History
Team handball is very popular in much of the world, but little known in North America. Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena , the Danish handbold , and the German Torball All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

The object of the game is to score the highest number of points by throwing the ball into the opponent's goal, which is 2 meters high and 3 meters wide. Competition
The game is played in 30-minute halves. The rapid, continuous play is marked by spectacular leaps and dives. Players may take three steps before and after a dribble. If not moving, the player may only hold the ball for three seconds; the player must then either move, score, or pass the ball to another team member. Meanwhile, the other team is trying to gain possession of the ball by either snatching it away or intercepting a pass. The goalie may use any part of the body to defend the goal. Both men and women compete separately during tournament style competition. After several days of preliminary rounds, finalists advance to the gold-medal game. News, History, and Fast Facts

The various international sports federations choose the disciplines, events, and sports for each of the Olympic Games. To qualify as an Olympic sport, that sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents. Sports widely practiced in at least 25 countries and on three continents may be included in the Winter Games. In the past, the host country occasionally has been allowed to include one or two demonstration sports. If there is enough interest, they may be selected as medal sports in future Games. For example, tennis and baseball were demonstration sports before becoming medal sports in the 1988 and 1992 Games, respectively. Check out More Sports for all the action!

Imagine taking the fast pace of basketball and the team play of soccer, put it on a court measuring 20 meters by 40 meters, add two goals about half the size of soccer goals, and a goal zone like the three-point circle that is off-limits to all but the goalie and you can imagine Team H andball . One goalie and six court players pass, dribble and shoot with a leather ball the size of a youth soccer ball. Youth games are two 15 minute periods, running time, free substitutions. Scores may reach into the 20's. Audiences are surprised by the amount of contact allowed before penalty and enjoy the fast breaks and leaping scoring styles. From Atlanta Team Handball

Few schools can proclaim themselves No. 1 in college athletics. While Michigan and Nebraska share the title in football, Emory is making a claim of its own in another sport-team handball. Team handball has not become an official NCAA sport, but this school year marked the debut of its sanctioned college league. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC), in conjunction with the NCAA, is working to enhance development at the college level in certain Olympic sports. The U.S. Team Handball Association successfully petitioned the USOC for a $500,000 grant to create the Southeast Team Handball Conference (SETHC), the first of its kind in the country. A total of eight colleges, including Emory, competed in a regular-season round-robin schedule followed by an end-of-the-season championship tournament. Emory earned the No. 1 seed in the West Division by virtue of a 5-2 regular season record. The Eagles defeated Lander University in the opening round, Benedict College in overtime in the semifinals and Presbyterian College in the finals to claim the first-ever championship. Other competing schools were Furman University, Middle Georgia College, Georgia Southern University and Georgia Tech. The intent of the SETHC is to identify and groom potential talent for the U.S. Olympic team, which finished ninth among 12 teams at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. One such player emerged from the Emory team-goalie Italo Zanzi.

April 26, 2004 ATLANTA, GA - Coming to Mt. Paran Christian School on May 1, 2004 is the largest youth team handball tournament in the United States, the 10th Annual Cobb Cup. Team Handball, an Olympic Sport, has taken roots in Cobb County after the 1996 Olympic Games and has flourished ever since. USA Team Handball, the National Governing Body for the Olympic sport and event partner the Georgia State Games Commission are excited to host this years competition. http://www.usateamhandball.org/2004CobbCup.html Team handball is practiced in more than 140 nations with more than 20 million players worldwide. With origins tracing back to ancient Greece and Rome, team handball was popularized by German physical education experts and was introduced to the Olympic Program in 1936. Not re-introduced until 1972, team handball has seen unprecedented growth since that time and is extremely popular throughout Europe and North Africa, with professional leagues and television coverage similar to that of our professional baseball, basketball and football leagues. Team handball combines the elements of soccer and basketball. A typical team handball match would consist of six players moving the ball down the floor, which is larger than a basketball court. Players try to score by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper into the net. A successful scoring attempt results in the award of a single point. Typical final scores in this action-packed game run into the mid-20s.

DESCRIPTION
Join the growing number of people who are discovering the fun and excitement of team handball! With more points scored than soccer and more continuous action than basketball, team handball has been a popular international sport for years, and now its popularity is on the rise in the United States. No wonderthis fast-paced team sport lets players take full advantage of their running, jumping, and throwing abilities. Written by two former U.S. Olympic players and expert coaches, Team Handball: Steps to Success presents 12 easy-to-follow steps to becoming an accomplished player. Each step is an easy transition from the one before. The first steps provide a solid foundation of basic skills and concepts. As players progress, they'll learn how to combine these skills to attack the goal, decide when to pass and when to shoot, and support their teammates when attacking and defending. The final steps show how teammates can organize as a unit in attack and on defense and how good communication contributes to the effectiveness of the team. Team Handball: Steps to Success features 62 drills that develop players' shooting, dribbling, passing, and catching skills. The drills come with performance goals and a list of key points to remember in executing them. Plus, many drills include instructions for increasing or decreasing the difficulty of the drill.

TEAM HANDBALL - Olympic Sport A Similar Game Called Harpaston
Based on the basic elements of running, jumping and throwing the same elements of track and field it's not surprising that team handball has number ancient ancestors. Throwing-and-catching games are described by Homer in the "The Odyssey" and depicted in ancient Mexican art, and a game called Harpaston was apparently popular in ancient Rome. Europe, particularly Germany and the Scandinavian countries, was the crucible for the game, as we know it today. By the time the rules became instituted early in the 20th century, team handball would be a composite of several other popular sports, with rules similar to soccer (albeit without the kicking); positional play, scoring strategies and passing patterns resembling water polo; and ball movement and airborne acrobatics right out of basketball. All that with the intensity, speed and physical contact with hockey. An outdoor version of team handball also known as field ball played with 11 players a side made a false start at the Olympics with an appearance at the 1936 Berlin Games, with the Germans pleasing Hitler by winning the gold. It was dropped from the Olympic roster until 1972, by which time the 11-player outdoor game had been replaced by the seven-player indoor sport developed in Scandinavia. A women's Olympic tournament was added in 1976.
