Sweden Note: This online review is updated and revised continuously, as soon as results of new scientific research become available. It therefore presents state-of-the-art information on the topic it covers. The Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha lies in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, 3 degrees south of the equator and 345 kilometers northeast of Cabo de São Roque, Brazil (Carleton and Olson 1999). It is the easternmost outpost of the Neotropics and consists of one main island (area = 16.9 square kilometers) with a string of approximately 12 minor islets (Olson 1994, Carleton and Olson 1999). The island and islets of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago are volcanic in origin and have never been connected by land bridge to the South American mainland. Consequently, all native animals of the archipelago have colonized the islands by flight or rafting over the sea. On 10 August 1503, the renowned explorer Amerigo Vespucci landed on the main island of Fernando de Noronha and wrote the first descriptions of its fauna for science. He found no humans living on the island, but noted that trees were plentiful and that land birds and sea birds were in great abundance. The only other animals he saw were lizards, snakes and "very big rats" (Carleton and Olson 1999).

Dry Forests and Savannas The Human Aspect Threats The principal threat to biodiversity conservation in the region is unmanaged land settlement and resource use. Extensive free-range cattle ranching has serious long-term impacts on fragile Chaco and Chiquitano ecosystems, while important expanses of forest continue to be converted to relatively short-term farming enterprises. Sport and commercial hunting pressure from city-based hunters continues to increase, while large-scale infrastructure development (international highways and gas pipelines) are stimulating regional-scale shifts in human populations and productive activities.

Wildlife Health Hotspots Wildlife Health Hotspots- a WCS perspective: The Wildlife Conservation Society’s portfolio of animal and human health-related projects spans the globe, and has clearly identified common problems that nevertheless merit context-specific solutions. Demand for a “one health” perspective continues to grow, as socioeconomic progress demands sustained improvements in health for humans, their domestic animals, and the environment. Where is the nexus of conservation, development, and health most obvious? While scenarios vary across the globe, themes emerge that guide our ‘diagnostic’ as well as ‘therapeutic’ approaches. The following landscape-based portraits illustrate the value of a truly multidisciplinary approach that includes the health sciences.
Mongolia’s Eastern Steppe Roughly the size of the state of Oregon, the approximately 250,000 km2 Eastern Steppe landscape of Mongolia is perhaps the planet’s last and largest example of an essentially intact temperate grassland ecosystem. It is home to Asia’s largest remaining population of wild ungulate, with the Mongolian gazelle migrating almost unhindered in numbers approaching one million or more. The Eastern Steppe landscape provides breathtakingly vast wilderness scenes with equally amazing wildlife populations and numbers. Lack of surface water has kept human and livestock populations relatively low, with the result that one can travel for kilometer after kilometer through lush rangelands that have not been degraded, rangelands without fences, buildings, or herds of livestock except at long intervals.

Leatherback Turtles and Trinidad Piping Guan
(March-August) 2 days, 1 night Day 1 L Follow the east coast northwards to the remote village of Grande Riviere, either stopping en route to sightsee or bird, or arrive in time for lunch to spend the afternoon at the beach or on a ‘wet’ river walk through the forest along the shingle bed of the shallow clear Shark River. Stay at Mount Plaisir Estate , one of the best places to see leatherback turtles . At the peak of the season (Mar-Aug) it is common to see ten or more laying simultaneously. Day 2 BL An optional dawn start to photograph any last turtles as they head back to sea by first light (flash photography should be avoided). Avid birders can then go in search of the Pawi or Trinidad Guan, a rare endemic species now only found on this section of the Northern Range. Otherwise return to bed and have a leisurely morning on the beach or explore the village. Leave after lunch to arrive in Port of Spain in mid-afternoon (or earlier to catch flights to Tobago). It is well worth staying on at Mount Plaisir Estate for extra nights. Price per person 1 person 2-4 people regular 08.00h start on Day 2

Its close proximity to the mainland is reflected in a remarkably diverse bird list featuring representatives from most Neotropical families but lacking the proliferation of species that can seem overwhelming elsewhere on the continent. March and April are good times to visit the island, marking the peak of nesting activity but before the onset of summer rains.
We will stay for eight nights at the supremely comfortable Asa Wright Nature Centre where the excellence of the service and facilities is matched by the quality and ease of the birdwatching. This relaxed and easy paced holiday concludes with a visit to neighbouring Tobago which offers a contrasting mix of rainforest, seabirds and underwater life around a pristine coral reef. Visitors to the Asa Wright Centre, whether human or avian, are always well fed! Hungry birdwatchers are served delicious meals in the gracious old plantation building which is now the headquarters of the Centre and are soon introduced to the afternoon ritual of tea on the verandah followed by iced rum punch at sunset. Sugar solution feeders are replenished at dawn for the various hummingbirds, honeycreepers and Bananaquits and bird tables heaped with fruit to attract a steady stream of forest birds within range of binoculars and cameras.

"It is scarcely exaggerating to say that the waters of the Solimoens are as well stocked with large alligators in the dry season as a ditch in England is in summer with tadpoles," wrote Henry Walter Bates in 1863. A British naturalist, Bates was astonished by the abundance of "alligators"or black caimanparticularly in western Brazil, where the Amazon River is referred to as the Solimoes (Bates's Solimoens). For more than four years, Bates lived in the sleepy village of Ega, now called Tefe, and observed the natural history of the region, including the habits of the area's top predator, the black caiman.

ZOO GOOD BUT TRUE By Natasha Coker Features Desk Express Section 2 October 4, 2000 Page 1 Years a go, I obliterated the zoo from my shortlist of fun places to visit. It wasn't that the animals were boring. Sure, there were some, like the big cats, that were forever lulling off as if exhausted from an imaginary rendezvous with nearby Savannah faith-monotony of the visit was the killer. After you've eyeballed the animals, waved to the zookeepers, and sweet-talked the sno-cone man into giving you that extra zap of condensed milk, it's over. And I'm not alone. Just one of curiosity, I asked a friend, "Girl, when last have you been to the zoo?" Her reply, "Whew, a looong time. Ain't nothing to see." But there is. From this month, the Emperor Valley Zoo has introduced a zoo education department. The services, which are free for the moment, are expected to revolutionise going to the zoo, as we know it. "It's no longer just a walk around the zoo, see the animals and go out," said Deborah de la Rosa, co-ordinator of the zoo education department. Schools, groups, families and individuals can now make reservations to join guided tours where they'll learn about everything from breeding in captivity to endangered species.

International trade in endangered species
Species at Risk Worldwide
Canada is working with 145 nations around the world to prevent species from becoming extinct as a result of over-exploitation due to international trade. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) prohibits commercial trade in species which are threatened with extinction and controls and monitors trade in many other species to ensure that trade is at sustainable levels. Appendix I of CITES lists species recognized as threatened with extinction. Trade in these species and any products made from them for primarily commercial purposes is prohibited. Appendix II lists species that are not currently threatened with extinction, but may become so unless trade is strictly regulated to avoid over-exploitation.
