Technical Writing and the Macintosh
The Invisible Writer
Technical writing is one of those activities that historians of technology have almost completely ignored. In a period in which "the literary turn" has raised the interest level in all kinds of textual production, this lacuna is striking. In accounts of the development of the Macintosh, technical writers figure hardly at all. The conventional wisdom is that documentation had no significant effect on the computer itself. Like some other important but invisible activities designing the mouse , manufacturing computers technical writing just happens. But looking at documentation practices in Apple, and the role that technical writers played on the Macintosh project, reveals than the conventional wisdom is wrong. The technical documentation for the Macintosh was written as the system software was being written: consequently, the documentation and development processes were more tightly connected than in most projects, where (as Chris Espinosa put it) documentation is done "after the fact.. almost [as] an effort in investigative journalism." Further, the success of the Macintosh as a platform depended in no small part on lining up companies and developers to write for the system; to do that, they needed to understand how it worked. Inside Macintosh made that possible.

Technical Writing
by Kraig Keyes Most technical writers collect a vast amount of information from a variety of sources during the writing project.  These sources include the library, Internet, meetings, and interviews with subject matter experts.
My entire method of maintaining a data library changed when I became a Palm user in early 2000.  Since implementing a "virtual" filing cabinet on my handheld, I rarely print or copy information.  Instead, information is copied into my handheld, usually via desktop software applications that synchronize with my Palm device.  Subsequent retrieval is quick and efficient. To my knowledge, there are no specialized Palm OS software titles specifically developed for technical writers.  Instead, existing titles are leveraged for their use in managing writing projects.  Some titles are supercharged outliners, while others are journal or "hyperlinking" applications.  In addition to the document readers, graphic viewers, and text entry software titles, I've included sections for time management and project management since both are important elements of any project.

Building a Technical Writing Portfolio
by Linnea Dodson Technical writing is one of the few careers in which building a portfolio can be almost impossible. Novice writers have little experience and experienced writers are often muzzled by confidentiality clauses. Fortunately, employers know this. Unfortunately, you still need a portfolio. The solution is to show your skills by building writing samples based on common, household items. No example is too small or too silly, not in a field in which a standard interview request is "Describe how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich." If you are applying for a job that involves clarifying a lot of industry jargon, start by opening your medicine chest and reaching for the aspirin — not to cure the headaches of job hunting, but to read the label. Warning labels and the legal fine print attached to drug or sweepstakes advertisements are fertile ground on which to practise jargon-busting. You'll impress any employer if you can reduce the word count while raising the comprehensibility of all that miniscule print. On the other hand, if you are looking for a job that involves how-to writing, walk through your home and pick three things that needed to be assembled and three things that plug into the wall. Without looking at the original instructions, write new assembly or installation guides. If at all possible, add appropriate bonus features: recipes for the microwave, instructions on the best way to position stereo speakers, and so on. Definitely include directions on how to program the VCR.

  • Are you a creative and talented writer who just can't seem to make a living [yet!] purely from writing?
  • Do you have abilities in any technical arena? In other words, are you a repairperson, electrician, or a computer operator/support person?
  • Are you a teacher, instructor, or trainer?
  • Are you unemployed or underemployed at your present job and looking for a better career?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you owe it to yourself to consider a career in technical writing. Technical writers earn a great living! Technical writing involves creating the documentation for the products and services we use. Just think about it. At the least, every device and process, from hairdryers to laptops, requires a user guide, documentation during the development phase, and training manuals to teach others. As technology explodes, the need for documentation grows exponentially! Although the difficult state of the economy make all professions leaner now, there will always be a need for documentation. That's what makes this field so much in demand, and why new writers, with an aptitude for this field, are always welcome.

Common Errors in Technical Writing John Owens
LaTeX is a wonderful system for text processing. However, in reviewing and reading many papers, I often see the same errors, over and over again. Especially for my students ... please don't ever give me your paper to read that has any of these errors. A wonderful book for the details of technical writing is Mary-Claire van Leunen's "A Handbook for Scholars" , currently in its second edition from Oxford University Press.
  • Number one pet peeve: Indicating "and others" in citations. If you cite one author in body text, it should be "AuthorOne". Two authors: "AuthorOne and AuthorTwo". Three authors: "AuthorOne, AuthorTwo, and AuthorThree" (although in practice I think "AuthorOne et al." is common). Four or more authors: "AuthorOne et al.". "et al." stands for "et alia". It does NOT have a period after "et" and DOES have one after "al". It is NOT italicized or underlined (van Leunen, p. 27: "Write it without either underlining or italics.").
  • Number two pet peeve: Using cites as words. van Leunen again: "Brackets are not words. A bracketed number is just a pointer, not a word. Never, ever, use a bracketed number as if it were the name of an author or a work." (p. 20). So instead of "A similar strategy is described in [15]."), use instead "A similar strategy is discussed by AuthorOne et al. [15]". The way you can get this right in your head is considering a journal that does cites as superscripts (like the old Graphics Hardware style). It looks really stupid to say "A similar strategy is discussed by

How To Break into Technical Writing
Whether you're attempting to become a technical writer at 21 or 41, the steps are the same. Statistics show that the best way to find a job is network, network, network. Go to association meetings, like STC (Society for Technical Communication) (www.stc-va.org/home.html) (International Office: 703.522.4114; Email: stc@stc-va.org) and talk to as many people as you can. Introduce yourself and tell them honestly what you want. Ask them a lot of questions about how they did it. Everyone started somewhere. Find out which companies tend to hire the more junior or intern writers or editors/proofreaders. Ask each person you speak to for another referral. You're looking for direct job leads or information that could lead you to a job. Look at it as solving a mystery. Just keep talking to people. Even once you begin calling companies direct, ask for other leads. People have friends who have moved on to other companies.
    Company Research
Identify which companies you'd ideally like to work for by going to the library, going online or using one of many other resources, such as Hoover's Database (www.hoovers.com) or Thomas Register (www.thomasregister.com) or CorpTech (www.corptech.com) or Upside Magazine (www.upside.com) or Red Herring Magazine (www.redherring.com).
