    Text Type:
    Fact / Informational Text
    Reading Level:
    D
    Word Count:
    Pages
    Text Summary
The Team explains what each player on a baseball team does and why each player is needed. Because so many children regularly participate in extracurricular activities, they will be able to relate to and learn from this book. The idea of teamwork is strongly reinforced.
    Reader Supports
The Team incorporates a variety of reader supports:
    • Repetitive patterns
    • Familiar topic (for some children)
    • Simple sentence structure
    • Picture clues
    • Repetition of high utility words
    Reader Challenges
The amount of text on the page may overwhelm the beginning reader. Make sure to allow the child to get comfortable with the idea of complete sentences before attempting to introduce this book. The size of some of the words may seem a bit intimidating as well, so remind children to break the words up to help them sound out the word. If the child is not active in outdoor activities and sports, the concept of the book may be a totally new idea to him/her. The words associated with baseball may be a challenge if this is the case. Lesson Objectives Reading Strategies Children should use a variety of strategies to decode words and bring meaning to print. The targeted strategy for this lesson is: Going back and rereading.

The A SECTION gives the most important news of the day at the state, national, and international levels. A fast-breaking local news story may be in this section as well. Social studies teachers use this section to teach geographical concepts and history as it happens. Language arts teachers model newspaper writing to improve students' writing skills, to show comprehension of events, to insure clarity and accuracy in reporting, and to link with literary works. It also features the EDITORIAL PAGE with a multitude of opportunities to teach your students critical thinking skills such as differentiating between fact and opinion, understanding bias, problem-solving, and decision-making. Editorials, columns, and cartoons provide essential insight into the newspaper's philosophy and purpose. The WEATHER section appears on the last page of the local section and offers a wealth of science, geography, and math opportunities for teachers.

    • Computer (online access) Paper and pencil
    Lesson Duration: 20 - 30 minutes Objectives: Math - 111.23

    Activity:
Step 1: Go to the Texas Sports website http://www.texassports.com/mainpages/sw_pages/2003_04/m_times.pdf
Step 2: Discuss the statistics and what they mean. How do you know the distance? In what unit are the times given?
Step 3: Discuss the ratio of yards per second, feet per second, etc. What is that? Once they realize it is the speed, you can connect it to the formula Rate x Time = Distance. You can derive the ratio of Distance/Time.
Step 4: Use the following races and give the ratio and unit rate for each swimmer and be sure to label each:

    A Lifetime Sport
    – Team sports and games are fine, but it’s important to expose students to lifetime activities as well. Handball is one of the few lifetime sports that is fitness and skill related.
Size is No Advantage – You don’t have to be big to be good.
Opportunities for Competition – The United States Handball Association and its affiliated state and regional organizations sponsor age group tournaments for players from 9-and-under to 90-plus, a true lifetime of physical fitness.
Develops Both Sides of the Body – Unlike other individual court sports, both hands must be used. The skill development of both sides of the brain has shown to help young people in the classroom as well.
Easy to Teach – Handball is fun and the rules are simple. The game can be taught as a “cooperative” activity (no losers) or as a competitive sport.
Off-Season Conditioner – For coaches, handball is a great game for your athletes in the off season. Not only will it keep them I shape, it will develop quickness and fast reaction times.
