Adolescent Substance Abuse
Being a teenager and raising a teenager are individually, and collectively, enormous challenges. For many teens, illicit substance use and abuse become part of the landscape of their teenage years. Although most adolescents who use drugs do not progress to become drug abusers, or drug addicts in adulthood, drug use in adolescence is a very risky proposition. Even small degrees of substance abuse (for example, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants) can have negative consequences. Typically, school and relationships, notably family relationships, are among the life areas that are most influenced by drug use and abuse.

Teens Getting Help
Jason and Brent have been best friends since kindergarten. Now that they're in high school, they're drifting apart. It's not because they're in different classes, it's because Brent has noticed some changes in Jason. His grades have slipped, he's moody, he doesn't talk to his old friends, and he rarely shows up for practice. Brent is aware that Jason has been doing drugs and he's worried that Jason has become addicted. Defining an addiction is tricky, and knowing how to handle one is even harder - keep reading to find out more about addiction. What Are Substance Abuse and Addiction?
The difference between substance abuse and addiction is very slight. Addiction begins as abuse, or using a substance like marijuana or cocaine. You can abuse a drug (or alcohol ) without having an addiction. For example, just because Sara smoked weed a few times doesn't mean that she has an addiction, but it does mean that she's abusing a drug - and that could lead to an addiction. People can get addicted to all sorts of substances. When we think of addiction, we usually think of alcohol or illegal drugs. But people become addicted to medications, cigarettes, even glue! And some substances are more addictive than others: Drugs like crack or heroin are so addictive that they may only be used once or twice before the user loses control.

The treatment approach at Addington House is based on the understanding that drug and alcohol dependence can best be treated if the complexity of the condition is acknowledged. This means taking into consideration the interactive nature of cultural, social, psychological, physiological, and genetic factors . Thus, Addington House is a non-medical facility aimed at treating and detoxing its clients through a behavioural and a cognitive approach. Therefore, we do not accept clients who are on the methadone maintenance program. The approaches used are designed to promote changes in thinking, behaviour, feelings, emotions, reactions, and to increase self-worth. As well, we enable residents to seek out and utilise treatment support systems, including the House itself, their fellowship sponsors, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous. We view lifestyle change including abstinence as the cornerstone of our residents’ recovery, given the severity of the dependence they exhibit. Our role is to help the residents achieve and maintain a substance-free state, therefore improving their overall quality of life. We provide the residents with a warm, family-like atmosphere and a comfortable style of living to enhance their motivation towards recovery.

A family's struggle against addiction
Can Carrick Forbes' parents save her from heroin? And will Carrick save herself?
Ann Curry
Profile For years, Thom and Dierdre Forbes have been consumed by a desperate struggle to save their daughter's life: 19-year-old Carrick got started with drug addiction after she dropped out of high school. Two summers ago, Carrick was living in a downtown New York apartment with her boyfriend,  40 minutes by train but a world away from her parents home in Hastings-on-Hudson, an affluent suburb of New York. Her father, Thom Forbes and her mother, Deirdre, both 52, knew where their daughter was living. They knew she was an addict, but what they didn't know was how to stop her. Over the next year, they would confront the ugly truth that their precious little girl had turned into a hardened junkie. And in the year to come, they would grapple with a heart-wrenching dilemma: To save Carrick, they might have to turn their backs on her at her most vulnerable moment , even if it meant she might die in the process.

Give Me 5 Good Reasons Beat Their Butts Q: Is it possible to try drugs without becoming addicted? Some of my friends do X before a rave and they seem to have such a blast! I want to have the same good time but am scared of becoming addicted . My father is a recovering alcoholic and I know from Alateen that addiction runs in families. Is it OK to experiment just a little? A: There are lots of issues to address in this question, but I will start with the easiest part to answer. It seems you want somebody to tell you it is "OK" for you to try drugs, and I can't and won't do that. I will say that it is an unfortunate fact of the teen years that drug and/or alcohol experimentation is the norm , not the exception. For most

teen drug addiction has become a serious issue for parents in America. We are focused on help for teens with drug addiction.

Teen Drug Addiction
The life decisions we make currently in our individual lives ultimately will effect, be it better or for worse, the futures of our lives. For instance one who neglects to learn how to read will be handicapped by their inability to read for the rest of their life until they learn to read. Lack of curbing problems while they are still in their growth stage can be tremendously more difficult to curb when the problems have reached their maturity. For these reasons teens are at a unique time in their lives to be able to change, if they are in the right situation with enough leverage for a significant amount of time As their drug/alcohol use will ultimately still be in the growth stage.
One of the best reasons to get a help for teens while they are still teenagers, beyond being a very formidable time in a childs life, is the consequences of inaction upon future generations. Statistics have shown that instances of teen drug addiction run in long chains from parents to children. This is why now is the time to either break the chain of teen drug addiction or stop it from forming. No amount of hard work, money, sacrifice is worth more than breaking a chain of substance abuse or preventing one from forming.

Internet Addiction May Mask Teen Depression The more depressed an adolescent is, the more time he or she will spend on the Internet, says researcher Sang Kyu Lee, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Hallym University in Chunchon, Korea. His study, presented here Monday at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, included 425 middle-school students. All were given a test of Internet addiction that asked such questions as whether you feel preoccupied with the Internet, whether you repeatedly make unsuccessful efforts to cut back on use, and whether your online travels are a means of escaping from problems. So a bunch of teens are going through the normal ups and downs of being a teenager and turn to socializing or gameplaying on the Internet for comfort or distraction. This is news? Feh. Drug addiction , or substance dependence is the compulsive use of drugs, to the point where the user has no effective choice but to continue use. This phenomenon has occurred to some degree throughout recorded history (see "opium"), though modern agricultural practices, improvements in access to drugs, and advancements in biochemistry have exacerbated the problem significantly in the 20th century with the introduction of purified forms of active biological agents, and with the synthesis of hitherto unknown substances, such as methamphetamine and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). While "addiction" has been replaced by "dependency" as a clinical term, the terms are used interchangeably here.

Teen Sex Addiction Sex addiction is not restricted to any age group, but it seems to often get rooted during the teen years. We wanted to address the teens out there in the hopes that they will join the growing numbers of people breaking free of addiction. This page is written primarily to teens who are interested in living to please God. If you do not know God, but are interested in learning about him, please visit our Peace with God page. The habits you form and the thought patterns you practice during your teen years are setting the foundations for the rest of your life. Pornography and other "sexually-charged" material cement unforgettable memories in your mind that will affect your future marriage and sex life. It will also corrupt your everyday thought patterns and how you relate to people. Other consequences can include:
  • Grieving God's Spirit Giving the devil a foothold to oppress you Curses on you, your partner and your future children Spiritual confusion Emotional confusion Unbridled pursuit of lust and perversion
These are just a few of the many possible consequences that could affect your body, mind and spirit. Please see

Family-Based Treatment Programs Can Reduce Adolescent Drug Abuse Many factors influence adolescent drug abuse. Peer relationships; family, school, and neighborhood environments; and social or cultural norms can each act as protective factors or can put adolescents at increased risk. NIDA-supported researchers are developing and evaluating a variety of treatments designed to address the range of influences that play a role in adolescent drug abuse. In a study that compared three treatment approaches, researchers have found that Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT), which involves individual therapy and family therapy, produced better treatment outcomes than did Adolescent Group Therapy (AGT) or Multifamily Educational Intervention (MEI), a treatment delivered in sessions involving more than one family.
