the Benefits - and some Issues!
Our sponsors make it possible to provide and maintain these FAQs pages:
Teleworking offers significant benefits to employers, employees, self employed individuals and entrepreneurs, and in developing the local economy. It also presents opportunities to secure wider social benefits - for example by reducing the environmental impact of car travel. Management Technology Associates has conducted several studies to obtain and analyse the views of experienced teleworkers and of managers who have experience in working with teleworkers. The following summary of the benefits includes only those aspects where a majority of experienced teleworkers and managers concur that a worthwhile benefit has been obtained. Note that benefits only accrue from successful telework programmes, and that some companies have attempted telework programmes but subsequently reverted to office based working having had a negative experience. Some aspects of telework that must be considered in order to achieve success and minimise problems are discussed below under " Are there drawbacks?

Creating a Telecommuting Strategy by Kelley Caldwell
Monster Contributing Writer
document.domain="monster.com"; var ad24=false; Telecommuting. Employees long for it, but many employers still have their doubts. For some employers, the obstacle to embracing telecommuting stems from a lack of trust in employees. For others, trust isn't the issue, but a lack of experience in how to approach this arrangement is creating the roadblock. However, with the right strategy in place, implementing a telecommuting program for your company can be a step in the right direction for all parties. Where Should You Start? First, outline a document with the reasons for the company's decision to consider telecommuting as an employee option. Create a list of the benefits associated with telecommuting. This is the easy part. Among the many employer/employee benefits are the potential for reduced commuting, improved staff morale, etc. Next, create a list of each change that is necessary for the company to launch its telecommuting program, i.e., what policies are necessary, what equipment will have to be purchased, which management issues need to be addressed, etc. Set guidelines regarding acceptable investments in equipment and office supplies as well.

Telecommuting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Telecommuting is a work arrangement in which employees enjoy flexibility in working location and hours (within limits). In other words, the daily commute to a central place of work is replaced by telecommunication links. The motto is that "work is something you do, not something you travel to". A successful telecommuting programme requires a management style which is based on results and not on close scrutiny of individual employees. This is referred to as 'managing by objective' as opposed to 'managing by observation'. The term telecommuting was coined by Jack Nilles and was first used in the United States

History
The first formal tests of telecommuting were held in 1973 and 1974 with the telecommuters working at a satellite office of an insurance company, using dumb terminals connected to a downtown mainframe. In the 1980s, employees began to work (part-time) from so-called "home offices" with a desktop PC supplied by their company. Nowadays, the telecommuting staff ( telecommuters ) usually carry laptop PCs around which they can use both at the office and at home (and almost anywhere else). The telecommuting staff are kept together by the company network and other telecommunication channels.

Schwartz NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Convincing your boss that telecommuting is right for you can be a tough sell especially if there's not already a program in place where you work.      "It can be a difficult pitch, and I think that's because many times the (would-be) telecommuter comes at it from the perspective of how it's going to be an advantage to them," said Jane Anderson, director of the Midwest Institute for Telecommuting Education . "You should always think like a manager."      "The biggest concern among employers is figuring out how they'll know if you're productive," Anderson said. Baby steps      "Never approach it from a permanent basis," Anderson suggests. "Tell them you'd like to try it for three months. Tell them they can evaluate you at the beginning, once in the middle and once at the end, to see how it's working in terms of productivity. Then tell them you'll sit down and reevaluate it at the end of the trial period." Spin control      John M. H. Edwards, chief executive officer and executive director of Telework Analytics International in Arlington, Va., a corporate consulting firm, said you may want to start by eliminating the term "telecommute" from your vocabulary.

    • Introduction You can't find a matching pair of socks; your keys have been gobbled by the couch; traffic is thick as honey and you are late for work. Does this sound like a familiar scene? If so, then try telecommuting and work from the comfort of your own home! Besides adding minutes or even hours to your valuable free time, telecommuting reduces the overall exhaust produced by automotive vehicles. As your engine burns gasoline, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and nonmethane volatile organic compounds are released into the air. While these gases are a natural result of the burning process, they can contribute to air pollution and urban smog. For instance, did you know that burning just one gallon of gasoline produces 19.64 pounds of carbon dioxide? A fossil fuel, gasoline is formed from the compressed remains of decaying plants - which are mostly carbon - over a period of thousands of years. When gasoline is burned, the carbon mixes with oxygen from the air, releasing energy to move your car. Therefore, the gas released from your exhaust pipe is the combination of both gasoline and the volume of air needed to burn it. Carbon dioxide is a natural gas and is an important part of the environment. In fact, plants need carbon dioxide to grow. But when it is produced in amounts greater than can be naturally absorbed, it builds up in the atmosphere. As a result, the atmosphere captures more heat from the sun than usual, upsetting the delicate balance of the Earth's climate.

Telecommuting / Work-at-Home Information and Opportunities
Most telecommuting opportunities are arranged after employment is secured, not necessarily advertised as such. Any other situation should be considered contract work where you must supply your own office and use your own equipment. If that's the case, then you might as well declare yourself self-employed and establish your own business in the basement or spare bedroom.

A number of larger multi-nationals have adopted it in their operations but fewer than you’d expect. Yet it really does make sense. The challenge is doing it right, with the right people, on the right schedule. Here are a few recommendations By Robert Colman Like so many innovative business management concepts, telecommuting is often hailed as a wonderful idea but remains under-used in real life. Employers across Canada talk about the importance of work-life balance but when it comes to actually instituting systems to address that, they hesitate. Quebec is considered an exception in Canada. The province has the most family and employee-friendly policies and practices in the country, according to a November 2003 study. This includes not only the option of telework but also decent pay, less overtime, personal days off with pay, flexible hours and on-site daycare. Ontarians, on the other hand, are the highest paid in the country but are the most unhappy and least satisfied with their jobs. Telecommuting is only a small piece of the larger work-life balance issue but it can be a useful tool for both employees and management. Earlier this summer

Telework/Telecommuting Telework (also called telecommuting) is working at home or a satellite office, telework center, or telecommunity center near home one or more days a week instead of commuting to the main office or place of business.
Employers around the world are using telework programs to boost productivity and reduce office and real estate costs. And because employees value the flexibility telework gives them to balance their work and home life, telework programs help employers keep valued staff and recruit qualified personnel.
The Oregon Department of Energy supports telework in Oregon, because it conserves fuel, relieves traffic congestion, and improves air quality and because it makes good business sense.
