Stories have been used to entertain, to teach moral lessons, to pass on personal family Is it OK for sports teams to use native images and names?

Unit: American Literature - Native American Stories Created By: Marty Sierra-Perry
Centennial High School, Champaign The tradition of storytelling in Native American communities serves many purposes. In most instances, these stories are meaningless without understanding the story's significance and purpose. Stories have been used to entertain, to teach moral lessons, to pass on personal family stories, and to teach tribal beliefs. Many stories wereand still arethe personal property of families. The extension activities we will complete during our study of Fools Crow include the following:
  • Students will read legends of the Blackfeet, the tribe of the novel, Fools Crow , by James Welch.
There are many sites that list native stories; however, few relate any background information about the significance of the story. The following Web site makes that connection and is a great story resource. Once you get to the site you may want to make copies of some of the stories and their background, in order to analyze them and relate them to the novel.
Blackfeet legends can be found at:

The Teacher's Guide is designed for students in grades 2-4. Open-ended activities and multilevel teaching strategies make the lesson plans ideal for classrooms in which some students are in the process of learning English and others are native English speakers. The activities build children's awareness and appreciation of the many cultures in America and encourage them to make connections to their own lives. The Teacher's Guide provides a complete teaching strategy for Season One of Postcards from Buster, including:
    • Teaching strategies and learning activities Reproducibles and indexes Lesson plans individually tailored for all 40 Season One episodes

This sport is played during P.E. classes and for lunch time activity. Objectives: To develop a better team net sport. Materials: A volleyball court and two indoor soccer goals (6 x 12 feet). Place the goals 8 to 10 feet behind each end of the court and centered. Service areas are on either side of the goals. Plan: Students should have good volleyball skills and a basic knowledge of both the side-out and rallypoint scoring systems of volleyball. This game is fast and furious. • Repetitive patterns
    • Familiar topic (for some children)
    • Simple sentence structure
    • Picture clues
    • Repetition of high utility words
Reader Challenges The amount of text on the page may overwhelm the beginning reader. Make sure to allow the child to get comfortable with the idea of complete sentences before attempting to introduce this book. The size of some of the words may seem a bit intimidating as well, so remind children to break the words up to help them sound out the word.

Some raise strong objections to this, declaring that the use of ethnicities as mascots is degading and offensive. Others hold fast to the existing mascots proclaiming that they are long-standing traditions. Numerous sports teams, both amateur and professional, have come face-to-face with protest over the past few years. Here students have the opportunity to look at both sides of the issue and engage in debate. Goals:
    • the learner will describe two differing sides of an issue the learner will develop a point of view and provide evidence to support it the learner will write a persuasive essay the learner will engage in oral debate to support his/her own viewpoint
Materials: World Wide Web Indians Are People Not Mascots American Indian Sports Team Mascots is a comprehensive listing of educator resources, state-by-state mascot info, a chronology, and articles that address this controversial issue. A wonderful resource, however the source of the site seems to be unavailable. Procedure: Students will read various articles and choose a specific situation to examine in greater detail. Each student will then present the specific case and write a persuasive essay about his/her opinion. Finally teams of students will engage in debates. If desired, the teacher may set up a mock hearing by a school board, council or a court so that the students may do role playing.
