Previous studies have suggested that the earlier someone starts smoking, the more likely they are to be life-long smokers and the more trouble they have in kicking their addiction, says Edward Levin, who led the study at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, US. Experiments to distinguish between the various possible causes could not ethically be conducted in humans. But when Levin and his team let teenage rats help themselves to nicotine, they found that female teen rats - at an age equivalent to 14-year-old girls - take twice as much as rats only exposed to nicotine in adulthood. And this insatiable use carries on when they grow up.

Lisa Gorman Ninety percent of smokers begin smoking by the age of 19. Nicotine is considered the number one entrance into other substance abuse. Adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who smoke daily are 15 times more likely to use illicit drugs than their peers. Substance abuse is a learned behavior. Teens who begin smoking learn to use the substance. The earlier youth begin using tobacco, the more likely they will continue use into adulthood. Why is tobacco use addicting? The nicotine in tobacco acts as a stimulant, depressant, or tranquilizer depending on the dosage. An individual builds up tolerance to tobacco use, requiring larger doses to maintain a certain physiological effect. When the body becomes accustomed to the presence of nicotine, it then requires the chemical to function normally. This level of dependence is referred to as an addiction. Teens who are addicted to tobacco have several common experiences. A number of them tried their first cigarette in the sixth or seventh grade. Smokers often do not perform well at school. They do not feel they are a part of school and are isolated from those students who are active in sports. Most of the smokers feel they have little hope of going to college or getting a good job after high school. They also report addictions to other substances, such as alcohol. They experience pressure from home and school, and use tobacco as a form of relief. In addition, teen smokers enjoy trying to hide their smoking or outwit school administration. This has made school more fun for some tobacco users.

A compilation of five years of animal and other studies concludes that teenagers may be more susceptible to the rewarding effects of smoking than adults. The report, "Closing the Gap on Youth Tobacco Use," analyzed the findings from animal, human, and policy studies conducted by the University of California at Irvine's Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center, as well as findings from Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, Southern California University, and the University of Wisconsin. The review identified specific factors that promote tobacco use and addiction among adolescents, including age, changes in the brain from nicotine (which was found to occur in the brains of adolescent rats after one exposure), and failure to feel the negative effects of nicotine as strongly as adults. "The knowledge gained from working together will help us increase our understanding of how young people can become vulnerable to tobacco and the factors that contribute to tobacco dependence," said Frances Leslie, director of the UC research center and a professor of pharmacology. "We hope that ultimately, our shared research will be applied to tobacco-prevention efforts." Other major findings include: Tobacco use is one of the nation’s leading health problems, killing more than 430,000 Americans and costing more than $38 billion in taxpayer dollars each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80 percent of tobacco users started at teens. During these adolescent years, major changes in the brain occur, including those involved with regulating the effects of drugs and other stimuli.

Teen treated for mobile addiction
A teenager has been sent to counselling by her family doctor after she became addicted to calls and text messages.
Catherine Ward, 19, asked for help because she would rather spend money on top-up cards than food, and sends around 1,600 texts per month. She said: "When I hear my phone beeping I am all smiles. When I don't have any credit left I become depressed. I check where my phone is every two minutes." Experts have said Catherine may actually be addicted to her phone. Vote How many txts do u send? Enter Big spender She sends around 50 texts a day, and makes about 20 calls. Psychologist Professor mark Griffiths told reporters: "It's like the first flush of love; when you receive an email or text, you feel good." At first, Catherine's doctor told her to just put the phone in a cupboard on silent, but she couldn't keep away from it. She spends most of her cash on the mobile, and scrounges money from friends and family to cover her habit.

Drug Use Among Teens Continues to Decline
Christmas is upon us and with the New Year just around the corner there is much to celebrate around the country, including the fact that 600,000 less teens are using drugs as compared to 2001 Last week the results of the 2004 Monitoring the Future Survey were released with mostly good news. Overall drug use among teens declined another 7 percent, now making it a combined 17 percent over the last three years. The national survey is conducted by the University of Michigan and is overseen by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) in an effort to measure drug, alcohol and cigarette use and related attitudes among 8th, 10th and 12th grade students across the country.

Oz teen's crime spree financed mobile phone addiction
By John Leyden Published Thursday 5th August 2004 13:46 GMT An Australian judge has warned of the possible arrival of a disturbing new trend of teenagers stealing goods to finance their addiction to mobile phones. The warning came as the judge sentenced a 17-year-old thief to two years and three months on probation for a series of robberies. Brisbane District Court heard the youth, whilst still a juvenile, was involved in a gang that stole A$30,000 in cash and goods. The unnamed Brisbane teenager pleaded guilty in July 2003 to breaking and entering into a clothing store to steal A$3,000 and one count of burglary involving the theft of A$15,000 in cash and A$12,000 in jewellery from a safe in a house. At a sentencing hearing this week, defence barrister David Kent said the teenager had used proceeds from his crime to pay his mobile phone bill
