Succeeding as a Technical Writer
by Michael Knowles
I love writing any kind of writing. Technical writing happens to be my bread and butter, and I've become successful at it. I call what I do guerilla writefare : the practice of writing efficiently, effectively, and sanely in high-stress environments. In this weekly column, I'll tell you how to be successful, too, and how to maintain that success even in tight job markets. I'll start with a list of rules that have served me in good stead over my entire career. Some are common sense, and others may sound a little extreme or radical to your ears. That's okay. They've worked for me. Take what you need, and leave the rest.

How to Land a Career in Technical Writing
By GWENDOLYN BRADLEY Harriet Whitlock became interested in the Web when she was a graduate student and teaching assistant in the English department at Rutgers University. She designed a writing course with cyber communities as its theme and developed a Web site for the course. One thing led to another. First she was asked to help maintain the English department Web site, then to teach department staff members how to make and support Web pages. Next an ex-student offered ALSO SEE: A guide to Web resources on careers in technical writing her some freelance work marketing and then maintaining a Web site. Ms. Whitlock is now A.B.D. in English and a full-time staff member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she writes Web site content, training materials, documentation that allows departments to maintain their own Web sites, course handouts, and academic computing-policy statements. Her job draws on several skills she gained in graduate school including "problem-solving, making information accessible, ordering ideas, researching, sounding authoritative even when you don't feel it, focusing for a long time on a single task, working under pressure, making deadlines."

What is a technical writer? To answer the question self-referentially, a technical writer is a person who writes technical documents, from articles for medical journals to project specifications for machinery. Many are employed in the software industry. There are no globally recognized certifications for technical communication (as, for instance, Microsoft Novell , and other companies offer to programmers and other information technology professionals), technical writers generally have college degrees in English or Communication, or they may have education in the fields in which they write.
What can a technical writer do?
Technical writers can describe how something works, or how to use it, in a way that is easily understood. In addition to knowing how to use good document organization skills, technical writers analyze the target audience for a document, and write accordingly. For instance, a medical journal article may use highly technical medical jargon, assuming that the target audience physicians undertand medical terminology. On the other hand, the online Help accompanying a tax program marketed to individual return filers would not assume knowledge of accounting jargon. Depending on the results of audience analysis, the online Help may not even assume knowledge of basic tasks performed on a computer, such as opening files and closing windows.

ONLINE TECHNICAL WRITING: INSTRUCTIONS The focus for this assignment is one of the most important of all uses of technical writing-instructions. Instructions are those step-by-step explanations of how to do something: how to build, operate, repair, or maintain things. The assignment also focuses on description, definition, or one of the other information structures that are common elements in technical writing. The content, organization, and format suggestions discussed in the information-structures section will give you a good foundation to write these documents.
Writing Instructions One of the most common and most important uses of technical writing is instructions. Instructions are some of the worst written documents you can find. Try to think of the last time that you tried to assemble something. Were the instructions as clear as they should be? Everyone has probably been a victim to badly written instructions. This guide may not be a fool-proof, guide to writing instructions, but it will show you what professionals consider the best techniques.
Good instruction writing not only requires these techniques but also the following: Clear, simple writing
