(Good News from CDC)
The Center for Disease Control recently published some encouraging data. According to the latest studies the rates of teen pregnancy and abortion have dropped significantly in our country. Advocates of sex education programs have claimed that this drop is due to an increase in the use of contraception among teens. However, as an article in the Washington Citizen (May 1999) brings out, they should look more closely at the research before drawing that conclusion. In fact, the latest studies from that same source show that teen sexual activity has dropped under the 50 percent mark. According to that study the actual overall use of contraception has fallen. While the use of condoms has increased, it was offset by a decrease in the use of oral contraceptives which are more effective at preventing pregnancy. Carrie Abbott, Executive Director of SHARE (Sexuality, Health and Relationship Education) draws this conclusion: "A close look at the data clearly reveals that reducing pregnancy and abortion rates can only be attributed to decreased sexual activity. In other words, abstinence works. The real cultural impact is not because of an increase in the use of contraception, but because of a renewed commitment to honoring the special place for sex within marriage." The fact is that teens want the opportunity to make and keep noble commitments. They are beginning to reject the rhetoric of a generation which presented sex as "free." They know that nothing worthwhile in life is free. A local survey of Seattle teens which appeared in the

As Teen Pregnancy Dropped, So Did Child Poverty
Study Looks At Decline Over 10-Year Period
By Ceci Connolly Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 14, 2005; Page A10 A decade of declining teenage birth rates has led to a notable reduction in the number of U.S. children living in poverty, according to a new analysis. Building on research by two congressional committees, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy released a state-by-state report this week identifying how many more children would be living in poverty or growing up in a household with one parent in 2002 if the teenage pregnancy rate had remained at 1991 levels.

Nationally, the teenage birth rate fell 30 percent from 1991 to 2002, the most recent year for which such statistics are available.

Teen Pregnancy
An American Dilemma Testimony before the House of Representatives, Committee on Small Business, Subcommittee on Empowerment, Washington, DC, July 16, 1998 David Popenoe Throughout the history of the world, until the modern era, teen pregnancies were the norm. When a young girl became sexually mature she was married off and soon accomplished that for which she is biologically designed, giving birth to the next generation. Teen pregnancies are still the norm in much of the developing world. Each child born to a young girl normally is considered a blessing. But in the developed nations the situation is different. The networks to help the teen mothers, composed of grandmothers, large, extended families, intimate neighborhoods, and working fathers, are seldom in existence. More importantly, women are expected to become educated and, for many, have secure employment before they bear children. Education is considered to be a necessity for living in a complex, information-rich society, and young women today are involved in the work force at about the same rate as young men. Under modern conditions, teen pregnancies are considered not a blessing but a curse. This is so because most of the children of these pregnancies will grow up fatherless and at high risk themselves for various social and behavioral problems, the education and work lives of their mothers will be seriously impaired, and the welfare and social costs to the nation will be great.
