U.S. Teenage Pregnancy Statistics With Comparative Statistics For Women Aged 20-24
February 19, 2004
Notes on Teenage Pregnancy Statistics
The data in these tables come from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (number of births); The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGItotal number of abortions); the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (age distribution of women obtaining abortions); and the U.S. Bureau of the Census (population estimates). The exact sources are listed after the tables. We have adjusted the age distributions of women obtaining abortions to ensure year-to-year comparability; for a description of the methodology, see S.K. Henshaw and J. Van Vort, eds., Abortion Factbook, 1992 Edition: Readings, Trends, and State and Local Data to 1988 , New York: AGI, 1992, p. 162. Please note that in these tables, "age" refers to the woman's age at which the pregnancy ended, not the age at which she became pregnant or decided between having an abortion and carrying the pregnancy to term. Consequently, actual numbers of pregnancies among teenagers are higher than those reported here, because most of the 19-year-old women who were pregnant had their births or abortions at age 20 and, thus, were not counted as teenagers. Likewise, please note that "year" refers to the calendar year in which the birth or abortion occurred, not the year in which the conception occurred.

164. When Children Have Children - AACAP Facts For Families #31
Teenage pregnancy is usually a crisis for the pregnant girl and her family. Adult parents can help prevent teenage pregnancy through open communication
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/pregnant.htm
W HEN C HILDREN H AVE C HILDREN No. 31 (Updated July 2004) Babies born in the U.S. to teenage mothers are at risk for long-term problems in many major areas of life, including school failure, poverty, and physical or mental illness. The teenage mothers themselves are also at risk for these problems. Teenage pregnancy is usually a crisis for the pregnant girl and her family. Common reactions include anger, guilt, and denial. If the father is young and involved, similar reactions can occur in his family. Adolescents who become pregnant may not seek proper medical care during their pregnancy, leading to an increased risk for medical complications. Pregnant teenagers require special understanding, medical care, and educationparticularly about nutrition, infections, substance abuse, and complications of pregnancy. They also need to learn that using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, can damage the developing fetus. All pregnant teenagers should have medical care beginning early in their pregnancy. Pregnant teens can have many different emotional reactions:
  • some may not want their babies some may want them for idealized and unrealistic ways others may view the creation of a child as an achievement and not recognize the serious responsibilities some may keep a child to please another family member some may want a baby to have someone to love, but not recognize the amount of care the baby needs

Teenage Pregnancy. Highlights: An ERIC/CAPS Fact Sheet.
Teenage parenthood is by no means a new social phenomenon. Historically, women have tended to begin childbearing during their teens and early twenties. During the past two decades the U. S. teenage birthrate has actually declined (Polit and others, 1982). In the late 1950s, 90 out of 1000 women under 20 gave birth as compared with 52 out of 1000 in 1978. Several factors contribute to the current attention focused on teenage pregnancy and parenthood. 1. There is currently a large number of young women in the 13 to 19 age range, so that while the birthrates are declining, the absolute number of teenagers is increasing. 2. These statistics do not distinguish between intentional and unintentional pregnancies, or pregnancies occurring in or out of wedlock. From the 1978 figures, only one in six pregnancies concluded as births following marriage, and eight in ten premarital teenage pregnancies were unintended. 3. The declining birthrate is not consistent for all teenagers: among those 14 or younger, the birthrate is increasing.

Teenage Pregnancy and Drug Abuse: Sources of Problem Behaviors. ERIC/CUE Digest No. 58.
Many at-risk children manifest behaviors that are both a cause and result of their lack of success in school, and possible subsequent dropping out. Two such behavior patterns that can sabotage the future of students are discussed below.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE
Some predictors of drug and alcohol experimentation, use, and abuse are examined below. Early Antisocial Behavior. Jessor and Jessor (1978) explained drug use as one outcome of "proneness to problem behavior" and as part of a larger syndrome of deviance in which a wide range of "problem behavior" shared common precipitants. However, school problems themselves may not lead to drug use; rather, social factors which lead to poor school performance may be linked to drug involvement. Attitudes, Beliefs, and Personality Traits. Attitudes, beliefs, and personality traits most closely linked with substance use include attenuated attachment to parents, lack of commitment to education, low religiosity, and alienation from dominant societal norms and values (Hawkins et al., 1986).

