Teacher Candidate Perceptions of Telementoring in Knowledge Forum Jim Hewitt OISE / University of Toronto jhewitt@oise.utoronto.ca ABSTRACT The success of traditional email-based telementoring rests on the ability and inclination of students to maintain open channels of communication with mentors. Telementoring in learning environments (specifically, Knowledge Forum) may offer strategic advantages by making the day-to-day evolution of student investigations more accessible. This paper describes an experiment in which University of Toronto teacher candidates worked as Knowledge Forum telementors in four elementary school classrooms. Two reoccurring (and possibly related) problems were identified: 1) Teacher candidates had little previous experience with student-directed investigations and were unsure how to best support learners; and 2) Teacher candidate messages sometimes appeared to close down student threads. Despite these findings, teacher candidates reported that they found the experience of electronically mentoring a Knowledge Forum class to be professionally valuable. A Virtual Army of Volunteers
Charities find new ways to let people do good works online By NICOLE WALLACE Charities and the people they serve are benefiting from a new wave of volunteers, many of whom they will never see. The Internet ALSO SEE:
Online Volunteers: Sources of Information

increasingly is giving people like Latasha Greer a full-time graduate student at Columbia University who works part-time at a small family foundation and teaches a tenth-grade course each afternoon a way to fit volunteering into their busy and sometimes unpredictable schedules. She is one of 400 volunteers who exchange e-mail with New York high-school students through a charity called iMentor. Ms. Greer and the Brooklyn senior she has been paired with exchange e-mail messages several times a week on topics such as career goals and college applications. The proliferation of such online opportunities reflects a growing demand for flexible forms of volunteering. In addition to tutoring students, thousands of people are providing friendship and support to people in need and offering their fund-raising and Web-design expertise online to help charities around the world. Among the organizations that have seen growth in a trend often called virtual volunteering:

My Tips and Advice: Volunteers and Missionaries Tip: Take Charge Organizations need help mobilizing people to support a cause. You can contribute on a short-term basis by creating opportunities for others to donate, volunteer, or participate in events that raise money for a charity. • If you are considering hosting a house party that is also an information session, have your favorite charity come talk to your friends or coworkers about the organization. • If you're participating in a fundraising event, such as a walk or a gala, invite your friends to join you, or to sponsor you. Word of mouth is great advertising, so spread the word and get others involved—an army of new supporters can be worth as much or more than a check.

Tip: "Become an Online Volunteer"
The Internet has created a whole new kind of volunteer opportunity : online volunteering. By being an online volunteer, you, and volunteers from all over the world, can help organizations that serve communities in developing countries without ever leaving their own communities (or homes)! Online volunteers translate documents, write articles, research data, build web sites, mentor young people, design logos, and engage in many other projects to benefit organizations serving people in the developing world. While online volunteering may, on the surface, seem like a role for technology professionals, most online volunteers are not—they are just interested, involved people who may provide advice or consulting or perform administrative tasks for the charity they are helping. *The practice of donating time online is also known as "virtual volunteering," "cyber service," "telementoring," "e-volunteering" and "cyber volunteering."

Volunteer Management and Computers
Mark Gannon, of the Institute for Volunteering Research in Britain, published his findings from an unpublished survey of voluntary organizations around the issue of computer technology and its implications for managing volunteers.
The research on voluntary groups showed that:
  • More than half did not have e-mail
  • 75% did not have a Web-site
  • Two-thirds had fewer than 10 computers in their organization
  • Fewer than 50% had computer systems that were networked.
  • Only one-third had an information technology specialist on staff
Given this information, he outlined the ways in which computer technology can streamline the work of managing volunteers. Gannon's recommendation makes a good checklist for anyone wishing to integrate computer technology into his or her program. It also has excellent reasons to share with administrators to provide why technology is critical to the continuation of a viable volunteer program. Reasons to Share with Administrators Volunteer Management Software The most direct means by which computers can streamline the management process is with the use volunteer database, made possible by one of the many different types of software. Organizations can create their own, if they have such programs as Microsoft Access, Filemaker Pro, or Lotus Approach. If your organization wants to build its own database, help is available. Gannon recommends visiting this site http://uk.dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/Databases. The site is a link to online user groups, Web Directories, and specific database packages.

This information was last updated on March 6, 2000 The Virtual Volunteering Project's information is geared to agencies who already understand the basics of volunteer management, and how to work with volunteers effectively in traditional, face-to-face settings. The Project Web site does not have information to teach the fundamentals of volunteer management. Our list of Online Resources for Volunteer Managers has links to sites that provide information on the basics of volunteer management. Virtual volunteering should not be looked at as a replacement for face-to-face volunteering; instead, it is an expansion of your volunteer resources, an augmentation of your organization's activities, and another way for someone to help support your organization and give back to the community. For some people, it will be a preferred avenue of volunteering, but for many people, it will be an additional avenue of volunteering. Involving volunteers via the Internet comes naturally to some people; for others, there is a significant learning curve. Keep in mind that not all of this information may be applicable to your organization or to every manager. Also remember that this is new territory for all of us! We're all still learning.
