Quick Facts
  • There are fewer teenage pregnancies and a lower rate of teen pregnancies now than in 1974. The teenage pregnancy rate in Canada was at its highest in 1974 (54 per 1,000) then declined until reaching its lowest point in 1987 (41.1). The rate then rose gradually until it hit 48.1 in 1992 and has been fluctuating since then. The rate in 1995 was 47 pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19. (Statistics Canada and Canadian Council on Social Development) Just over half of teen pregnancies in Canada resulted in live births in 1994 compared to about two-thirds in 1974. About 19% of teenage women who gave birth in 1994 were married, compared to 75% in 1974. (Statistics Canada) Data on teen pregnancy and socio-economic status are not readily available for Canada; however, there is evidence that many American teens who become parents are already economically and educationally disadvantaged before having children. "Early childbearing often compounds these early disadvantages and makes it more difficult for young parents to keep pace with their peers who do not become parents in their teenage years." (Alan Guttmacher Institute) The proportion of Canadian teenagers aged 15 to 19 who have had sexual intercourse declined between 1990 and 1996: by 12 percentage points for females (to 51%) and 14 percentage points for males (to 43%). Report: U.S. teen pregnancy rate hit 20-year low in 1995
October 15, 1998
Web posted at: 12:21 p.m. EDT (1621 GMT) NEW YORK (AP) The pregnancy rate among U.S. teen-agers hit a 20-year low in 1995 and the abortion rate also dropped during the first half of the decade, according to a study released on Thursday. The abortion rate fell by one-fourth between 1990 and 1995, according to the report by the nonprofit Alan Guttmacher Institute, which researches reproductive health issues. The study attributed the pregnancy decline to fewer teens having sex and more of them using birth control. "A lot of the messages that have been put out about the importance of delaying sexual activity ... seem to be having an effect," said Susan Tew, a spokeswoman for the institute. According to the study, 101 of every 1,000 females between ages 15 and 19 were pregnant in 1995, the most recent year for which data was available.

Introduction
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any industrialized country, and California continues to have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation. Although the overall rate of teen pregnancy has been declining since 1991, the rates have remained high for teens who are most vulnerable, such as younger unmarried teens. The national unmarried teen birth rate steadily decreased from 62 in 1991 to 54 births per 1,000 females in 1996a 12% decline. The teen birth rate decreased among all races (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 1998). Comparable to the rest of the nation, California's teen pregnancy rates have also decreased since 1991 by 16%. In 1996, the teen birth rate was 63 births per 1000 females. Although the teen (ages 15-19) birth rate in California has also decreased among all races since 1991, Hispanic teens showed the smallest decrease, from 122 in 1991 to 104 births per 1,000 females in 1996a 15% decline. This is compared to a 23% decrease in African Americans and a 24% decrease in Non-Hispanic Whites (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 1998).

By Jeff Stein "We are on our own" By Laura Rozen Complete archives for News Good news from teen America By Joan Walsh April 30, 1999 A s the nation agonizes over what's wrong with American teenagers in the wake of the Littleton massacre, it would be easy to miss a slice of extraordinary good news that emerged Thursday from the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI). For the fifth year in a row, the teen birthrate has declined, more than 16 percent over the past six years. The drop is even more striking among African-American teens. The birthrate for black teens declined by a quarter between 1991 and 1997, the last full year for which data is available. Abortion rates have declined for all groups, meaning that girls have been able to prevent pregnancies, not just terminate more of them. Many people will squabble over who deserves credit. From Jane Fonda to Gary Bauer, celebrities, ideologues and activists on both the left and right labeled teen pregnancy one of the nation's biggest problems in the late 1980s. On the right, programs preached abstinence, while public health advocates lobbied for, and won, higher spending on health education and contraception. Although the teen birthrate decline has been evident for several years, there wasn't sufficient data to indicate which approach was correct.

Teenage Pregnancy. Highlights:
An ERIC/CAPS Fact Sheet
by Laurie L. Lachance
Teenage parenthood is by no means a new social phenomenon. Historically, women have tended to begin childbearing during their teens and early twenties. During the past two decades the U. S. teenage birthrate has actually declined (Polit and others, 1982). In the late 1950s, 90 out of 1000 women under 20 gave birth as compared with 52 out of 1000 in 1978. Several factors contribute to the current attention focused on teenage pregnancy and parenthood.
There is currently a large number of young women in the 13 to 19 age range, so that while the birthrates are declining, the absolute number of teenagers is increasing.
These statistics do not distinguish between intentional and unintentional pregnancies, or pregnancies occurring in or out of wedlock. From the 1978 figures, only one in six pregnancies concluded as births following marriage, and eight in ten premarital teenage pregnancies were unintended.
The declining birthrate is not consistent for all teenagers: among those 14 or younger, the birthrate is increasing.

114. Teenage Pregnancy - World Population Awareness
Reducing teen pregnancy is important for many reasons. The teen pregnancy rate in the US is twice that of any other industrialized nation.
http://www.overpopulation.org/teenpreg.html
Teen Pregnancy Home USA Teens Worldwide "I don't know how I got pregnant - we only did it once!" "I was saving it for the right guy and when I was older, but suddenly he seemed like the man of my dreams and he told me he loved me, and I thought that if anything happened, we'd always be together and love would take care of everything". Reducing teen pregnancy is important for many reasons:
  • The teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. is twice that of any other industrialized nation. Teens are often less able to care for their children. Pregancy for teens is more dangerous and traumatic. Many teen pregancies end in abortions. Teen birth adds directly to population growth by reducing the time between generations. Most importantly, almost all teen pregancies are unintended.

There are one billion teenagers in the world today. Half are young women. Many will become pregnant. Many in certain countries are pushed into early marriage. Education of girls has proven to delay the child-bearing years, which is key to detracting from 'population momentum' - the phenomonen that occurs when large numbers of women enter their child-bearing years.