Teenage Pregnancy During our teenaged years we make a lot of major decisions about our lives and take on a lot of new responsibilities. When it comes to sex, these decisions can have serious consequences like sexually transmitted diseases or HIV, sexual coercion and pressure, or unwanted pregnancy. With such serious consequences, you may want to help your teen by sharing information on the contraceptive options outlined on this site and information on safe sexual practices. The following are a few quick facts concerning teenage pregnancy trends in Canada covering the period from 1974 to 1998:
  • There is a lower rate of teenage pregnancies now then in 1974. The rate in 1997 was 43 pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19. (Statistics Canada and Canadian Council on Social Development)
  • The U.S. rate is more than double the Canadian rate. (National Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy)
  • Just over half of teen pregnancies in Canada resulted in live births in 1994, compared to about two-thirds in 1974. Less than 20% of teenage women who gave birth in 1994 were married, compared to 75% in 1974.

Teen pregnancy and birth rates have declined steadily in the United States in recent years. Experts attribute the declining rates to a substantial increase in contraceptive use by sexually active teens and to a decrease in sexual activity among adolescents. Despite these declines, the United States continues to have the highest teen birth rate among all industrialized nations anda higher teen birth rate than over 50 developing nations. Teenage pregnancy and childbearing have considerable, long-term consequences for teenage parents and their children. For example, research shows that when younger adolescents give birth, they are less likely to complete high school and more likely during their lives to have a larger number of children than are non-parenting teens. Children born to younger teen mothers may also experience poorer health outcomes, lower educational attainment, and higher rates of adolescent childbearing themselves when compared to children born to older mothers. Americans commonly believe that educational, social, medical, and economic difficulties experienced by adolescent mothers and their children are the

Teenage pregnancy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Teenage pregnancy is defined as females under the age of 19 becoming pregnant . In developing countries teenage pregnancy is common since many women are married and bear children whilst teenagers. However, in industrialized societies , teenage pregnancy is now considered a social problem. There are several perceived problems with teenage pregnancies in industrialised societies:
  • teenagers are not thought to be ready, either emotionally or financially, to raise children , even if they are able to do so physiologically adults generally feel that teenagers should not be engaging in sexual activity. teenaged mothers (and their families) are frequently treated as social pariahs, leading to problems accessing education and other services that might help them to provide a secure future. teenage pregnancy often leads to later poverty and to poor life outcomes (for example, educational underachievement) for the children of teenage mothers.

Why is Teenage Pregnancy Declining? The Roles of Abstinence, Sexual Activity and Contraceptive Use
By Jacqueline E. Darroch and Susheela Singh
    Introduction
The 1990s have witnessed sustained declines in teen-age birthratesa heartening development in view of the often negative effects of adolescent childbearing on young women and their children and the costs to society as a whole. Teenage births should not be the only concern, however. More than three-quarters of pregnancies among teenagers each year are unintended, and more than one-quarter end in abortion; therefore, helping young women avoid an unintended pregnancy is also an important public policy goal. Here, again, the news is encouraging: The teenage pregnancy rate also dropped in the 1990s. Nevertheless, some 900,000 Americans younger than 20 become pregnant every year, and the U.S. teenage pregnancy rate is one of the highest in the developed world. Ensuring the continuation of the downward trend in teenage pregnancy is essential, and a key step is understanding the factors behind the progress already made. Declines in teenage pregnancies can be achieved through two mechanismschanges in sexual behavior and changes in contraceptive use. Some observers have claimed that the declines are the result of increased abstinence.

    Adolescent Pregnancy
Adolescents face a wide range of issues everyday relating to their physiological, emotional, cultural, and psychological concerns. One of the most important and complicated issues is teenage pregnancy and childbearing. The teen birthrate has declined in recent years in the United States, but they remain an endemic public health problem. Young women of color and young women of low income are disproportionately affected by teenage childbearing. There is a great deal of information that focuses on identifying teens at risk and preventing behaviors that lead to unintended pregnancy.
