats. With Telligent, I'm working from my home office currently. Initially, we're going to try to go with a true distributed model with most of our employees. I think this is great because it doesn't limit our hiring geographically, and I would contest that the technology is there to easily collaborate still. We use things like SourceGear's Vault for our distributed source control. IMHO, that's still Vault's biggest advantage (among many others, of course) is the ability to easily create a source control solution that can be used world wide with little problems, and still amazingly fast speeds. We use Countersoft's Gemini for issue tracking across all of our projects. Though, I have a serious eye on

telecommuting Last modified: Sunday, September 01, 1996 A term coined by Jack Nilles in the early 1970s to describe a geographically dispersed office where workers can work at home on a computer and transmit data and documents to a central office via telephone lines. A major argument in favor of telecommuting over vehicular commuting is that it does not produce air pollution. In addition, many people are more productive working at home than in an office. For others, however, the contrary holds true. Telecommuting entails a work-at-home arrangement or a remote-access arrangement for at least part of the workweek on a regular basis. In general, telecommuting is a privilege which may be granted under appropriate circumstances to high performing officers whose job responsibilities are suited to such an arrangement, and each request to telecommute will be decided on an individual basis under the guidelines set forth below. In certain cases, telecommuting may be a requirement of the position, and employees will be so notified at the time of hire. Back To Top
      Eligibility
In general, this policy pertains to officers of administration, research and the libraries. Officers of instruction have considerable flexibility in setting their own work schedules, including determining when and where to work off campus. In exceptional cases support staff may be permitted to telecommute. In cases where the employee is represented by a union, the department must obtain prior approval from the Office of Employee and Labor Relations.

CIO published its own look at telecommuting in July 1991, when the tide of skepticism was near its height. From the tone of the piece, you can tell that we felt our audience had a negative bias. "Telecommuting, like Pittsburgh, is often unfairly dismissed..." we began. The essence of the piece was that even though telecommuting was generally thought of as a "frivolous work option for people who aren't serious about their jobs," there actually was hard evidence of productivity gains that needed to be considered.
Even so, we stopped far short of arguing that telecommuting was an easy-to-implement, natural workplace relationship. Managers had to pick the telecommuting employees carefully and manage them in just the right way. But, we insisted, done right, it could be worth doing.
In retrospect we were far too conservative. Data from a number of studies suggest that the population of telecommuters (typically defined as employees or independent contractors who work at home during normal business hours at least one day a month) has grown at an average rate of almost 20 percent a year, from 3.4 million in 1990 to 20 million (or 10 percent of the U.S. labor force) in 1999, and many analysts think that rate will continue to grow for years to come.

Remote-host apps keep teleworkers up with the office
When I started telecommuting, I was surprised to find very little software geared to the average federal telecommuter. All you really need to do basic office work at home is a computer, an Internet connection and an e-mail address. More advanced work such as accessing secure databases, for example, might require costly applications and arrangements outside the scope of this review. But for the average teleworker who has forgotten to bring home the right files or needs to access others stored at the office, remote PC hosting software is essential. I tested three hosting applications on two notebook PCs: a Dell Latitude D600 running Windows XP Professional and a Toshiba Tecra 8100 running Win 2000. No problem The setup of GoToMyPC was one of the easiest I have encountered. All I had to do was go to the GoToMyPC Web site while I was at my host computer. I created an account and password on the site and downloaded 2M of code. It took less than five minutes.

    Telecommuting plans hit overdrive
July 18, 2004 Nancy Liberman won't fight traffic during the week of the Democratic National Convention. The Charlestown resident will forgo her daily commute to her Bedford office and work from home instead. ADVERTISEMENT ''I don't think anyone wants to take the chance of getting stuck in God only knows what," said Liberman, vice president of marketing at EnvoyWorldWide Inc. She said about 10 other employees about a quarter of the company's staff also will work from home because they live in downtown Boston, Charlestown, and Quincy all of which will be affected by the closing of Interstate 93 and other traffic restrictions. Companies throughout Greater Boston are scrambling to adopt procedures to get through convention week as highway closings threaten to create traffic headaches all around the city. Much of their energy is focused on helping workers get through the week with minimal disruptions, although area business leaders said some executives are also rearranging delivery schedules and travel plans to ensure work goes on despite the hoopla at the FleetCenter. ''A lot of companies are talking about it, their response being that their plans would be the same for a snowstorm or severe weather. A lot of the reason that they're putting it in those terms is because of the unknown nature of this, just like a snowstorm," said Laura Avakian, president-elect of the Northeast Human Resources Association and vice president for human resources at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ave you ever wondered what it would be like to work from home? Forget about getting up early, worrying about what to wear, traffic jams and bad weather just flick the computer switch, and you're at work. Telecommuting began in the 1980's as part of the environment movement. Proponents sought to decrease transportation costs and pollution. But it was not until the technological developments of the 1990's emerged, that telecommuting became a practical option. As the prices of cellular phones, fax machines, modems and computers fell, home offices became more affordable. The phone became a more useful tool as telephone companies began offering call-waiting and caller-ID. But the home-work continuum is not for everyone. Many people decide not to work from home because, for instance, the dog won't let them alone. Many workers want to be with their children, but then fall prey to the "pester factor" from children who don't understand the concept of "work-time."

Telecommuting Tips Telecommuting T elecommuting, simply defined, is working at home or an office close to home, full or part-time. There are several driving forces in Middle Tennessee which favor the wider deployment of telecommuting as a work place policy, such as: the increase in the number of information-based professions and companies; corporate investments in new technology needed to maintain global competitiveness; and the availability of new products that enable call center personnel seamlessly to work at home. While employees may be linked to the office by any of several information transfer devices such as a telephone, modem, or fax machine, it's possible to telecommute with just a pen, paper and telephone. Telecommuting can reduce or eliminate the daily commute for employees in a way that will positively benefit the employee, employer and community.
