Cell Phones the Newest Teen Addiction
A new report claims that cigarettes are slowly being replaced by an equally addictive obsession - the mobile phone. Among some of the reports findings:
  • A rise in mobile phone use during the late 1990s coincided with a decline in smoking among 15-year-olds. The prevalence of smoking fell to 23% in 1999 from 30% in 1996, the same year mobile phone use skyrocketed among 15- to 17-year-olds
"We hypothesise that the fall in youth smoking and the rise in ownership of mobile phones among adolescents are related," the authors write. They suggest that many teens cannot afford to sustain both habits and prefer the cutting-edge technology over the smoking. They also note that the device is associated with many of the traits that attract teens to cigarettes:
  • a sense of individuality and sociability a desire to rebel the need to bond with friends, the team notes.

True Stories of Teen Addiction
Two women who hit rock-bottom are climbing back up. As told to Kathleen Jacobs What's your image of a drug user? Probably not the easygoing girl next door or a busy mom of two. You might be surprised to learn who is secretly fighting the lure of drugs. Consider the facts: An estimated 14 million Americans currently use illicit drugs, according to the most recent National Household Survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The same research found that 9.5% of teen girls use drugs and more than 30% of all women (ages 12 and up) say that they have tried drugs at some point. Just like Zoey in our new Lifetime movie, many young women start dabbling with addictive substances as a way to deal with the pressures of their teen years. "We cannot predict who uses drugs," says Terry Horton, M.D., medical director at Phoenix House, a national substance abuse treatment program. For some, their abuse will persist with serious consequences. But there is hope. A five-year study by SAMHSA determined that treatment reduces illicit drug use by 43%. Longer periods of treatment can improve the odds. Still, the most important factors in successful recovery, says Dr. Horton, are family support and involvement. Meet two women who overcame their addictions and are rebuilding their lives.
Vicki H., 39, lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with her two children. Drug-free for nine years, she has a master's degree in social work and is employed at Chrysalis House, a long-term residential substance abuse and alcohol rehabilitation center. This is her story:

True Stories of Teen Addiction
Two women who hit rock-bottom are climbing back up. (Continued from page 1. Stacey Beck, 26, a former administrative assistant, is from Bayshore, Long Island in New York. She currently lives in Phoenix House, a drug treatment facility, and spends weekends with her family. This is her story:
Now I've been here a year, and I'm in the final phase of treatment. It's called reentry, and I'm going to get a job and pay off my debts. I still think about drugs, but I have to be stronger. I learned that you can do things sober and still have fun, such as going dancing or eating out. I play volleyball. I go to NA [Narcotics Anonymous]. I keep occupied to stay strong. I never thought I'd be able to get this far. I figured I'd be on drugs the rest of my life. I feel good now; I'm proud of myself. I was even asked to speak at a fund-raiser. Afterward, a woman told me that my story was inspiring. I felt so good that day. I felt as if I had finally accomplished something.

But when that exuberant spirit of adolescence gets derailed by alcohol and drugs, something quite different waits around the corner. Teens who abuse or become addicted to chemical substances suffer more than the harmful physical effects of drugs. They expose themselves to the most serious misfortunes that can befall young people: depression, loss of driving privileges, public humiliation, arrest and jail, unprotected sex or sexual assault, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and death by overdose, accident, suicide, or homicide. community abuse drugs ... wise choices Chapter 6: Prevention of Teen Addiction IT MAY BE that the most promising aspect of teen addiction is not treatment but rather prevention. Impressive successes in reducing use and addiction have provided useful models for prevention programs. Primarily, researchers now believe the key to preventing chemical addiction among teens and young adults is to delay use of nicotine, alcohol, and drugs. If use is delayed until adulthood, or at least age sixteen, the rates of addiction drop dramatically. Delayed initiation and use are achieved with a number of successful strategies. First, factors that seem to protect teens from drug abuse can be encouraged. Second, effective education programs and creative media campaigns can help prepare young people to make wise choices for themselves about addictive substances. Parental and community support for positive choices and laws that make it easier for teens to avoid drugs are also highly effective.

by: Dr. Michael Newdow In the preface of her book, psychologist and family therapist Nikki Babbitt reveals a personal stake in the issues that concern her: as a mother, she struggled with the addiction of her own child. Understandably, perhaps, this leads Babbitt to emphasize the extent to which teenage substance abuse does not spare any sector of society, regardless of family situation, parenting techniques or school situation.

Marijuana Abuse and Addiction
Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. A dry, shredded green/brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa, it usually is smoked as a cigarette (joint, nail), or in a pipe (bong). It also is smoked in blunts, which are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with marijuana, often in combination with another drug. Use also might include mixing marijuana in food or brewing it as a tea.
Inhalants-Addiction and Death in a Can

Inhalants are breathable chemical vapors that produce psychoactive mind-altering effects.. A variety of products common in the home and in the workplace contain substances that can be inhaled. Many people do not think of these products, such as spray paints, glues, and cleaning fluids, as drugs because they were never meant to be used to achieve an intoxicating effect.

Home Teen Drug Use and Teen Drinking Teen Drug Use and Teen Drinking also known as Substance Abuse amongst teens and even children. With today's world, kids have access to many different substances that can be addictive and damaging. If you suspect your child is using drugs or drinking alcohol, please seek help for them as soon as possible. Drug testing is always helpful, but not always accurate. We get calls constantly, that a child is "only" smoking pot. Unfortunately in most cases, marijuana can lead to more severe drugs, and marijuana is considered an illegal drug. Smoking marijuana is damaging to the child's body, brain and behavior. Even though marijuana is not considered a narcotic, most teens are very "hooked" on it. Alcohol is not any different with today's teens. Like adults, some teens use the substances to escape their problems, however they don't realize that it is not an escape but rather a deep dark hole. Some teens use substances to "fit in" with the rest of their peers. This is when a child really needs to know that they don't need to "fit in" if it means hurting themselves. Using drug and alcohol is harming them. Especially if a teen is taking prescribed medication. The combination can bring out the worse in a person. Attention Parents!

Printable Version Download PDF Cite this Page One of the causes of teenage addiction most commonly cited by health specialists is the tendency of young people to underestimate the risk of dependence associated with drug experimentation. According to these experts, teenagers on the verge of adulthood are naturally prone to engage in risky behavior. Smoking, drinking, and drug use may seem “adult” to youths who are not mature enough to understand that such behavior poses a threat to their health and well-being, argue the specialists. Many teenagers discover the risks of substance use only after suffering the adverse effects of addiction. Leah, a sixteen-year-old smoker from Washington, D.C., says she did not understand the dangers when she began smoking. She expresses an attitude typical among teens, saying, “When I first started [smoking] I figured, okay, one cigarette is not going to hurt me.” Leah admits that she is now addicted, and she confesses that she has tried to quit several times but has been unable to do so. Newsweek , she states, “There’s no doubt in my mind that cigarettes are a gateway drug. About five months after I started smoking I started doing drugs.” Hall’s experience with addiction began when she started smoking cigarettes in the fifth grade.
