Homeschool Slaying the Dragons of Teen Addiction Written by Denise George HomeLife The Tobacco Dragon Most adults know that tobacco use is addictive and dangerous, yet many fail to confront their teens because of their own smoking habits. Some rationalize that tobacco is not as dangerous as other drugs. They are wrong. Smoking can destroy a healthy body and can lead to other substance abuse. Janice knew Melinda had no idea how addictive nicotine is. She had watched her father try to quit smoking for 40 years without success. Later that week, after hours of prayer, reflection, and research, Janice wrote the following letter to Melinda: Dear Melinda: I am writing this letter because I love you. You are a beautiful young woman with a strong, healthy body. I have prayed for you since before you were born. I have done everything in my power to keep you safe and healthy. I cannot now allow you to hurt yourself with tobacco. Most adult smokers started smoking as teenagers. Even though tobacco companies deny they target teens, teenagers are their most important customers. In fact, according to some estimates, more than 3,000 teenagers in the United States become regular smokers every day.

My Top Addiction Sites
Before I start with my favorite addiction sites, let me tell you a little about me, and why I would be listing my favorite addiction sites here on well.com. The first thing you should know is I work on web sites, specifically addiction sites. I optimize, create content for and design sites for addiction treatment and rehabilitation. Although I really enjoy what I do, I have not yet had a place where I could say, "These are what I believe to be the best addiction treatment sites on the web..."
Why? Because I have to approach every site from an ambiguous point of view and try to make each one better than the last. Some times this is not possible, but there is an interesting lesson in behind why it cannot always be done. Some background to the challenge... First, at any given time there is a finite amount of addiction information present, and this information can only be rewritten by a limited number of treatment center sites or rehabilitation sites before there aren't any 'new' descriptions to use... Second, there are only a certain number of ways you can creatively describe an addiction treatment program, or addiction treatment center in 800 words or less. Third, when working on someone's website it is almost as if I am working on a part the designer and creator personally. They have put their effort and thoughts into something I am asking them to change and for many this is tough.

Excerpts from: Teen Addiction to Nicotine Hard to Measure By Andrew Holtz, Reuters [08/10/00 CHICAGO (Reuters Health) - In order to battle teen smoking, it is important to know when teenage smokers cross over from
experimentation to tobacco dependence or addiction; but that point is hard to determine, according to presentations made here
Wednesday at the 11th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. Dr. Raymond Niaura of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, pointed out that just because a teenager smokes does
not mean he or she is dependent on tobacco or nicotine. ``One potential problem with tobacco use as a marker for dependence is that patterns of use by adolescents are remarkably
variable and unstable, difficult to measure with fine degrees of precision and may not be of great prognostic value in terms of
predicting future entrenched tobacco involvement,'' he explained.

Strong Maternal Bond Effective in Preventing Teen Addiction

The international study involved 4,000 teenagers in England, Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The participants were questioned about their use of marijuana, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, tranquilizers, and alcohol. In addition, the teens were asked to complete questionnaires that asked about their relationships with their parents and grandparents, the extent of their supervision after school, and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.
The researchers determined that the rate of alcohol and other drug use among teens living with both parents and having a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing, the rate increased to 32 percent.
The study further showed that more than 42 percent of teens living with one parent and lacking a strong relationship with their mother used alcohol or other drugs.

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters)
Sleepless toddlers are more likely to grow into troubled teens who smoke, abuse alcohol and use illegal drugs, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday. The study, which involved only boys, suggests that some as-yet unknown brain mechanism may be involved in both sleeplessness and a tendency to addiction, the researchers at the University of Michigan Health System said. The finding does not mean that poor sleep causes later addiction problems, stressed University of Michigan psychiatry professor Dr. Kirk Brower. "Our finding sees early childhood sleep disturbances as a marker, or predictor, for early use of drugs and alcohol in adolescence, not a predetermined trajectory," Brower said in a statement.
Overall, a third of the children were reported to have had a sleep problem in early childhood, either trouble sleeping, overtiredness, or both. By age 12 to 14, about 32 percent of the boys had started drinking alcohol, and 40 percent said they had been drunk at least once. About 10 percent regularly smoked cigarettes, and 17 percent had used at least one kind of illicit drug. The link between sleep problems and substance abuse held true even after depression, aggression, attention problems and parental alcoholism were taken into account, Wong's team said. "It appears to indicate some shared neurobiological dysfunction whose details we don't yet know," said Robert Zucker, director of the research center where the work was done.

You'll hear everything there is to hear about alcohol, ecstacy, speed (meth, crystal), coke, heroin, inhalents, smoking....
So, like, what's the REAL story about drugs and alcohol? (And alcohol is definitely a drug, too...just like nicotine is!)
Here, you can learn straight facts about what each drug does, what it doesn't do, and the danger of each...and often, there is real danger....
People do drugs and drink, because, to start, it makes them feel good... or erases feelings...but that's only the beginning.... ALL drugs change the chemicals we have naturally in our brains...and when the brain starts changing, adding to, subtracting from its own chemicals, that's a problem because those chemicals control our feelings and actions.
Can some people deal with alcohol and other drugs better than others?
You bet!
How about me?

Over 5 million people under the age of 18 die each year from a smoking-related disease according to the Center for Disease Control. The Office of Student Wellness within the Santa Fe Public Schools, is hoping to lower that number. It has been helping teens quit smoking through N-O-T (Not On Tobacco), a science based smoking cessation program.
This program, once run in the Teen Health Center, has moved and now operates out of a space each school provides. The N-O-T program is taught during school hours, but runs on a rotating schedule; alternating periods with each class. This way students are not charged with an absence when they attend a meeting.
Tobacco Court is another new program that began with Harr, Mann-Lev, Alice Sealey, the director of Teen Court and Judge Francis Gallegos. An appearance at Tobacco Court is required of students who are caught smoking on campus for the second time. While tobacco court acts as a punishment, it is meant to be an informative process.
Tobacco Court first began when Judge Gallegos was approached by Harr and Mann-Lev about establishing a cessation program within a courthouse setting. Gallegos had been researching smoking for the past year, when this concept was proposed.

And with surveys showing that the majority of smokers begin while they are teenagers, New York lawmakers are now mulling legislation that will raise the legal age for buying tobacco from 18 to 19. State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr.,( R- Long Island) proposed a bill to prohibit selling of tobacco products, herbal cigarettes, rolling papers, or pipes to individuals under age 19. As in the current law, individuals would be required to present photo identification cards in order to purchase cigarettes.
