NIDA African American teens at greater risk of tobacco addiction Research Finds That African American Teens Are at Greater Risk of Tobacco Addiction For African American teens who smoke, culturally-appropriate evaluation of nicotine dependence is an important
part of cessation treatment, according to a study published in the December 2000 issue of the Journal of the
National Medical Association. African American students continue to have the lowest rates of smoking among the nation’s 8th, 10th, and 12th
graders, according to results from the 2000 Monitoring the Future Study, an annual survey that tracks drug and

Teen smoking linked to metabolic syndrome
Disorder related to excess belly fat, heart disease and diabetes
Exposure to cigarette smoke raises the risk among teens of metabolic syndrome, a disorder associated with excess belly fat that increases the chances of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, according to a study. Researchers said it is the first study to establish such a link in teenagers. "The bottom line to me is: As we gear up to take on this epidemic of obesity, we cannot abandon protecting our children from secondhand smoke and smoking," said lead author Dr. Michael Weitzman, executive director of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center for Child Health Research in Rochester, N.Y. For the study, metabolic syndrome was defined as having at least three of five characteristics: a big waist, high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats called triglycerides, low levels of good cholesterol, and evidence of insulin resistance, in which the body cannot efficiently use insulin. In the study, published Monday in the American Heart Association online journal Circulation, researchers found that 6 percent of 12-to 19-year-olds had metabolic syndrome and that the prevalence increased with exposure to tobacco smoke.

Local News Juvenile Court Journal: State law is helping families struggling with teen addiction One In An Occasional Series Sunday, March 24, 2002 By Barbara White Stack, Post-Gazette Staff Writer As the sickness subsided, 17-year-old Wayne Carelli noticed scars on his legs where he'd scratched himself raw and black blotches at his ankles. He hoped the discoloration was dirt. He tried scrubbing it off in the shower. But the stains from heroin use don't wash away that easily. Four years ago, Wayne Carelli, 17, began abusing heroin. Now he's in treatment and staying at the O.U.R. House in East Liberty, where his mother, Marilyn, and other family members attend regular therapy sessions.
