Hi, my name is Nancy Halligan and welcome to my technical writing website. I created this website as a short course to help students, teachers and beginner technical writers communicate complex ideas simply, while still keeping it lively and interesting. My website has eighteen easy to follow guidelines to help you write a technical report that is easy for your reader to read and understand, while not boring them to sleep. I have a page of recommended websites and organisations, and finally a small page on myself. If there is something you are specifically searching for you can now use my new website search engine. In the next few months I will be upgrading this facility so that it will be able to perform complex searches across all the internet's technical writing websites. Along with this new search engine I will also be adding a new area of technical writing examples including technical reports and manuals. If you have an example of your own that you think might be useful to other technical writers please email me so that I can include it. I will of course give credit to you.

Online Technical Writing: Instructions
The focus for this chapter is one of the most important of all uses of technical writinginstructions. As you know, instructions are those step-by-step explanations of how to do something: how to build, operate, repair, or maintain things. The assignment for this unit also focuses on description, definition, or one of the other information structures discussed in Appendix F . These are common elements in technical writing. Rather than documents type of their own, they more commonly appear as elements or parts of other documents, such as instructions in this case. However, you can imagine description, for example, being used heavily in reports on accidents, property appraisals, and product specifications. The content, organization, and format suggestions discussed in the information-structures section will give you a good foundation to write these other kinds of documents. In the assignment for this chapter, you actually write two assignments in one: a set of instructions and an information structure (such as description, definition, or other) integrated within those instructions. This scenario gives you experience with two key types of technical writing but in a way that saves two to three weeks in the semester. This enables you to have more time toward the end of the semester to work full time on your technical-report project. Be sure to check out the example instructions available with this chapter: The frames and nonframes versions work

Foreword
I began this document in 1978, when I was teaching undergraduate classes in electrical engineering and found that my students needed some guidance on grammar and style. I enlarged this document frequently during my ten years as a professor. During 1990-95, I shared this document with my colleagues in Germany who wanted to know more about style in American English. The favorable reaction of my former students and my German colleagues has encouraged me to post this document on the Internet, in the hope that it might be useful to a wider audience.

G.L. Kittredge and F.E. Farley: An Advanced English Grammar
originally published by Ginn in 1913, reprinted by AMS Press in New York City in 1972.
Teaching formal grammar became unfashionable in many schools in the USA in the 1970s, which has had disastrous consequences for the ability of professionals in the USA to produce erudite prose. The lack of modern reference books means that one must rely on old grammar books, like this one. This old book even contains conjugation of the verb to be for four tenses of the subjunctive mood. There are still some judges that use subjunctive mood for contrary-to-fact statements in writing their opinions, but use of the subjunctive seems to be rare in most other writings by American authors.

Understand the type of technical report you are writing. Technical reports come in all shapes and sizes, but they all share the same goal of communicating information clearly. Deciding what type of document you need to write is an important first step as it influences your approach. For example, the following demand different approaches. Reporting Research Findings
These documents describe the work done to gather information in the laboratory or field. They can be simple recording or data or more thorough and include: the problem or issue examined, the method or equipment used, the data collected and the implications.
Simple Technical Information Report
This document explains a technical subject. It has no aim other than to make sure readers understand the topic clearly. For example, a technical report on a investing in the futures market would probably explain how the market evolved, how it works, the specialist terms used and so on. A simple technical report for information does not put forward a view on the merits of investing in the market or have recommendations.
