Helping San Diego Youth Build a Bright Future BRIGHT Families has lost a valuable mentor and friend. For a memorial to Claire Slater, click here Teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, drugs, crime. If they only knew what you know now. The pregnancy rate among adolescents in the United States is higher than any other Western nation, and the statistics are the very worst right here in California. What are the causes of this problem, and how can we solve it?. We believe the solution lies in information, education, and support. Many teenagers have few positive role models in their lives. They need someone they can talk to, someone they can trust, someone who can help them make good decisions for themselves. That’s why BRIGHT Families matches teens with mentors who provide support, guidance, and a caring role model. The San Diego BRIGHT Families Project is a mentoring program to help youth negotiate through their turbulent teen years. A primary goal of the program is to provide youth with the knowledge and strength to avoid teen pregnancy. In addition, the program focuses on teaching teens how to have positive relationships, fostering a caring environment to help build self esteem, and exposing teens to different opportunities for careers and education. Mentors spend six months with their teens, for at least five hours per month. They talk with teens about reproductive health, teach them how to set and achieve goals, help with homework, and form positive relationships. BRIGHT Families trains mentors on the reproductive health curriculum, and also shows them how to effectively work with their mentees. In addition, the project provides mentor support and holds fun and educational group activities every month.

Teens Your Mind
If you're a pregnant teen, you're not alone. About half a million adolescents give birth each year. Most teens who have babies didn't plan on becoming pregnant. You may have been surprised when you found out or even hoped it wasn't true. You may have been terrified to tell your parents. You may have worried how this might affect your relationships with your family, friends, and the baby's father. Sharing the news of your pregnancy can be one of the most difficult conversations to have. Whether you feel confused, worried, scared, or excited, you'll want to know how your life will change, what you can do to have a healthy baby, and what it takes to become a good parent. The most important thing you can do is to take good care of yourself so that you and your baby will be healthy. Girls who get the proper care and make the right choices have a very good chance of having healthy babies. Prenatal Care
If you are pregnant, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible to begin getting prenatal care (medical care during pregnancy). The sooner you start to get medical care, the better your chances that you and your baby will be healthy. If you can't afford to go to a doctor or clinic for prenatal care, there are social service organizations that can help you. Ask your parent, school counselor, or another trusted adult to help you locate resources in your community.

Preterm Labor After Delivery Breastfeeding Weight Control Between Pregnancies Teen Pregnancy Adolescent pregnancies are higher risk than the pregnancies of healthy adult women. There are several reasons for this. First, teenage girls may not be completely through their own growth process. Adding pregnancy to a time of rapid personal growth will certainly increase nutritional demands. It will also challenge reproductive organs early in their development. As a result, pregnant teens are more likely to deliver their babies early (premature) or have a baby with low birth weight. Complications of pregnancy such as anemia, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and preeclampsia are also more likely to develop. Because of higher risks, it is critical that pregnant teenagers seek prenatal care as soon as they find out they are pregnant. Enrolling in prenatal care early in pregnancy can help ensure a healthy pregnancy outcome. Good obstetrical care will ensure that problems are detected and treated early, protecting both mother and child. It is very important that pregnant teenage girls keep all their prenatal medical appointments and that they are educated about pregnancy needs and good health practices.

Diaphragm
What is a diaphragm?
A diaphragm is a shallow, dome-shaped rubber disk with a flexible rim that fits within the vagina and covers the cervix so sperm cannot reach the uterus.
How is it used?
  • The diaphragm must be covered with spermicide and placed within the vagina to cover the cervix.
The diaphragm acts by blocking the cervix and preventing the sperm from entering the uterus. The spermicide acts by immobilizing and killing the sperm, making it unable to fertilize an egg.
The diaphragm may be left in place for 24 hours, but more spermicide must be inserted every two hours, or every time sexual intercourse is repeated. The diaphragm must be left in place for six hours after sexual intercourse before taking it out.
Does it protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)? No. The diaphragm protects against certain STIs, including gonorrhea and chlamydia, but does not protect against others such as HIV and herpes. Does it protect against pregnancy?

Birth rate drops for U.S. teens
The survey shows that parents can influence whether adolescents have sex, use contaception or become pregnant
Experts credit less sex, more contraception
April 30, 1998 Web posted at: 10:39 a.m. EDT (1439 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) The number of teen women giving birth in the United States dropped 8.5 percent between 1991 and 1995, according to a newly released study from the National Center for Health Statistics. The annual rate of teen births about a half million per year has dropped steadily since 1991, officials said. The study showed teen births dropped in every state, and across all races, the government said. Birth rates for African-American teens fell 21 percent between 1991 and 1996, but remain double the birth rate for white teens. Hispanic teens now have the highest birth rate, with more than one in 10 Hispanic teens giving birth each year. Twelve states saw birth rates decline more than 12 percent; five of them had birth rates drop more than 16 percent.
