Origins

Handball is considered one of the oldest games in the history of sport. A few references in Homer's Odyssey provide evidence of a game similar to Handball, played on the island of the Faiakes (Corfu). Further evidence of a primitive version of Handball is also found on a marble plaque found at the Athens Acropolis, dating to about 600 B.C. In Roman years, the game then called "arpaston", spread to the people of Germany and France.
At the end of the 19th century, the modern form of Handball appeared in Denmark, Germany and Czechoslovakia, as a training exercise for gymnasts, and as a fitness tool for football players during their off season. Around 1910, the Swedes adopted regulations for handball that were similar to those of football.
In 1936, Handball made its debut to the public as an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games. It was held in an open stadium, with two teams of 11 players on each team. Handball was officially incorporated into Olympic Games in 1972. It was held in an indoor court measuring 20x40m with teams of seven players.
The Sport
Each team consists of seven players on the field and seven substitutes on the bench. An unlimited number of substitutions are allowed during the game. Two referees monitor the game. It takes place in an indoor sports hall on a court measuring 40 x 20 m. Goal posts, measuring 2 m high and 3 m wide, are placed at the centre of each end line. The players' objective is, by only using their hands, to put the ball into the goal of the opposing team. The team with the most goals wins.

In Seoul, South Korea, in 1988, they placed seventh; in 1992, in Barcelona, Spain, they placed sixth; and 1996, in Atlanta, they finished eighth. The team competed in 1984, in Los Angeles, by virtue of a home country automatic bid, and placed fourth. They did not qualify for the 2000 Sydney Olympics after a fourth-place finish in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada. Under Latulippe, the team has since been redirected with a grass roots program toward a youth movement. They also made SUNY Cortland their official training facility headquarters, relocating from Lake Placid. With a fresh team and a new site, the Olympic dream starts anew. There is Amanda Gillette, born and raised in Marathon. The 2003 SUNY Cortland graduate was a star in cross country as well as track and field.

``Team handball?'' ``Team handball?'' says Thornberry, shaking his head. ``I thought he was talking about a bunch of guys hitting a little black ball off a wall.'' He was talking about a game that has been described as ``water polo without the water'' and ``sort of like basketball, soccer and lacrosse all rolled into one.'' About a game for guys just like Thornberry - 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, 6 percent body fat, 35-inch vertical jump, a slingshot for an arm. Turned out the prof knew what he was talking about. Earlier this month, the 21-year-old West Point grad from Suffolk left for Atlanta hoping to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team handball squad. Team handball is not only the most misnamed game ever invented. It's also the best game Americans have never heard of. ``It's on TV for about 20 seconds every Olympic year,'' says Thornberry. Though an Olympic sport since 1976, team handball, which was invented in Europe, is still only played by six colleges and maybe a dozen ``clubs'' around the country. The game is played on a court slightly larger than a basketball court. There is a soccer-type goal at each end and seven players on a team, including the goalie. The game is divided into 25-minute halves. Teams average about 20 to 25 goals a game.

The Game
Team Handball combines the skills of running, jumping, catching, and throwing into a fast-moving, exciting game. Elements of soccer, basketball, hockey and water polo all can be seen in team handball. The basic objective of the game is to out maneuver the opponent by passing the ball quickly and then throw the ball past the defense and goalie to score.
History
Team handball has existed in the United States since 1959, but only in the last few years has it been recognized as something entirely different from the YMCA variety of 4 wall handball. The inclusion of team handball in the Olympics in 1972, and for women in 1976 in Montreal has given the sport more exposure. The sport originated in Europe in the late 1920's and is now second only to soccer in popularity. Team Handball is being played in 72 nations on 6 continents with more than 3 million players affiliated with the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Atlanta Team Handball players (left to right) Ryan Hansell, 19, of Marietta, Stephen Futral, 19, of Acworth, and Luqman Salam, 19, of Smyrna, join nine other Georgia players on the U.S. team that will play in the 2001 Men's Junior Pan American Championship April 4-8 in College Park, Ga. Until the Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996, these Cobb County athletes had never even heard of team handball.
Team Handball: So foreign, so familiar
Moving with the ball in my hand felt awkward, and seemed like it should be illegal. And that makes the Olympic sport of team handball kind of hard to describe. Cappelmann tried, though. "It's like soccer with your hands," he said. "It's like water polo without the water." As the practice went on, Cappelmann also likened aspects of the game to basketball, lacrosse, rugby and ice hockey. Team handball is an amalgam. It's an anomaly. "It's addicting," said 19-year-old Ryan Hansell, of Marietta, a wing on the US team. "Once you start playing, it gets in your blood." Team handball is fast-paced and physical. The indoor court is roughly 66 feet wide and 131 feet long, with goals on either end that are about half the size of those used in soccer. Two teams of seven players pass, dribble and shoot a leather ball about the size of large cantaloupe.

more than one type of handball
I suspect that there is more than one type of handball. For instance, there was a game played by French monks colled "jeu de paume" (supposed to translate "game of the palm (of the hand)", my French is rusty) that was played in a similar fasion to racketball and is believed to be a predecessor of modern tennis.
Ah, the text i wrote only pertains to the olympic sport. Please add entries for other sports called handball, if you have any info! Anders T¶rlind
That's right, there's more than one type of handball. The Olympic sport is usually referred to as 'Team handball', while there's another sport which involves single players. I believe the sport is somewhat similar to many racket games Jheijmans
I second that. I know of two other forms of handball which are not variations of the olympic sport. One similar to Squash except without the racquet. The other is played in school yards throughout Australia on grid of either 2 or 4 squares painted on concrete or bitumen. Sort of like a scaled down version of tennis with no racquets. You use a tennis ball and the ball must bounce in your square once on it's return to your oponent's square. Each of the four squares represent a ranking of King, Queen, Jack and Dunce. When someone is beaten, s/he is sent to dunce and all player s/he outranked move up a rank. The goal is to stay in King. If more than 4 players are present, only a 'King' is sent to dunce. Any other players would be sent off the court and a reserve player will start in dunce.
