Teen Addiction ... real life struggles Natalie Eagle
I'm 16, a junior in high school, and an ex-smoker. I don't even remember why I started smoking. I probably picked it up from my older sister. I started when I was 13 years old. Somewhere in between those years I quit for 3 months with a little help from the patch. Obviously it didn't work because I kept smoking. Only instead of going back to cigarettes, I went to cloves and bidi's, which I later learned are more addictive. I had many reasons to quit smoking. I got bad headaches, it was hard to breath, and I was diagnosed with macular degeneration, which is an eye disease. I've read many pamphlets that said the risk of early blindness is increased in smokers who have macular degeneration. That had to be just about the best reason I needed to stop. I quit on October 27, 1998, and I still haven't given in, to smoking again even though itís a big temptation. I'm pretty sure this time it's for good.
Teresa Eagle
I'm a 17 year old girl who used to socially smoke, or so I thought. A couple of months before my freshman year I decided to try smoking. It didn't taste that bad. I should have stopped there but I didn't. I remember telling myself that I would not let myself get addicted. I thought, I just wouldn't smoke enough to get addicted. That's the trick! Contrary to what I thought, a few cigarettes were enough to get addicted.
Rita Romero
I started smoking when I was 13 years old. I remember the experience well; it was a hot boring summer day. I sat behind the shed in my backyard while my brother watched and laughed as I inhaled deeply and coughed, feeling like my lungs might burst. As much as that feeling bothered me, it also felt good. I felt older, and more confident as I began to get the hang of it. I felt a rush knowing that my mom and dad could show up anytime and see what I was doing. I was taking a risk.

ARTICLE TOOLS Find similar articles Toggle highlighting EDITORIAL: Teen Gambling: The Invisible Addiction Last year, a 19-year-old youth from a small Iowa town, unable to face his large gambling losses, penned a short note, saying, "I'm out of control." Then he killed himself. Last spring, three New Jersey high-schoolers were arrested for running a $6,500 per week sports betting operation. In another case, a 16-year-old paid off his gambling debts by turning his girlfriend into a prostitute. These and other published accounts illustrate how exorbitant a price American teens are paying for our ill-fated social experiment with legal gambling. As more teens are being drawn into the culture of chance, gambling is influencing American society in deep and unexpected ways. Robert Goodman's new book "The Luck Business," while mostly an economic analysis of the gambling explosion, spells out how the pervasive worship of Lady Luck—on riverboat casinos, televised live lottery drawings, and at tempting theme-park casinos—alters our perspective on life. The idea that "hard work pays off" is now believed by only one of three people surveyed. In the 1960s, nearly 60 percent believed in the work ethic. We can count on this attitudinal sea change to affect our youth (and our nation's future).

    Adolescent Substance Abuse
B eing a teenager and raising a teenager are individually, and collectively, enormous challenges. For many teens, illicit substance use and abuse become part of the landscape of their teenage years. Although most adolescents who use drugs do not progress to become drug abusers, or drug addicts in adulthood, drug use in adolescence is a very risky proposition. Even small degrees of substance abuse (for example, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants) can have negative consequences. Typically, school and relationships, notably family relationships, are among the life areas that are most influenced by drug use and abuse. One of the most telling signs of a teen's increasing involvement with drugs is when drug use becomes part of the teen's daily life. Preoccupation with drugs can crowd out previously important activities, and the manner in which the teen views him or her self may change in unrealistic and inaccurate directions. Friendship groups may change, sometimes dramatically, and relationships with family members can become more distant or conflictual. Further bad signs include more frequent use or use of greater amounts of a certain drug, or use of more dangerous drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines, or heroin. Persistent patterns of drug use in adolescence are a sign that problems in that teen's environment exist and need to be addressed immediately.

    Teen Drug Abuse
Here are some facts about kids and drug use: Forty percent of U.S. teens say they expect to use a drug in the future. One out of every five kids in eighth grade has already tried marijuana. Use of substances such as marijuana and inhalants can result in social consequences (e.g., failing in school) and physical consequences such as reduced stamina and fitness or damage to the lungs and brain. Teens who smoke cigarettes are more likely to drink alcohol. Teens who smoke and drink are more likely to use marijuana. And those who use all three are more likely to use other illicit drugs. Long-term studies show that use of other illicit drugs among youth almost never occurs unless they have first used marijuana.
